Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the search for alternative redox mediators, a critical component of the electrolyte used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The redox couple plays the important role of facilitating dye regeneration, which occurs following the light-induced electron injection from the dye into the semiconductor. The maximum photovoltage (VOC) achievable with DSCs strongly depends on the redox potential of the mediator used in these devices. The redox potential of the classical iodide/triiodide redox couple typically sits 600-700 mV above that of the dye (E(D/D+)). As a consequence, a sizable amount of energy is dissipated during the dye-regeneration process, restricting the maximum achievable VOC. Currently major efforts are being made to use alternative redox mediators in place of iodide/triiodide.Very recently, cobalt(II)/(III)-based redox mediators have been used to fabricate DSCs with record efficiency. These DSCs were made using [Co(bpy)3]2+/3+ as a redox mediator. The 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) used in this case is a bidentate ligand that coordinates to the metal centre via two nitrogen donor atoms. Modification in the architecture of these ligands offers an opportunity to tune the redox potential of their respective cobalt complexes. Many derivatives of bpy and the tridentate ligand, 2,2',6',2"-terpyridine (terpy), have been used to synthesize redox couples for DSCs. However, the use of redox couples based on the complexes of higher denticity ligands was virtually unexplored prior to this research. In this thesis, pentadentate (L = PY5Me2) and hexadentate (L' = bpyPY4) polypyridyl ligands have been used to prepare novel cobalt complexes for application as redox couples in DSCs. Based on the chelate effect, the new complexes were expected to be thermodynamically more stable than analogues prepared from lower denticity ligands, such as bpy and terpy. In case of the pentadentate ligand complexes with the general formula [Co(L)(X)]2+/3+, where L = pentadentate ligand and X = weakly binding ligand, two complexes were isolated in which the cobalt center resides in a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. For these complexes, there is an opportunity to fine-tune the potential of the redox couple by simply replacing the monodentate ligand X with another Lewis base with a stronger binding affinity for cobalt(II)/(III). The Lewis bases chosen for this study are common DSC electrolyte additives, which are generally believed to act as surface passivating agents. Using a number of analytical techniques, it was shown that t-butylpyridine (tBP) and N-methylbenzimidazole (NMBI) can easily replace the monodentate acetonitrile ligand (X) to form a redox couple with the general formula [Co(L)(B)]2+/3+. By applying an organic sensitizer, efficiencies of 8.4% and 9.4% were attained under simulated light intensity of 100% sun (1,000 W m-2 AM 1.5) and 10% sun, respectively, with an open circuit voltage (VOC) of 1V at 100% sun for the tBP based mediator. To further develop a thermodynamically stable redox mediator capable of extending the long term stability of the DSCs, a hexadentate polypyridyl ligand (L') was used to prepare novel cobalt(II)/(III) complexes, which were characterized using techniques such as single crystal X-ray crystallography. These [Co(L')]2+/3+ complexes were then applied as redox mediators in DSCs in combination with an organic sensitizer, MK2. The newly synthesized redox couple, [Co(L')]2+/3+, results in higher DSC efficiencies than the [Co(bpy)3]2+/3+ couple. Most importantly, the lab scale DSCs made with this redox mediator exhibit superior stability under continuous full sun illumination compared to those based on [Co(bpy)3]2+/3+, highlighting the importance of the thermodynamic stability of the complex for future applications in commercial DSCs. The oxidation of the cobalt(II) complex to the corresponding cobalt(III) complex is an important part of the synthesis of the redox couple. Efforts to oxidize [Co(L)(X)]2+/3+ by NOBF4 resulted in an unwanted reaction product, which was further investigated. Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed the formation of [Co(L)(F)]2+, which resulted from the decomposition of BF4 over time. The synthesis and structural elucidation of [Co(L)(F)3+ is provided, as it could find potential application as redox couple or as a catalyst. A preferable method for the oxidation of cobalt(II) polypyridyl complexes is also suggested. In conclusion, new non-corrosive redox mediators based on cobalt(II)/(III) complexes comprising multidentate polypyridyl ligands were developed in this thesis. The ability to adjust the redox properties of these mediators provides the scope to fine-tune the mediator properties to those of specific sensitizers. This in turn should allow the minimization of dye-regeneration driving forces, which would consequently improve the energy conversion efficiencies.

However, the performance of Co-bpy in DSSCs has so far not equaled that of more traditional mediators based on the iodide/triiodide redox couple. This book primarily focuses on research conducted to investigate the reason for the poorer performance of Co-bpy mediators, although significant attention is also given to efforts to develop a solid-state Co-bpy DSSC. A series of two-electrode experiments was devised and an apparatus built to perform three-electrode experiments, a task made more complex by the thin layer, "sandwich cell" geometry of the DSSC. The results of this work suggested that mass transfer of the Co-bpy is often rate-limiting and significantly slower than that of iodide-based mediators. A mostly theoretical treatment of mass transfer predicted that diffusion within the mesoporous titania layer, rather than an intrinsically slow bulk diffusion rate, is hampering DSSC performance. This work should be of interest to researchers investigating DSSCs or diffusion within nanostructures.

Book excerpt: With the depletion of the earth's oil reserves, the likely doubling of the world's energy consumption over the next three decades and the startling climatic consequences caused by fossil fuel combustion, the development of new technologies that employ various sources of renewable energy is an urgent necessity. Among the sources of renewable energy, solar energy is considered the most promising since the energy reaching earth in one hour is greater than the annual consumption by human beings. Thus, various types of photovoltaic devices have been invented to harvest solar energy. However, the construction of these devices can be quite expensive and required advanced processing techniques. The dye sensitized solar cell (DSC) is one promising technology which can potentially be constructed at low cost with simple procedures and with lower environmental impact than most other available photovoltaics. DSCs typically consist of a working electrode with a mesoporous oxide layer composed of nano-size particles coated on a conducting glass. Attached to the surface of the nanocrystalline film is a monolayer of a photoactive dye. An electrolyte consisting of a redox couple is filled between the working electrode and the counter electrode, a conducting glass coated with a catalyst. The function of the electrolyte is to transport charge between two electrodes and to regenerate the photo-oxidized/reduced dye, following photo-induced injection into the semiconductor. This thesis focuses on the development of new DSC electrolytes based on transition metal complexes as redox couples with a view to improving the environmental friendliness and performance in both n-type and p-type devices. In n-type DSCs (n-DSCs), light illumination initiates the photoexcitation of the dye which then injects an electron in to the conduction band of the n-type semiconductor. The injected electron flows through the external circuit towards the counter electrode while the reduced redox mediator in the electrolyte regenerates the photo-oxidized dye. Then, the oxidized redox mediator undergoes reduction by electron injection at the counter electrode completing the charge transfer cycle. In contrast, the electron flow in p-type DSCs (p-DSCs) is directly opposite to that of n-DSCs. In these devices the photo-excited dye injects a hole into the valence band of the p-type semiconductor. In other words, an electron is transferred to the photo-excited dye from the valence band of the p-type semiconductor followed by photo-excitation. The reduced dye is then regenerated by the oxidized redox mediator in the electrolyte. The oxidized redox mediator is restored by injection of an electron from the reduced redox mediator into the counter electrode which then flows through the external circuit towards the working electrode to complete the cycle. In searching for environmental friendly redox mediators, a manganese based redox mediator, tris(acetylacetonato)manganese(III)/(IV), was utilized in n-DSCs. In addition, to the low toxicity of acetylacetonate complexes, there is the possibility to fine tuning of the redox potential by applying a wide variety of acetylacetone derivatives. Tris(acetylacetonato)manganese(III)/(IV) mediated devices demonstrated promising performances with both organic and metal based sensitizers leading to a vast selection of sensitizers. A good overall energy conversion of 4.4% was demonstrated for these devices in conjunction with both types of sensitizers. Due to the impressive properties of acetylacetonate complexes and suitable redox potentials, the tris(acetylacetonato)iron(II)/(III) complexes were used as redox mediators in p-DSCs. Development of redox shuttles with suitable redox potentials and fast dye regeneration kinetics is vital for further improvement in p-DSC efficiencies. Application of a nickel oxide (NiO) blocking layer on the working electrode suppressed unfavourable back reactions at the electrolyte/working electrode interface. Furthermore, fast dye regeneration kinetics were observed for the tris(acetylacetonato)iron(II)/(III) redox mediator which led to the best current density and the best overall energy conversion efficiency (2.5%) reported so far for p-DSCs. The efficiency of p-DSCs is limited mainly due to the highly coloured semiconductor material in use (NiO). None of the alternative materials introduced, such as; copper based semiconductor materials and boron-doped diamond, could surpass the performance of the devices based on NiO. Recently, surprising p-type conductivity was revealed on well-known n-type degenerate semiconductor, indium doped tin oxide (ITO). Yet, the reported performance for p-DSCs based on ITO was quite low compared to NiO based devices. To further exploit this property and develop devices with better efficiencies, mesoporous ITO was applied in p-DSCs with three different redox mediators iodide/triiodide, tris(ethylenediamine)cobalt(II)/(III) and tris(acetylacetonato)iron(II)/(III). For tris(acetylacetonato)iron(II)/(III) mediated devices an efficiency of 2% was reached, which rivalled our best result of 2.5% for devices based on NiO. The mechanism of operation of the ITO based devices was also analysed and ITO shows a significant local density of states arising below -4.8 eV, that initiates electron transfer from the ITO to the excited dye leading to the photocathodic current within the device. Comparative studies also indicated that the rate of recombination at the ITO/electrolyte interface was faster than in the case of NiO. Therefore, development of redox mediators with faster dye regeneration kinetics or designing sensitizers with longer charge separated state may facilitate construction of more efficient p-DSCs based on mesoporous ITO. Finally, p-DSCs were constructed with an aqueous electrolyte based on (diaminosarcophagine)cobalt(II)/(III). Properties, such as low light absorption in visible region and more negative redox potential (vs. NHE), encouraged their use as p-DSCs redox mediators. The highest reported voltages for p-DSCs were measured (>800 mV) for these devices and were attributed to more negative redox potential. Moreover, the dependence of the device performance on pH of the electrolyte was studied. The redox potential of the electrolyte shifted from -0.10 V to -0.34 V (vs. NHE) when pH was varied from 4 to 7 and then remained the same up to pH 11. The best device performance (1.33%) was recorded at pH 8.In summary, a series of transition metal complexes were introduced as redox mediators for either n-type or p-type DSCs that pave the way to enhance device performance. Furthermore, ITO was shown to be a suitable semiconductor material for p-DSCs that could overcome the major drawback in these devices.

In electrolytes that have large lipophilic cations, voltammetry of the [Co(DTB)3]2+/3+ couple is nearly Nernstian in appearance on nominally oxide-free metal surfaces. In contrast, on semiconductor electrodes in electrolytes with small, hard cations such as Li+, the electron transfer rates are so slow that it is difficult to measure any Faradaic current even at overpotentials of ±1 V. These studies are of direct relevance to the operation of cobalt-based mediators in solar cells. The research has also shown that these mediators are compatible with copper phenantroline based dyes, in contrast to I- due to the insolubility of CuI.
