Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of Mediterranean imaginaries in one of the preeminent tropes of Italian history: the formation or 'making of' Italians. While previous scholarship on the construction of Italian identity has often focused too narrowly on the territorial notion of the nation-state, and over-identified Italy with its capital, Rome, this book highlights the importance of the Mediterranean Sea to the development of Italian collective imaginaries. From this perspective, this book re-interprets key historical processes and actors in the history of modern Italy, and thereby challenges mainstream interpretations of Italian collective identity as weak or incomplete. Ultimately, it argues that Mediterranean imaginaries acted as counterweights to the solidification of a 'national' Italian identity, and still constitute alternative but equally viable modes of collective belonging.

Book excerpt: This work takes a fresh, modern approach to investigate and explain the predator and prey relationships of insects and spiders, the major terrestrial fauna on earth. Devoted to broad and in-depth analysis of arthropod defenses against predators, the book's approach is both experimentally and theoretically based with major emphasis on evolution, predator strategies and tactics, and prey defensive adaptations and behaviors. The authors explain such topics as cryptic and aposematic coloration, the conflict between sexual and survival needs, web spider prey choice and evolution of prey counter defenses, predator-prey interactions and the origins of intelligence, bird predatory tactics, and caterpillar defense strategies. Also examined is the use of timing for fitness and survival, evolutionary gamesmanship in the predatory bat-moth relationship, colony defense by aper wasps, startle as a defense by moths, aggregation as a defense, chemicals as defenses, plant chemicals as defenses, and venoms as defenses. The authors illustrate each topic with numerous specific well-documented examples presented in a clear, readable style.

He withdrew if she so much as lightly brushed his shoulder. Still, nothing prepared Margherita Gale Harris for the day when Mark -- a physician and Episcopal priest -- confessed to having sexual encounters with hundreds of strangers. They both sought counseling, to no avail. Faced with his shocking betrayal, Gale wondered if their entire marriage was a lie. Could she forgive Mark for lying? Could she forgive herself for staying so long? More secrets were revealed. Divorce ended thirty-five years of marriage. Her lawyer said, see your bishop. The road to recovery was treacherous and filled with surprises. Support came from numerous individuals: new friends and former classmates . . . and the daughter she’d placed for adoption many years ago.
