Book Synopsis Spirituality and Desire in Leonard Cohen’s Songs and Poems by : Peter Billingham
Download or read book Spirituality and Desire in Leonard Cohen’s Songs and Poems written by Peter Billingham and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first ever collection of essays on Leonard Cohen to be published in the UK and one of the very first to be produced internationally. The essays range from unique insights offered by Cohen’s award-winning, authorised biographer Sylvie Simmons through to discussions of major themes in Cohen’s output, such as spirituality and desire, and include creative reflections from a filmmaker and poets upon their own creative response to his practice. Emerging from a one day symposium organised by Professor Peter Billingham at the University of Winchester, UK, to celebrate Cohen’s 80th birthday, this Festschrift collection represents a uniquely stimulating, insightful and provocative discussion of the songs and poems of Leonard Cohen, combining academic rigour with serious engagement with this remarkable poet and singer-songwriter. In the wake of the tragic news of Cohen’s passing in late 2016, with a legacy of iconic favourites such as “Suzanne” and “Bird on the Wire” through to more recent worldwide successes such as “Hallelujah” and “Anthem”, this book is a must-read for cultural studies scholars and Cohen aficionados alike.
Book Synopsis Cinéma&Cie. International Film Studies Journal by : Aa. Vv.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The images of atrocity, either analog or digital, are always the trace of an encounter between the gaze of a photographer or a cameraman and a human being sufferingfrom the painful effects of man-made violence. The archive images resulting from such an encounter raise some inevitable questions: who took them and for what purpose? Is it possible to retrace the process that led to these shots? What do they hide behind what the eye can see? This special issue of Cinéma & Cie will not only focus on the production of such images, but also on their persistence on the synchronic level (in the media: newspapers, magazines, cinema, television, the Internet, museums...) as well as on the diachronic level (across time: mutation, re-editing, inversion...). From propaganda to counter-propaganda, from purposes of memory to artistic aims, the circulation of these images proves that repetition always implies difference.

Book Synopsis Birthing Eternity by : Jane Elizabeth Cody
Download or read book Birthing Eternity written by Jane Elizabeth Cody and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we living in what the Bible calls the Last Days? It feels like it, but how can you know for certain? What if everything you have been taught about the End Times is wrong? What if the doctrines of well-meaning theologians who lived in a day before planes, trains, and automobiles, before phones, TVs, and satellite communications, are as helpful as the understanding of an elephant provided by the four proverbial blind men? Based on their limited knowledge, gleaned from what their hands have touched, they proclaim an elephant is like a rope, a snake, a tree, a fan. With the clarity of sight, we know none of these accurately describes an elephant! Birthing Eternity makes a compelling case to take off your theological blindfolds and examine the elephant standing before you. By tracing the correlation between documented history and the biblical prophecy, Birthing Eternity will give you answers that are both unexpected and profound. Find out how God has fulfilled His Word in astounding detail and gain critical insight about current events that are on everyone’s mind in this unsettled and challenging time. Birthing Eternity makes the Last Days easy to understand. It is proof that the message of End Times Scripture does not require top-secret information, prophetic visions, or a degree in theology. It is simply a matter of connecting the dots between what is plainly stated in Scripture and human events. More than that, you will find assurance that the unfolding of Last Days events isn’t something to be feared, but rather an exciting adventure. No matter what, there is hope for a bright future—including eternity.
Download or read book Braceros written by Deborah Cohen and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of World War II, the United States and Mexico launched the bracero program, a series of labor agreements that brought Mexican men to work temporarily in U.S. agricultural fields. In Braceros, Deborah Cohen asks why these migrants provoked so much concern and anxiety in the United States and what the Mexican government expected to gain in participating in the program. Cohen creatively links the often-unconnected themes of exploitation, development, the rise of consumer cultures, and gendered class and race formation to show why those with connections beyond the nation have historically provoked suspicion, anxiety, and retaliatory political policies.
Book Synopsis Hermann Cohen by : Frederick C. Beiser
Download or read book Hermann Cohen written by Frederick C. Beiser and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first complete intellectual biography of Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) and the only work to cover all his major philosophical and Jewish writings. Frederick C. Beiser pays special attention to all phases of Cohen's intellectual development, its breaks and its continuities, throughout seven decades. The guiding goal behind Cohen's intellectual career, he argues, was the development of a radical rationalism, one committed to defending the rights of unending enquiry and unlimited criticism. Cohen's philosophy was therefore an attempt to defend and revive the Enlightenment belief in the authority of reason; his critical idealism an attempt to justify this belief and to establish a purely rational worldview. According to this interpretation, Cohen's thought is resolutely opposed to any form of irrationalism or mysticism because these would impose arbitrary and artificial limits on criticism and enquiry. It is therefore critical of those interpretations which see Cohen's philosophy as a species of proto-existentialism (Rosenzweig) or Jewish mysticism (Adelmann and Kohnke). Hermann Cohen: An Intellectual Biography attempts to unify the two sides of Cohen's thought, his philosophy and his Judaism. Maintaining that Cohen's Judaism was not a limit to his radical rationalism but a consistent development of it, Beiser contends that his religion was one of reason. He concludes that most critical interpretations have failed to appreciate the philosophical depth and sophistication of his Judaism, a religion which committed the believer to the unending search for truth and the striving to achieve the cosmopolitan ideals of reason.
