Book excerpt: High quality factor, small mode volume photonic crystal cavities and single emitter quantum dots are the topic of this dissertation. They are studied as both a combined system with InAs quantum dots grown in the center of a 2D GaAs photonic crystal slab nanocavity as well as individually. The individual studies are concerned with passive 1D silicon photonic crystal nanobeam cavities and deterministic, site-selectively grown arrays of InAs quantum dots. For the combined system, strong light matter coupling in a quantum dot photonic crystal slab nanocavity is discussed. Vacuum Rabi splitting is seen when the interaction strength exceeds the dissipative processes of the coupled system. In order to increase the probability of a spectral matching between cavity modes and quantum dot transitions, a technique for condensing an inert gas onto a sample is used. This can lead to a spectral tuning of up to 4 nm of the cavity mode with minimal change in the cavity quality factor while maintaining cryogenic temperatures down to 4 K. The effect of a large density of quantum dots within a quantum dot photonic crystal slab nanocavity is also addressed. Gain and absorption effects are found to occur, changing the cavity emission linewidth from that of its intrinsic value, as well as lasing with a low number of quantum dots and with high spontaneous emission coupling factors. Additionally, methods for improving the quality factor of GaAs photonic crystal cavities and better understanding different loss mechanisms are discussed. In the individual studies, the site-selective growth of InAs quantum dots on pre-structured GaAs wafers is shown as a promising method for the eventual deterministic fabrication of photonic crystal cavities to single quantum dots. An in-situ annealing step is used to reduce quantum dot density, helping ensure that dots are not grown in unwanted locations. Given silicon's potential for achieving higher quality factors than its GaAs counterpart, a study of 1D passive silicon photonic crystal nanobeam cavities is carried out. Transmission through a coupled microfiber is used to measure quality factors of the cavities and compared with that of a crossed polarized resonant scattering measurement.

Book excerpt: An understanding of the interaction between light and matter on a quantum level is of fundamental interest and has many applications in optical technologies. The quantum nature of the interaction has recently attracted great attention for applications of semiconductor nanostructures in quantum information processing. Quantum optics with semiconductor nanostructures is a key guide to the theory, experimental realisation, and future potential of semiconductor nanostructures in the exploration of quantum optics.Part one provides a comprehensive overview of single quantum dot systems, beginning with a look at resonance fluorescence emission. Quantum optics with single quantum dots in photonic crystal and micro cavities are explored in detail, before part two goes on to review nanolasers with quantum dot emitters. Light-matter interaction in semiconductor nanostructures, including photon statistics and photoluminescence, is the focus of part three, whilst part four explores all-solid-state quantum optics, crystal nanobeam cavities and quantum-dot microcavity systems. Finally, part five investigates ultrafast phenomena, including femtosecond quantum optics and coherent optoelectronics with quantum dots. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Quantum optics with semiconductor nanostructures is an essential guide for all those involved with the research, development, manufacture and use of semiconductors nanodevices, lasers and optical components, as well as scientists, researchers and students. - A key guide to the theory, experimental realisation, and future potential of semiconductor nanostructures in the exploration of quantum optics - Chapters provide a comprehensive overview of single quantum dot systems, nanolasers with quantum dot emitters, and light-matter interaction in semiconductor nanostructures - Explores all-solid-state quantum optics, crystal nanobeam cavities and quantum-dot microcavity systems, and investigates ultrafast phenomena

Quantum dots embedded in a micropillar cavity are investigated by measuring the spectra, and by performing time-resolved measurements. The enhancement of the spontaneous decay of the quantum dot is measured to 18.9 with a resonant lifetime of 28.1 ps under the assumption of an exponential decay. A model is constructed with measurable parameters, and the calculated decay curves are not exponential. As a result the mean decay rate, which coincides with the exponential rate for an exponential decay, is calculated for the measured rates. A large deviation is seen, with an enhancement of the mean decay rate of 9.1 with a resonant lifetime of 56.5 ps. The non-exponential decay of the quantum dot is caused by non- Markovian processes in the dot-cavity interaction. Furthermore, the second order coherence is measured to determine the quality of the single-photon emission, and two-photon interference measurements are likewise performed. These measurements show an indistinguishability of 48%. Finally, cavity-assisted resonant excitation of a quantum dot with another quantum dot is demonstrated.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the most recent developments in quantum dot spin physics and the generation of deterministic superior non-classical light states with quantum dots. In particular, it addresses single quantum dot spin manipulation, spin-photon entanglement and the generation of single-photon and entangled photon pair states with nearly ideal properties. The role of semiconductor microcavities, nanophotonic interfaces as well as quantum photonic integrated circuits is emphasized. The latest theoretical and experimental studies of phonon-dressed light matter interaction, single-dot lasing and resonance fluorescence in QD cavity systems are also provided. Book excerpt: A quantum dot is a particle of matter so small that the addition or removal of an electron changes its properties in some useful way. All atoms are quantum dots, but multi-molecular combinations can have this characteristic. In biochemistry, quantum dots are called redox groups. In nanotechnology, they are called quantum bits or qubits. Quantum dots typically have dimensions measured in nanometers, where one nanometer is 10-9 meter or a millionth of a millimetre. The fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, and electronics are all of interest to researchers in nanotechnology. Other applications of quantum dots include nanomachines, neural networks, and high-density memory or storage media. Research is being carried out on nano-crystals, self-assembled dots, and gated structures. This book presents leading-edge research from around the world.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we study the absorption coefficient of quantum dots doped in metallic photonic crystals under different circumferences. The quantum dots are considered as an ensemble of three-level energy systems, containing two excited states and a ground state. We study numerically the temporal evolution of the absorption coefficient profile where a probe field is applied to monitor the absorption process in two cases, when quantum dots are embedded lightly and densely. It is found that the absorption profile shows more oscillations and system goes towards the transparent state. We also studied the effect of a changing plasma frequency on the absorption profile of quantum dots two possible field configurations. In the first configuration, a single probe field couples with the ground state and the two excited states. In this case it is found that the position of the transparent peak is moved, due to a slight change in the plasma energy. This means that the transparent state becomes an absorbing state. In the second configuration, a pump field couples with only one excited state, while the probe field couples to the other. In this case, we found that a peak in the absorption profile appears due to plasmon coupling, and this peak splits into two peaks when the plasma energy is decreased. This change in plasma energy can also take the system from the absorption region to the gain region. We developed an analytical theory for the photonic band structure and density of states of two-dimensional rectangular metallic photonic crystals. We found that the location of the photonic band gap can be controlled by modifying the plasma energy of either metal. We showed that by changing the plasma energy one can control the spontaneous emission in the metallic photonic crystal. Finally, I studied hybrid systems (quantum dot - metallic nanoparticle). In such hybrid systems, it is possible to control spontaneous emission in the semiconductor nanocrystals. Significant applications of this include the development of chemical and biological nanosensors, electrical DNA switches, and nanoscale devices as biosensors. The main advantage of hybrid systems when compared with other nano-optical systems is the possibility for direct energy and quantum information transfer between nanoparticles. In this project, we investigate the control of thermal energy loss in metallic nanoparticles, an effect which could destroy the quality of transformed information if not properly controlled.
