Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HISTORY OF THE COCONUT Olodumare saw in Obi (coconut), a just and humble person, therefore he placed him high in a coconut tree, and made him white inside, and out. He also gave him an immortal soul. Elegba who was always a true and trusted servant of Olodumare is also at the service of Obi. That is why Elegba knows all the friends of Obi, and Obi knows all the friends for Elegba, the poor, the rich, the clean, the dirty, the straight and the crooked. One day, Obi had feast for his birthday, and entrusted Elegba to invite all his friends. Elegba seeing how pretentious and arrogant Obi had become invited all the beggars, and dirty people of the town. When Obi arrived and saw in his house all the beggars and dirty people in his house, he became very angry, and asked the beggars who had invited them there. They replied Elegba who had invited them. At that Obi shouted, Ah, so it was Elegba who invited you was it, but dirty, and with those rags for clothes! Get out of here! He shouted, and with that all the embarrassed guest left, and with them went Elegba, Obi soon realized his error, and called Elegba, but Elegba did not listen, and kept walking. One day Olodumare asked Elegba to go to the house of Obi. However, Elegba refused and told him to send him anywhere else, and we would go right away beside the house of Obi he would not, and should not go. Olodumare pretending that he knew nothing of what had transpired, asked Elegba what he had against Obi. After hearing Elegba the details of the incident at Obis house, Olodumare transformed himself into the disguise of a beggar, and went calling at the door of Obi. When Obi saw that who was calling was a beggar, he indignantly said, Take a bath and get dressed before calling at my door, can you not see that you are dirty, do you want to dirty my furniture too? and with that, he slammed the door in the face of Olodumare. Olodumare took a few steps from Obis house, and then with a strong voice called Obi; Obi Meye Emi Ofe which means, Obi see who I am. When Obi was seen aware that it was Olodumare who had come calling at his door, he tried to excuse himself, and beg forgiveness but Oloduma said to him Obi it is too late, I thought you were natural and unpretentious, that is why I placed you high in the coconut tree, making you white inside and out. But having placed so high, you have to become vain, and have thrown the beggar from your house. Obi, those are my children too. I am going to leave you in the coconut tree, so that you may realize that no matter how high you are placed, you can never be higher than myself, Oloduma the creator God, or my divine laws. Therefore for as long as the earth exists, you will roll on the ground, and be transformed to green and black on the outside, but to remain white on the inside for your immortal soul. The black to remind you of the offense you made to the beggars and the green for the hope that someday you will be forgiven when you come to understand that all persons are my children. Meanwhile, you will predict the good and bad, and the death that will occur on earth. And with that began the tradition of reading the Obi at the feet of Elegba, and the other Orishas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the history, beliefs, rituals, and culture of a religious tradition that, despite persecution, suppression, and its own secretive nature, has close to a million adherents in the United States alone. Santería is a religion with Afro-Cuban roots, rising out of the cultural clash between the Yoruba people of West Africa and the Spanish Catholics who brought them to the Americas as slaves. With the exile of thousands of Cubans after Castro's revolution in 1959, Santería came to the United States, where it is gradually coming to be recognized as a legitimate faith tradition, one about which most people in America's mainstream know very little. De La Torre explains the worldview, myths, rituals, and history of Santería, and discusses what role the religion typically plays in the life of its practitioners as well as the cultural influence it continues to exert in Latin American communities today.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: Embarking on an ethnographic journey to the inner barrios of Havana among practitioners of Ifá, a prestigious Afro-Cuban tradition of divination, Truth in Motion reevaluates Western ideas about truth in light of the practices and ideas of a wildly different, and highly respected, model. Acutely focusing on Ifá, Martin Holbraad takes the reader inside consultations, initiations, and lively public debates to show how Ifá practitioners see truth as something to be not so much represented, as transformed. Bringing his findings to bear on the discipline of anthropology itself, he recasts the very idea of truth as a matter not only of epistemological divergence but also of ontological difference—the question of truth, he argues, is not simply about how things may appear differently to people, but also about the different ways of imagining what those things are. By delving so deeply into Ifá practices, Truth in Motion offers cogent new ways of thinking about otherness and how anthropology can navigate it.

Book excerpt: When the Yoruba of West Africa were brought to Cuba as slaves, they preserved their religious heritage by disguising their gods as Catholic saints and worshiping them in secret. The resulting religion is Santería, a blend of primitive magic and Catholicism now practiced by an estimated five million Hispanic Americans. Blending informed study with her personal experience, González-Wippler describes Santería¿s pantheon of gods ("orishas "); the priests ("santeros" ); the divining shells used to consult the gods (the "Diloggún" ) and the herbal potions prepared as medicinal cures and for magic ("Ewe ) "as well as controversial ceremonies-including animal sacrifice. She has obtained remarkable photographs and interviews with Santería leaders that highlight aspects of the religion rarely revealed to nonbelievers. This book satisfies the need for knowledge of this expanding religious force that links its devotees in America to a spiritual wisdom seemingly lost in modern society.

Igbo is the short form of IGBODOANYA, IGBOSHIKWO, IGBOCHIDONKECHINYEREGỊ, AND IGBOKWABA. These four-letter words, IGBO, were/are still the channel whereby humankind replicated/s the Lord God's creation from generation to generation after He created Adam, the first human. The words IGBODOANYA/to persevere, IGBOSHIKWO/to prevent, IGBOCHIDONKECHINYEREGỊ/to protect what god gave you, and IGBOKWABA/to preserve are the primary builders as well as facilitators of the gametes""sex cells when fertilization happens in the fallopian tubes during the formation of humankind. The word Igbo is the representation of an indelible precepts of God's constitution as it relates to the creation of humankind. The four-letter words, Igbo, is the seal, legacy, and continuity of the actions of the spoken words that originated from Chinekengịrị (Chinekengịrị means the God that creates DNA) or in the popular short form, Chineke. Chukwu (Chukwu means Chiukwu), The great God. Chukwu is the short version of Chiukwu. Chiukwu or Chukwu Okike Abraham. Ndị Igbo/the Igbo people always call upon Chukwu Okike Abịama (Abịama means Abraham). Abraham is Abaraham in Igbo. (Abaraham means named after me). Chineke, Chukwu Okike Abịama means the Almighty God and Creator of Abraham and/or God, the Creator. Ndị Igbo/the Igbo people bụ Ndị Hebrew (the Igbos are the Hebrew). Ndị Igbo/the Igbo people are Ụmụ Chineke/Ụmụ Chukwu Okike Abịama/Ụmụ God, and/or Ụmụ Yahweh. The Igbo people are the special skilled builders of Ụmụ Chineke or Ụmụ Chukwu Okike Abịama, the Lord Almighty God. Adam was the only human the Lord God created on earth. It seemed most likely that the archangels, angels, as well as Ndị Igbo were in existence when AtỠna ime otu dị ngỠzị, Chineke nna Onye Okike, Chukwu nwa Onye NzỠpụta na Chukwu MmỠNsỠkere mmadụ mbụ (the Holy Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost, the Lord God Almighty created the first human). The Lord God assigned to Ndị Igbo/Igbo people who were one of those that were around Him to always continue to perform His divine special tasks of creation for the benefit of humankind. The Lord God bụ Agbara Ukwu. The Lord God kajara akaja. The Lord God jiri aka ya dịrị onwe ya. The Lord God enweghị ishi mbido. The Lord God enweghị ishi ngwụria. The Lord God bụ onye kere ụwa na ihe nile dị na elu ụwa. The archeologists, creationists, atheists, evolutionists, etc. believe that humankind originated from a single couple parent source. Therefore, there should be no such concept as the black race, white race, and/or human slavery. The purpose of the documentation is not to blame the colonial team who coined out "the N-word" slave country named Nigeria, or praise the victims from the southern protectorates who had been dehumanized since 1914. The purpose of the documentation is to bring to the attention of the oppressors and encourage them to stop annihilating Ndị Igbo/the Igbo people indirectly. The oppressors need to develop the sense of oneness with the oppressed, according to Chineke, Chukwu Okike Abịama's plan when he created Adam. The Lord Almighty God did not create Nigeria. The British""educated female journalist and the colonial team coined out "the N-word" slave country named Nigeria in February 1914. The indigenous people were not invited to participate in naming their country. The colonial team unilaterally had already carved out the African continent among themselves in Berlin at the conference that commenced in November 1884 and ended on the 26th of February 1885. The colonial team deliberately destroyed the empires and kingdoms that flourished in the giant African continent. This documentation shall help oppressors eradicate the idea of black race/white race and slavery. This documentation shall help oppressors step aside and allow the indigenous people all over the African continent to revive/restore their empires and kingdoms. The oppressors should cease and desist from supporting and supplying weapons to the nonindigenous herdsmen who exterminate the indigenous citizens of Nigeria. The colonial team crushed the indigenes of the southern protectorate in 1914 and enslaved them to date. The oppressed need to break the shackle of slavery and revive/restore their suppressed empires and kingdoms. Ndị Igbo/the Igbo people bụ Ndị Hebrew (the Igbos are the Hebrew) are not Slaves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join us on a poetic journey to the soul of India. The Poetry of T.V. Reddy is grounded in human struggles and unrest, social as well as psychological and depicts the varied shades of restlessness that is the order of modern times. He protests against the social ills and evils in a gripping way in his absorbing poetry. He paints his experiences in a characteristic choice diction and the different images that he has carved out of human life and nature make a deep impression on the minds of the readers and linger there. The poet takes the readers into the soul of India, the villages and rural life which are the backbone of the countryóthat speaks volumes of his commitment to rural element and makes people come alive in his poetry. Natural rhyme and rhythm of the poems creates the pleasing melody. Clarity of thought and lucidity of expression, splendid imagery and marvelous melody are the hallmarks of his poetry. -- Dr. P.V. Laxmiprasad, Editor T.V. Reddy is not only a poet of highly perceptive temperament but also an accomplished critic and novelist. His awesome ingenious insight into the purpose and meaning of life in a perceptive and intuitive way leads the reader to the invisible force meticulously driving the point that the spiritual region lying within a man offers solace, harmony and consolation par excellence. For Reddy often finds strong affinity in Indian soil and here, rural backdrop inspires him to cultivate niceties of life where rural-oriented background turns out religious for him. -- P.C.K. Prem, Authoritative critic on Indian English Poetry from Himachal Paradesh, India T.V. Reddy's poems have the earthly smear of sweat and blood. Images crystallized, come alive in subtle but strong words gaining a permanent place in the hearts of the readers. His pen moves carving lasting images in a simple and straight form without any pompous gimmicks in the name of modern craft. His art of highlighting even tiny specks into gigantic monuments and the quality of lyrical writing gives a sense of exhilaration bringing the varied themes alive before our eyes elevating the soul to a higher consciousness. T.V. Reddy is a poet in the true sense, who gives us the best of the poetry in Indian English. -- D.H. Kabadi, from his review of Melting Melodies in Poetcrit T.V. Reddy is a skilled poet who handles thoughts that compel recognition. He deals with wide ranging themes that are sensitively sketched. While many poems capture common human tendencies and susceptibilities, vanities and vagaries with a sharp realist eye, there are some that move on to the dramatization of a grander perspective of eternity intruding into time to seek to redeem it of its ravages. -- Prof. C.R.Visveswar Rao, Former Vice Chancellor, Vikrama Simhapuri University, Nellore, A.P., India; and currently the Chairman, Indian Society for Commonwealth Studies (ISCS) , New Delhi From Modern History Press www.ModernHistoryPress.com

In colorful, exotic settings reminiscent of The Arabian Nights, brave heroes and virtuous heroines triumph over the forces of evil, often with fantastical or comic results. These folktales, collected orally in the desert state of Rajasthan in 1986-87, are eloquent reflections of the great cultural traditions of India, and are stories that bring enchantment to audiences everywhere.
