Book excerpt: This report is a detailed summary of three lectures concerning the coherence properties of radiation passing through a random medium such as the atmosphere. These lectures consisted of a review of the basic work in the field and a discussion of transient effects, some new work on propagation developed by the author and discussion of a formal method of analysis that allows one to assess the effects of a random medium on a photographic image. The report gives an approximate solution for the development of the mutual coherence function as it propagates through statistically homogeneous and isotropic random media. Only small-angle scattering about the principal propagation direction z is considered.

Book excerpt: Light and light based technologies have played an important role in transforming our lives via scientific contributions spanned over thousands of years. In this book we present a vast collection of articles on various aspects of light and its applications in the contemporary world at a popular or semi-popular level. These articles are written by the world authorities in their respective fields. This is therefore a rare volume where the world experts have come together to present the developments in this most important field of science in an almost pedagogical manner. This volume covers five aspects related to light. The first presents two articles, one on the history of the nature of light, and the other on the scientific achievements of Ibn-Haitham (Alhazen), who is broadly considered the father of modern optics. These are then followed by an article on ultrafast phenomena and the invisible world. The third part includes papers on specific sources of light, the discoveries of which have revolutionized optical technologies in our lifetime. They discuss the nature and the characteristics of lasers, Solid-state lighting based on the Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, and finally modern electron optics and its relationship to the Muslim golden age in science. The book’s fourth part discusses various applications of optics and light in today's world, including biophotonics, art, optical communication, nanotechnology, the eye as an optical instrument, remote sensing, and optics in medicine. In turn, the last part focuses on quantum optics, a modern field that grew out of the interaction of light and matter. Topics addressed include atom optics, slow, stored and stationary light, optical tests of the foundation of physics, quantum mechanical properties of light fields carrying orbital angular momentum, quantum communication, and Wave-Particle dualism in action.

Book excerpt: The authors expound on non-traditional phenomena for transfer theory, which are nevertheless of considerable interest in wave measurements, and bring the advances of transfer theory as close as possible to the practical needs of those working in all areas of wave physics. The book opens with a historical overview of the topic, then moves on to examine the phenomenological theory of radiative transport, blending traditional theory with original ideas. The transport equation is derived from first principles, and the ensuing discussion of the diffraction content of the transport equation and non-classical radiometry is illustrated by practical examples from various fields of physics. Popular techniques of solving the transport equation are discussed, paying particular attention to wave physics and computing the coherence function. The book also examines various problems which are no longer covered by the traditional radiative transfer theory, such as enhanced backscattering and weak localization phenomena, nonlinear transport problems and kinetic equations for waves. This monograph bridges the gap between the simple power balance description in radiative transfer theory and modern coherence theory. It will be of interest to researchers and professionals working across a wide range of fields from optics, acoustics and radar theory to astrophysics, radioastronomy and remote sensing, as well as to students in these areas.

Each chapter focuses on a particular condition in a very practical manner, describing diagnostic procedures and precisely explaining surgical options with the help of high-quality illustrations. Both established treatment modalities and new management concepts are considered in depth, and controversies relating to the most difficult airway reconstructions are discussed. To help the reader, boxes are included to summarize procedures and to list tips, tricks, and traps relevant to daily practice. The contributors to the book have all been directly involved in the management of children with airway disorders and write on the basis of their vast experience. Otolaryngologists, pediatric surgeons, and thoracic surgeons involved in the management of pediatric airway problems, and in particular airway stenosis, will find this book to be a treasure trove of invaluable information and guidance.
