Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was performed to quantify the characteristics of the sprays of coaxial injectors with particular emphasis on those aspects relevant to the performance of rocket engines. Measurements for coaxial air blast atomizers were obtained using air to represent the gaseous stream and water to represent the liquid stream. A wide range of flow conditions were examined for sprays with and without swirl for gaseous streams. The parameters varied include Weber number, gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, swirl, and nozzle geometry. Measurements were made with a phase Doppler velocimeter. Major conclusions of the study focused upon droplet size as a function of Weber number, effect of gas flow rate on atomization and spray spread, effect of nozzle geometry on atomization and spread, effect of swirl on atomization, spread, jet recirculation and breakup, and secondary atomization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments using high speed, high magnification, and high contrast photography on airblast coaxial atomizers were carried out to study the wave characteristics of liquid surfaces, ligament breakup, and droplet formation. Liquid flow rate was changed from 4 to 50 kg/h, corresponding to a velocity range of 1.5 to 18 m/s, and a Reynolds number range of 1400 to 18000. Air flow rate was varied from 8 to 70 kg/h, corresponding to a velocity range of 22 to 180 m/s, and a Reynolds number range of 13000 to 105000. Tube wall thicknesses of 145 and 320 microns were used. Under different flow conditions, different jet instabilities (capillary, helical and Kelvin-Helmholtz) and different dominant mechanisms of ligament formation were observed. One of the most surprising experimental results is that, under certain flow conditions, the coaxial round liquid jet, surrounded by an axisymmetric annular air stream, forms a flat curling liquid sheet. This liquid sheet breaks into droplet clouds with a frequency of a few thousand Hertz and emits strong oscillations and fluctuating, highly non-axisymmetric vibrations.

Book Synopsis Effects of Airblast Atomizer Design Upon Spray Quality by : A. K. Jasuja
Download or read book Effects of Airblast Atomizer Design Upon Spray Quality written by A. K. Jasuja and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the results of numerous investigations that have been conducted on airblast atomization as applied to gas turbine engines. The primary motivation for this is the need to identify the effect that various design features have upon the spray quality so that atomizers of optimum performance can be designed with a minimum of cost and complexity. Attention is focused upon such factors as the atomizer scale, configuration, the nature of fuel preparation before exposure to air, etc, for the most commonly used pre-filming and plain-jet airblast atomizers. The experimental mean drop size data included in this paper has been obtained through the use of well-established laser light-scattering techniques over a wide range of conditions. The general conclusion drawn from the data that is currently available is that the plain-jet airblast atomizers featuring multiple, transversely injected liquid jets into a swirling airstream yield spray quality comparable to that achieved by their pre-filming counterparts especially under high air pressure conditions. Book Synopsis Atomization and Sprays by : Arthur H. Lefebvre
Download or read book Atomization and Sprays written by Arthur H. Lefebvre and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this long-time bestseller provides a framework for designing and understanding sprays for a wide array of engineering applications. The text contains correlations and design tools that can be easily understood and used in relating the design of atomizers to the resulting spray behavior. Written to be accessible to readers with a modest technical background, the emphasis is on application rather than in-depth theory. Numerous examples are provided to serve as starting points for using the information in the book. Overall, this is a thoroughly updated edition that still retains the practical focus and readability of the original work by Arthur Lefebvre.

Book Synopsis Experimental Study of the Spray Characteristics of a Research Airblast Atomizer by : Waldo A. Acosta
Download or read book Experimental Study of the Spray Characteristics of a Research Airblast Atomizer written by Waldo A. Acosta and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of airblast atomization was conducted using an especially designed atomizer in which the liquid first impinges on a splash plate, then is directed radially outward and is atomized by the air passing through two concentric, vaned swirlers that swirl the air in opposite directions. The effect of flow condition, air mass velocity (mass flow rate per unit area, rho sub A U sub A and liquid to air ratio on the mean drop size was studied. Seven different ethanol solutions were used to simulate changes in fuel physical properties. The range of atomizing air velocities was from 30 to 80 m/s. The mean drop diameter was measured at ambient temperature (295 K) and atmospheric pressure.
Book Synopsis Liquid Rocket Engine Combustion Instability by : Vigor Young
Download or read book Liquid Rocket Engine Combustion Instability written by Vigor Young and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Since the invention of the V-2 rocket during World War II, combustion instabilities have been recognized as one of the most difficult problems in the development of liquid propellant rocket engines. This book is the first published in the United States on the subject since NASA's Liquid Rocket Combustion Instability (NASA SP-194) in 1972. In this book, experts cover four major subject areas: engine phenomenology and case studies, fundamental mechanisms of combustion instability, combustion instability analysis, and engine and component testing. Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of technical information from Russia and China--a first.
