Book excerpt: The Coastal Benthic Boundary Layer (CBBL) Special Research Program is a 5-year Office of Naval Research study that addressed the physical characterization and modeling of benthic boundary layer processes and the impact these processes have on seafloor structure, properties and behavior. This final report is a summary of the results compiled and published from FY92 through FY98. Quantitative physical models of the benthic boundary layer were tested in a series of experiments at coastal locations where differing environmental processes determine sediment structure. The sites were Eckernforde Bay, Baltic Sea; the West Florida Sand Sheet off Panama City, Florida; the lower Florida Keys; and the shallow continental shelf off Northern California. Predictive models developed through this program should enhance MCM technological capabilities in several important areas including acoustic and magnetic detection, classification, and neutralization of proud and buried mines; shock wave propagation; prediction of mine burial; and sediment classification. This report includes an introduction to the program, a summary of the results of those experiments, a list of publications that have resulted from CBBL research, and final reports from 24 of the 30 groups supported by the CBBL.

In this report, results from the third year of the CBBL are summarized. Included are preliminary results from 1995 experiments conducted in carbonate sediments of the Florida Keys (The Key West Campaign). Also included are analyses of data collected during earlier experiments conducted on the soft methane-rich sediments of Eckemforde Bay (Baltic Sea) and on the sandy relict sediments of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Year-end reports for the 19 projects supported by the CBBL are included along with a list of publications supported by this program.

Book excerpt: A 5-year Special Research Program (SRP) has been established at the Naval Research Laboratory that addresses the physical characterization and modeling of benthic boundary layer processes and the subsequent impact of these processes on the seafloor properties that affect mine countermeasure operations. This special project outlines the SRP scientific program and reviews the results of the four workshops convened to establish scientific priorities. Workshop participants agreed that sediment structure provides the common perspective: to quantitatively model relationships among sediment physical properties; to quantify the effects of environmental processes on sediment properties; and to model sediment behavior (acoustic, electrical, and mechanical). Hypotheses based on quantitative physical models that incorporate three-dimensional sediment structure will be tested by a series of field experiments at coastal locations where differing environmental processes dominate sediment structure. These experiments stress the role of sediment structure in determining high-frequency acoustic phenomena such as scattering, penetration, and propagation, as well as the physical relationships between remotely sensed acoustic properties and mechanical strength parameters. Book excerpt: The Conference on the Benthic Boundary Layer was held under the auspices of the NATO Science Committee as part of its continuing effort to promote the useful progress of science through international cooperation. Science Committee Conferences are deliberately designed to focus attention on unsolved problems, with carefully selected participants invited to provide complementary expertise from a variety of relevant disciplines. Through inten sive discussion in small groups they seek to reach a consensus on assessments and recommendations for future research emphasis, which it is hoped will be of value to the larger scientific community. The subjects treated over the past few years have been as varied as science itself-e.g., computer software engineering, chemical catalysis, and materials and energy research. The present effort evolved from informal discussions between marine geolo gists, chemists, and biologists which underlined the desirability of improved communication among those concerned with the benthic layer. In both scien tific and technological terms this is an exciting frontier, rich in promise but poorly understood at present. It is particularly striking to realize that there are at least as many definitions of the benthic layer as there are disciplines involved, and it seemed clear that there was much to be gained by a detailed exchange of views on research capabilities, trends, and priorities. The results of the meeting appear to have confirmed the hopes of the sponsors.
