Book excerpt: This study uses Sweden's current experience with industrial cogeneration to gain insights into the future of industrial cogeneration in the United States. It concentrates on pricing issues, using the effects of Sweden's current form of marginal cost electricity pricing to draw inferences about the likely effects of future marginal cost pricing in the United States. The study finds that the use of true marginal costs in pricing can profoundly affect the type of cogeneration and, more generally, the type of self generation that industry chooses; the way industry uses cogeneration over time; and the form of cooperative arrangements industry enters to exploit cogeneration. The study uses data from the Swedish pulp and paper, iron and steel, chemical, food processing, and other industries to document those effects. It concludes with a set of hypotheses about the implications of these findings for U.S. policy on electricity pricing and industrial cogeneration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the results of an analysis of the technical and economic factors that influence an industrial manufacturing firm's decision to engage in cogeneration. The study considers the influence of industry characteristics, fuel costs, and government regulations. In general, cogeneration is a financially attractive option. Electrical power from a cogenerating plant can be produced relatively cheaply and in most cases can be made more cheaply than (1) the current median U.S. industrial rate (approximately 50 mills/kWh), and (2) that possible from a new central station steam plant (40+ mills/kWh). Furthermore, the real, after-tax rate of return for all but a very few of the cases analyzed exceeded 10 percent. The study shows that cogeneration is most financially attractive for industrial plants with large process steam requirements that operate 24 hours a day year-round. However, for small industrial plants with lower load factors, the financial attractiveness of cogeneration is heavily influenced by the level of credit available through the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and micro combined heat and power (CHP) systems are a form of cogeneration technology suitable for domestic and community buildings, commercial establishments and industrial facilities, as well as local heat networks. One of the benefits of using cogeneration plant is a vastly improved energy efficiency: in some cases achieving up to 80–90% systems efficiency, whereas small-scale electricity production is typically at well below 40% efficiency, using the same amount of fuel. This higher efficiency affords users greater energy security and increased long-term sustainability of energy resources, while lower overall emissions levels also contribute to an improved environmental performance. Small and micro combined heat and power (CHP) systems provides a systematic and comprehensive review of the technological and practical developments of small and micro CHP systems. Part one opens with reviews of small and micro CHP systems and their techno-economic and performance assessment, as well as their integration into distributed energy systems and their increasing utilisation of biomass fuels. Part two focuses on the development of different types of CHP technology, including internal combustion and reciprocating engines, gas turbines and microturbines, Stirling engines, organic Rankine cycle process and fuel cell systems. Heat-activated cooling (i.e. trigeneration) technologies and energy storage systems, of importance to the regional/seasonal viability of this technology round out this section. Finally, part three covers the range of applications of small and micro CHP systems, from residential buildings and district heating, to commercial buildings and industrial applications, as well as reviewing the market deployment of this important technology. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Small and micro combined heat and power (CHP) systems is an essential reference work for anyone involved or interested in the design, development, installation and optimisation of small and micro CHP systems. Reviews small- and micro-CHP systems and their techno-economic and performance assessment Explores integration into distributed energy systems and their increasing utilisation of biomass fuels Focuses on the development of different types of CHP technology, including internal combustion and reciprocating engines

Book excerpt: This is a report on the role that cogeneration can play in our Nation's efforts to conserve valuable energy resources. The cogeneration of power and heat can be employed by both industry and utilities. Since these two sectors account for about half of the fuel consumed in the United States, their acceptance of this technology can assist in accomplishing the national goals of using fuels more efficiently and decreasing the use of imported fuels. This study was undertaken because of indications that the private sector faces many constraints which limit the acceptance of cogeneration technology. Moreover, the Federal Government is one of the influential forces which can encourage greater acceptance of cogeneration. This report sets forth the characteristics of cogeneration, the factors involved in its application, and the policy option and strategy which we believe should be considered by Federal and State agencies to encourage greater cogeneration development. The report recognizes that cogeneration is very complex and interrelated with other issues such as economics, fuel availability, and environmental considerations. This report will be useful to the Congress, the executive branch, State agencies, and private industries and utilities in working together to overcome the constraints that cogeneration faces. We are also aware that several Congressmen have expressed interest in the subject, and there is an indication that some are interested in moving forward with legislation in this area. (Author).
