This book was released on 1965 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a detailed summary of three lectures concerning the coherence properties of radiation passing through a random medium such as the atmosphere. These lectures consisted of a review of the basic work in the field and a discussion of transient effects, some new work on propagation developed by the author and discussion of a formal method of analysis that allows one to assess the effects of a random medium on a photographic image. The report gives an approximate solution for the development of the mutual coherence function as it propagates through statistically homogeneous and isotropic random media. Only small-angle scattering about the principal propagation direction z is considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are reported of investigation in the area of light propagation and spectroscopy from sources of arbitrary states of coherence. The research undertaken has completely clarified the foundations of the radiometric model. It was demonstrated conclusively that spatial coherence properties of a source influence the nature of the spectrum of the emitted radiation. A number of results were derived relating to effects of a random medium on the state of polarization of light transmitted through it. Keywords: Coherence; Spectroscopy; Radiometry; Red shift; Blue shift.

Book excerpt: This volume presents six articles describing theoretical and experimental research of interest in optics. The articles review applications of the Wigner distribution function in optics and optoelectronics, examine the mathematical foundations and the applicability of Kramers-Kronig relations to data inversion in linear and nonlinear optical spectroscopy and explore concentration and anisotropy fluctuations. Chapter four reviews the field of fibre-optical soliton communication systems, and includes discussion of periodic amplification, timing jitter and its control and time-division multiplexing. Chapter five focuses on theoretical aspects of the local field electrodynamics in mesoscopic media. The final chapter reviews experiments and theories concerning the time it takes for a photon or an electromagnetic wave packet to tunnel across a barrier.

Book Synopsis Thermal Radiation by : John R. Howell
Download or read book Thermal Radiation written by John R. Howell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal Radiation: An Introduction is a complete textbook for a one-semester introductory graduate course on radiative energy transfer. It bridges the gap between a basic introduction and comprehensive coverage of thermal radiation, focusing on insight into radiative transfer as practiced by engineers. Covering radiative transfer among surfaces, with an introduction to the effects of participating media between surfaces, the book includes surface and medium property characteristics and solutions to the radiative transfer equation in simple geometries. • Tailored and organized specifically to suit a one-semester graduate course in radiative heat transfer. • Emphasis is placed on insight into radiative transfer as practiced by engineers. • Discusses how radiation is incorporated into finite element analysis (FEA) codes. The textbook is intended for instructors and graduate students in a first-year course on radiative heat transfer or advanced heat transfer. Supplementary resources for students and instructors are available online.
Book Synopsis Radiative Processes in Astrophysics by : George B. Rybicki
Download or read book Radiative Processes in Astrophysics written by George B. Rybicki and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiative Processes in Astrophysics: This clear, straightforward, and fundamental introduction is designed to present-from a physicist's point of view-radiation processes and their applications to astrophysical phenomena and space science. It covers such topics as radiative transfer theory, relativistic covariance and kinematics, bremsstrahlung radiation, synchrotron radiation, Compton scattering, some plasma effects, and radiative transitions in atoms. Discussion begins with first principles, physically motivating and deriving all results rather than merely presenting finished formulae. However, a reasonably good physics background (introductory quantum mechanics, intermediate electromagnetic theory, special relativity, and some statistical mechanics) is required. Much of this prerequisite material is provided by brief reviews, making the book a self-contained reference for workers in the field as well as the ideal text for senior or first-year graduate students of astronomy, astrophysics, and related physics courses. Radiative Processes in Astrophysics also contains about 75 problems, with solutions, illustrating applications of the material and methods for calculating results. This important and integral section emphasizes physical intuition by presenting important results that are used throughout the main text; it is here that most of the practical astrophysical applications become apparent.
