Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coffee Its History, Cultivation, and Uses Having from his earliest business associations been personally connected with the Coffee-trade, the writer has always been greatly interested in collecting anything relating to the history, cultiva tion, or uses Of this great staple. Long impressed with the idea that the mass of statistical figures that accumulate from day to day, in the many circulars and market reports received by those engaged in the importation and sale of coffee, tend rather to con fuse and detract from the importance Of this constantly increasing branch Of commerce, the following pages are intended to give such general information as may perhaps interest not only those who are familiar with the business, but also that multitudinous class to whom coffee now has become an indispensable beverage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coffee: Its Cultivation and Profit Up, many deserving that the attention of those interested in this branch of commerce should be drawn to them as supplying fresh fields for enterprise and capital, and changing by their prosperity the face of regions which, though once clothed in dense Jungle, are now patched with the luxuriant green gardens characteristioof the industry, and dotted with the white bungalows of European superintendents. To gaze over a tract thus changing hands - from Nature's to men's - is an experience not easily forgotten; the fair and fruitful plantations already won from primeval barbarism lying along the hollows of, it may be, a wild upland valley, surrounded on every side by the swelling masses of forest only awaiting their turn to come under the woodman's axe; a mountain stream winding down the glen, a thread of silver in the dry weather, and a turgid torrent in the monsoon, sup plying water for the wants of man and beast, besides motive power for pulping, saw-driving, and all the other hundred wants of a plantation; the long ghaut road trailing away into the distance, with its slow-moving trains of bullock carts or labourers, the populous native. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coffee in America: Methods of Production and Facilities for Successful Cultivation in Mexico, the Central American States, Brazil and Other South American Countries, and the West Indies Throughout the world there is a constant and rapid increase in the consumption of coffee. Although there has been a marked increase in the production of this berry in Central and South American countries, the rising prices indicate that the supply is still below the demand. These facts have naturally turned attention to this industry in those regions where the coffee plant thrives, and has prompted many inquiries from persons seeking investment regarding favorable locations, prices of lands and general information upon the subject. To answer fully the many inquiries received at this Bureau on this subject, is the object of this bulletin. Incidentally, the coffee production of the Old World is noted, but attention is chiefly directed to the lands, climates, soils and other natural conditions of growth of plant, methods of propagation, cultivation, handling and marketing of this product in the countries on this Continent, to which it seems probable the world must look for any increase in the present supply. The coffee plant, indigenous to Asia and Africa, has found its true habitat in the New World, where its production is already many times greater than in the Eastern Continent. Messrs. Schoffer & Co., of Rotterdam, estimated the world's total production in 1884 at 681,314 tons, of which Brazil alone produced 371,429 tons, or 61,544 tons more than one-half the entire product. Java, Sumatra and Celebes produced 108,743 tons. Since that time the proportion in favor of America has constantly and immensely increased; the Old World having hardly increased its production, while in Brazil the crop in 1892 reached about 500,000 tons, and the other American countries had shown, in certain cases, a still greater percentage of growth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coffee Planting in Southern India and Ceylon: Being a Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged, of "Coffee, Its Physiology, History, and Cultivation" For the benefit of those who may ask, how one not now engaged in coffee planting can claim to be heard on the subject, I may explain, that I have never ceased to follow with interest the movements of an enterprise to which ten of the most impression able years of my life were exclusively devoted, and with which I was directly connected for a much longer period; and there is perhaps no harm in adding, that for some years it was a necessity with me, as a regular contributor on this and kindred subjects to the Indian' press, to keep myself cm comment of all that occurred in'connexion with them, as time went on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coffee: From Plantation to Cup; A Brief History of Coffee Production and Consumption I have endeavored to tell the story of coffee in a practical way, so as to make the information valuable alike to consumers and dealers. I have been induced to add to the innumerable com pany Of books from the fact that there seemed to be a want for a work which, besides furnishing statistical and historical matter relative to the coffee-plant, should give the reader a thorough knowledge of the characteristics of the world's coffee supply, and the mode of preserving and preparing the coffee-bean so as to best secure all those qualities which make coffee the favorite beverage with most Of the civilized nations of the earth. My reliance has been chiefly upon twenty years' experience as a dealer, and such in formation as was to be gathered from a trip around the world. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to many books for facts re garding coffee culture, and historical matter relating thereto, and also to a large circle of business acquaintances for valuable statis tical information. To mention them specifically is hardly pos sible, and would be of little interest to the general reader. It is, however, but just that I should here recognize the many courtesies.
