It is a driver that push people to re-think again the way the resources from the Earth are being used. This paper aims to study a possible transition before it is possible to utilize 100% green energy. Co-optimization systems are proposed in order to add flexibility, in this case, to the power system and therefore, introduce as much as possible green energy to societies. To be more specific, a co-optimization model where the natural gas is used in the gasfired power plants to produce the extra energy needed to meet demand is developed. At the same time, minimizing the total system costs of both systems. Besides, this master thesis also proposes a co-optimization between power and natural gas systems under the uncertainty deriving from renewable energy sources. To do so, the application of chance-constrained programming is a crucial factor. As a result, by assuming known the probability distribution of the total wind power mismatch in the recourse stage, it is possible to quantify the optimal scheduled power to dispatch in the first stage, minimizing the overall system costs and obtaining the maximum wind penetration as possible. Lastly, several factors are modified to understand, which are the main drivers that affect the most to chance constraints - optimal power flow. The risk level chosen for this new approach and the consequences of varying it is also shown to understand how significant the degree of risk is applied to the chance constraints and how it can affect both variables and total system costs.

Book excerpt: Power systems worldwide are becoming more reliant on energy from natural gas, wind, and solar, posing potential reliability and coordination challenges from the tighter coupling of these infrastructure systems. This paper proposes a framework for the market-based coordination of electricity and natural gas system operations. The proposed framework includes a power system model that accounts for flexibility in the commitment of power plants with short start-up and shut-down times, coupled with a dynamic gas model that simulates when gas cannot be delivered to generators. The capabilities of the framework are illustrated using real-world electric power and gas systems, including scenarios around wind and solar penetrations and the analysis of time-variant, "shaped flow" gas nominations. Our results indicate that coordination between power and gas systems improves total gas delivery and reduces out-of-merit order dispatch in the electricity system, and that shaped flows may reduce unserved gas in systems with high penetrations of wind and solar.

Our work is motivated by the increasingly tighter interdependency between natural gas and power systems because of the increasing number of natural gas-fired units for electricity production. First, we develop a scheduling model under natural gas supply uncertainty. Second, we propose a nonlinear dynamic natural gas scheduling model and a electric power scheduling problem solved via decomposition. Then, we develop a coordinated expansion planning model of natural gas and power systems. Last, we develop a coordinated expansion planning model of storage facilities, and natural gas and power systems. We use the first scheduling model to analyze the effect of two types of natural gas-supply conditions, low-cost gas supply with availability issues and high-cost gas supply in a system with fast-ramping power load, on scheduling and dispatch decisions. These two cases mimic the situations in the ISO New England system and in the California ISO system, respectively. The second scheduling model is used to coordinate the operations of natural gas and power systems that accounts for the physics and engineering aspects of both systems, considering the interactions of the natural gas and power systems in gas supply and gas price of gas-fired units. The model for the coordinated expansion planning of natural gas and power systems is used to analyze the trade-off between building natural gas-related and other facilities. The model for the coordinated expansion planning of storage facilities, and natural gas and power systems allows analyzing the effect of storage facilities on mitigating gas supply shortage. Both planning models embody an appropriate balance between model accuracy and computational tractability and represent the uncertainty pertaining to natural gas and power load growth. Finally, we state the contribution of our work and the suggestions for future research.

With the shale gas revolution, coal retirements and environmental regulations, the interdependency of natural gas and electricity has increased. These changes impact pipeline financing and power generation dispatch. Potential solutions to gas-electricity interdependency challenges such as mismatched market schedules are not too difficult to determine. However, a quantitative model is needed in order to evaluate these solutions in order to provide insights into which solutions to interdependency concerns offer the best outcomes. While it is clear that natural gas constraints will affect the cost of the electricity system, there is a need for modeling to explore the relationship between fuel uncertainty and system cost. In this thesis, a quantitative optimal flow model with a dynamic market mechanism is used to measure the effects of natural gas-fired power producer's fuel uncertainty on the net social benefit to consumers and producers. Modeling results indicate that fuel price uncertainty negatively affects social welfare while demand response, information availability and coordination improvements limit the impact of natural gas fuel uncertainty. To simulate improved coordination, a second model is developed which includes natural gas network constraints. The results of this model demonstrate how joint optimization of the networks could relax fuel constraints on gas-fired generators and improve social welfare.

We first propose and demonstrate a modeling platform for examining the interdependence of natural gas and electricity networks based on a direct current unit-commitment and economic dispatch model for the power system and a transient hydraulic gas model for the gas system. We use this platform to analyze the value of day-ahead coordination of power and natural gas network operations and to show the importance of considering gas system constraints when analyzing power systems operation with high penetration of gas generators and variable renewable energy sources. In the second study, we utilize our modeling platform to consider the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Order 809, issued in 2015 to improve day-ahead and intraday coordination of power and gas systems. Finally, in the third study we expand our modeling platform to focus on market-based coordination of electricity and natural gas system operations for a real system, namely a subset of the power and gas networks in the Front Range region of Colorado. We use real system data to evaluate the benefits of coordination operations under different conditions, including different levels of renewable penetration and the use of time-variant, shaped flow nominations. Our results indicate that coordination at various timescales can contribute to a reduction in curtailed gas in high-stress periods (such as those with large ramps in gas offtakes) and a reduction in energy consumption of gas compressor stations. We find that intraday coordination can reduce total power system production costs and natural gas deliverability constraints, yielding cost and reliability benefits. We observe these benefits for the test system as well as in the Colorado case study, where we find that coordination and shaped flows may provide additional value for systems with high penetration of variable renewable energy. Together, these three studies demonstrate a pathway for integrated gas and electricity grid modeling and for studying the benefits of coordinated operations of these increasingly interdependent energy systems.

Consequently, it is worthwhile to consider the high interdependency between the gas and electricity networks. In this dissertation, several co-optimization models for the optimal operation and planning of gas-electricity integrated energy systems (IES) are proposed and investigated considering uncertainties from wind power and load demands. For the coordinated operation of gas-electricity IES: 1) an interval optimization based coordinated operating strategy for the gas-electricity IES is proposed to improve the overall system energy efficiency and optimize the energy flow. The gas and electricity infrastructures are modeled in detail and their operation constraints are fully considered. Then, a demand response program is incorporated into the optimization model, and its effects on the IES operation are investigated. Interval optimization is applied to address wind power uncertainty in IES. 2) a stochastic optimal operating strategy for gas-electricity IES is proposed considering N-1 contingencies in both gas and electricity networks. Since gas pipeline contingencies limit the fuel deliverability to gas-fired units, N-1 contingencies in both gas and electricity networks are considered to ensure that the system operation is able to sustain any possible power transmission or gas pipeline failure. Moreover, wind power uncertainty is addressed by stochastic programming. 3) a robust scheduling model is proposed for gas-electricity IES with uncertain wind power considering both gas and electricity N-1 contingencies. The proposed method is robust against wind power uncertainty to ensure that the system can sustain possible N-1 contingency event of gas pipeline or power transmission. Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models. For the co-optimization planning of gas-electricity IES: a two-stage robust optimization model is proposed for expansion co-planning of gas-electricity IES. The proposed model is solved by the column and constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm. The locations and capacities of new gas-fired generators, power transmission lines, and gas pipelines are optimally determined, which is robust against the uncertainties from electric and gas load growth as well as wind power.
