Through the pages, we meet many familiar characters, the way they talk, think and act. As someone commented, “Many of us think of writing these stories from life but never get around to doing it.” Do you like reading an amusing letter from a friend? Then Coconut Country Musings will compel you to read the stories more than once. The writer sits next to you and entertains with his dramatic descriptions. He will engage you in a conversation that will take you through nature, make you feel and smell its salubrious ambience. And there are memories of a familiar childhood and episodes of youthful adventures. You may face surprises, accidental meetings and a few sagacious axioms that would pep you up. If the reader lived in the last three decades of the last century in India, then you can relate with the writer. If you are a millennial kid, you meet an uncle who lived in that sliver of land in the south of India, Kerala – the Coconut Country.

Book excerpt: ÿInside one of Contemporary India's most Influential Poets The twenty-four papers inÿPhilosophical Musings for a Meaningful Lifeÿstudy the poetry collectionsWinged Reasonÿ(2010),ÿWrite Son, Writeÿ(2011), andÿMulticultural Symphonyÿ(2014), of Dr. K.V. Dominic and reveal his humanistic values and concept of universal brotherhood, his social criticism devoid of absurdity and obscurity, his profound concern for the marginalized sections of society, and his reverence for Nature. All the papers focus on the poet's anguish at the evils and the inhuman attitude prevalent in the society and necessitate harmony of existence. In the context of Indian English poetry, the papers find Dominic to be unique in his use of simple and plain language to address the vast canvass of human life and the neglected segment of human society. Further, the papers bring out how the universal appeal of Dominic lies in his ability to view the world as a sanctuary and acknowledge him as the promising voice of the present century for his belief in the interrelatedness of all lives that ascertains positive change in the individuals. Dr. S. Kumaran, Editor, is working as an Assistant Professor in the Postgraduate & Research Department of English, Thiruvalluvar Government Arts College, Rasipuram. He is Associate Editor of two refereed international biannual journals,ÿWriters Editors Criticsÿ(WEC) andÿInternational Journal on Multicultural Literatureÿ(IJML); and a Member of the Editorial Boards of various journals from India and abroad. "This critical study on the poetry of Dr. K.V. Dominic deserves to be read closely for evaluation and to be on the shelf of every notable library.ÿPhilosophical Musings for a Meaningful Lifeÿwill inspire scholars from the West to find rubies and diamonds in the Indian poetry of today." --Dr. Stephen Gill, Poet Laureate of Ansted University "K.V. Dominic's social consciousness is his chief forte. Not for a moment does he divert attention from the simple and innocent activities of ordinary human beings. From his lyrics originate feelings of eternal sympathy, peace, and fraternal unity." --P.C.K. Now in his thirties, he jumps at the opportunity to take a six-month sabbatical offered by his company. But as he walks to the airport gate, Ray feels a bit of trepidation; he'll be giving up his normal life--friends, family, sports, hobbies, and his usual daily life-- while he backpacks for the coming half-year. From Thailand to Cambodia and Vietnam, Ray explores cultures, sees breathtaking sights, and savours the cuisine of his many stops. He makes new friends and takes time to examine his life as a single man. It's a discovery of places and parts that Ray has forgotten existed while he toiled away in the corporate rat race. Although he begins his trip without any ambition of finding himself or the like; he is increasingly intrigued by the question of what he wants from the rest of his life. Will he find love and a lifestyle that makes him happy?

Book excerpt: Some of you may have stumbled across Jack Mazur's blog, "Jack and his palm trees," coming to you from his bunker in Key West. Here he muses about life (and death) on this zany island sometimes called Key Weird. His stories often involve Joe Beans, a beer-swizzling bro who takes each day as it come. For your pleasure, we have collected the best of these tales into this volume, beginning with a soliloquy about the demise of local rooster known as Henry. From there, his ruminations range from murder, mayhem, and marijuana to fishing on bridges, canals, beaches, and sometimes on a boat. Oh yes -- and one about Willard, Henry's feathered grandson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There's Money in Thirst,” reads a headline in the New York Times. The CEO of Nestlé, purveyor of bottled water, heartily agrees. It is important to give water a market value, he says in a promotional video, so “we're all aware that it has a price.” But for those who have no access to clean water, a fifth of the world's population, the price is thirst. This is the frightening landscape that Karen Piper conducts us through in The Price of Thirst—one where thirst is political, drought is a business opportunity, and more and more of our most necessary natural resource is controlled by multinational corporations. In visits to the hot spots of water scarcity and the hotshots in water finance, Piper shows us what happens when global businesses with mafia-like powers buy up the water supply and turn off the taps of people who cannot pay: border disputes between Iraq and Turkey, a “revolution of the thirsty” in Egypt, street fights in Greece, an apartheid of water rights in South Africa. The Price of Thirst takes us to Chile, the first nation to privatize 100 percent of its water supplies, creating a crushing monopoly instead of a thriving free market in water; to New Delhi, where the sacred waters of the Ganges are being diverted to a private water treatment plant, fomenting unrest; and to Iraq, where the U.S.-mandated privatization of water resources destroyed by our military is further destabilizing the volatile region. And in our own backyard, where these same corporations are quietly buying up water supplies, Piper reveals how “water banking” is drying up California farms in favor of urban sprawl and private towns. The product of seven years of investigation across six continents and a dozen countries, and scores of interviews with CEOs, activists, environmentalists, and climate change specialists, The Price of Thirst paints a harrowing picture of a world out of balance, with the distance between the haves and have-nots of water inexorably widening and the coming crisis moving ever closer.

Book excerpt: A young school teacher is posted to a remote Aboriginal community, and through his experiences, his encounter with the local people, his discovery of the history of the community, his own history and his Aboriginality are revealed. Like many others in the novel, Billy is struggling to find a meaningful cultural identity and to create a better future from the wreckage of the recent history of Aboriginal people. What he finds at Karnama is a disintegrating community, characterised by government handouts, alcoholism, wife-beating, petrol-sniffing and an indifference to traditional beliefs and practices. It is a depressingly familiar litany of social problems which confirms the smug racial stereotypes of the white community to which Billy initially belongs. True Country offers no clear-cut solution to the realities of powerlessness. What it leaves us with is Billy's vision of the 'true country' which he shares with the unnamed Aboriginal narrator in the final pages of the novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel consists of three separate stories from widely different periods of time. The first is set in ancient India, in the fictional kingdom of Thaneshwar whose nobility is engaged in advancing altruistic living for its citizens but faces an existential threat from a sinister adversary, whose defeat is the protagonist’s main task. The second takes place in the near contemporary India of the 1970s where a young woman civil servant appears in a district for her training and is immediately immersed in its difficult problems and dangerous and volatile environment. The backdrop of the last is the future India of the 2050s where a Japanese woman undertakes a journey to India across the Himalayas in pursuit of both a public mission for peace in Asia as well as a secret personal quest. The three stories deal with the similarity of choices faced by humanity in every epoch and age that requires resolution according to its best principled judgments and prevailing values and philosophies. The stories also discuss the continuing quest of individuals over the ages to overcome their fragile existence by immersing themselves in strengthening the future of humankind.
