This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first of its kind, the Seafood Regulatory Compliance Manual is a comprehensive work that comprises the myriad of governmental requirements and guidelines applicable to all aspects of seafood from harvest to the marketplace. The intent of the authors was to develop for users a manual that is easy to use, with a structured format to ensure compliance with governmental requirements. They have been highly successful in achieving this objective and presenting a user friendly tool. The manual represents a major advancement by providing a single source reference to all requirements, except for some specific end product and labeling requirements, for a highly complex global industry. In addition, it is an outstanding contribution to the seafood industry in addressing a long-standing need for systems changes in the form of a single source manual, in contrast to the obsolete approach of having to access a library of multiple regulations and the affiliated agencies' bureaucracies to determine how and/or whether compliance with a particular regulation has been achieved. For those engaged in international commerce in seafood, the manual should be especially useful. Well integrated throughout the manual are the applicable provisions of the recommended international Codex standards for fish and shellfish products and the codes of hygienic and technological practice for handling and processing these products. These standards and codes were developed through an international harmonization process, and are familiar to seafood-producing countries worldwide.

Book excerpt: Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, or IUU fishing, is considered one of the most significant threats to the sustainability of fisheries resources. Since the adoption of the International Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IPOA-IUU), States and regional fisheries management organisations have made sustained efforts to address the problem. This book analyses the concept of IUU fishing and the international instruments which provide the legal and policy framework to combat IUU fishing. The book also examines the range of measures adopted by States and regional organisations to address IUU fishing. These measures include flag State, coastal State, port State, and market State measures.

Book Synopsis Policy recommendations and smallholder guidelines in improved fish smoking systems by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Policy recommendations and smallholder guidelines in improved fish smoking systems written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smoked fish is an important animal protein source in Ghana. However, the traditional method by which the commodity is produced leads to high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH, a food safety hazard) in the commodity. This predisposes consumers to potential health challenges linked to PAH exposure in food. The extent to which that is the case in Ghana was evaluated by screening smoked fish on informal markets in the country for the hazard. Since the FAO-Thiaroye fish processing technique (FTT) has been demonstrated to address the PAH problem, it was further evaluated against traditional kilns in that respect. Consumer acceptance of smoked products from the FTT versus the traditional kilns was also evaluated. The findings demonstrated the high PAH levels associated with traditional kilns, and the efficacy of the FTT in that regard. Consequently, a risk assessment showed that should FTT be used instead of traditional kilns to smoke fish in the Ghana, consumers will be protected from PAH public health risks related to smoked fish consumption. It was also found that overall, consumers are likely to accept products from the new kiln since they did not show a significant preference for traditional kiln products.

Download or read book Modified Atmospheric Processing and Packaging of Fish written by W. Steven Otwell and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent introduction of carbon monoxide and filtered smokes in processing of fish and the continuing controversy for utilization of reduced oxygen packaging are arguably the highest profiled concerns influencing today’s commerce and regulation of fresh and frozen fish about the world. The growing dependence on more distant and time-consuming exchange of fishery products requires processing and packaging options that help preserve product quality and product shelf life. Continuing reliance on modified atmospheric processing and package is inevitable, but this technology involves concerns for operational issues, regulatory guidelines, and market expectations. In Modified Atmospheric Processing and Packaging of Fish: Filtered Smokes, Carbon Monoxide, and Reduced Oxygen Packaging, experts from industry, academia, and agencies discuss the technology, commercial practices, and pertinent regulations of these fish processing applications, providing the most current and complete information on the topics available anywhere. Coverage of major seafood technology applications includes discussion of practices that are new, controversial, and rapidly expanding in production and markets throughout the world. Methods of application, shelf life, color enhancement, technical aspects, product quality, regulatory issues, microbial consequences, food safety concerns, and product assessments are fully addressed. Modified Atmospheric Processing and Packaging of Fish is the benchmark resource for the practice, science, and regulation of the most popular processing and packaging methods for fresh and frozen seafood worldwide.
