Book excerpt: The United Nations declared 2012 the year of cooperatives, emphasizing that there is an alternative to privately owned firms. While greed and mismanagement have caused world financial and economic crises, co-ops offer another type of business for economic activities that is less exposed to aggressive capitalism. This book provides a problem-oriented overview of the development of cooperatives over the last fifty years. The global study addresses the major challenges cooperatives face, such as the organizational innovations introduced to acquire necessary risk-capital and implement growth-related strategies, the wave of demutualization in developed nations and their ability to construct an original consumer politics. The contributors to this volume discuss the successes and failures of the cooperatives and ask whether they are an outdated model of enterprise. They document a wave of foundations of new co-ops, new forms of collaboration between them and a growing trend toward globalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Williams surveys the history of the cooperative movement from its origins in the 18th century and deals with the theory of cooperation, as contrasted with the 'Standard Economic Model', based on competition. The book contains the results of field studies of a number of successful cooperatives both in the developed and developing world. It includes insights from personal interviews of cooperative members and concludes by considering the successes and challenges of the cooperative movement as an alternative to the global neo-colonialism and imperialism that now characterizes free-market capitalist approaches to globalization. The book considers democratic and local control of essential economic activities such as the production, distribution, and retailing of goods and services. It suggests that cooperative approaches to these economic activities are already reducing poverty and resulting in equitable distributions of wealth and income without plundering the resources of developing countries.

This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The co-operative movement has played a notable role in the retail, wholesale, productive, political, educational and cultural life of Britain. As a movement it has consciously represented consumer interests and has carried out work in the arena of consumer protection. However, its study has suffered relative neglect when compared to research into the Labour Party, trade unions and the wider politics of retail and consumption. This book reassesses the impact of the co-operative movement on various communities in Britain during the period 1914-1960, providing a comprehensive account of the grass roots influence of co-operatives during both war and peace. This is a national study with a local dimension. It considers how national directives and perspectives were locally applied, if indeed they were applicable within the context of individual societies. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of the co-operative movement by examining various societies in England, Scotland and Wales. Particular attention is paid to the midlands, due to the movement's expansion here during the interwar period, with consideration also given to comparative developments in Europe. The author explores: the movement's relationship with other labour organizations; its cultural and social aspects (including the role sport played in co-operative societies); the politicization of the movement and local response to the formation of the Co-operative Party; the education of co-operators; what co-operative membership entailed and how co-operative ideology was expressed; the economic impact membership could have on families (including the provision of financial assistance and credit); and the co-operative movement's development alongside consumer activism. The book is a major national study of the growth of Co-operation during this crucial period of British social, economic and consumer history. Given the few modern scholarly works on Co-operation, it is a timely and much needed reassessment.

Not illustrated. 1884 edition. Excerpt: ...to help the circulation of the Co-operative News, which, if members will read it regularly, may develope their interest in, and knowledge of, the movement very rapidly. (See p. 126.) 6. Social and Recreational Gatherings.--It is a good thing to have these gatherings, and not at casual and irregular times, but at definite times in the year, so that members look forward to them. This makes a great difference to their success. Some committees do not take the trouble to hold them at all; they look after the business, and leave social progress to look after itself. A tea party, with meeting to follow, at which there are both speaking and singing, is the usual plan. At the tea and in the singing, women and the Women's League can be of much use. Speakers are often invited from the Cooperative Board, Wholesale Societies, or Guild. Local magnates are sometimes asked, if likely to be really in sympathy with the cause. 7. Conversation Rooms, &c.--Co-operative societies could, if they chose, develope round themselves all the healthier influences of working men's clubs; discussions and debates will be of much value; the influence of music and musical gatherings is almost always good. Cricket clubs may be started, and a great deal might be done (which reel not be identified with more purely educational work) to develope the social side of the work, which at present is comparatively so little advancing. It is to this work that the ability and vigour of men not absorbed in the business work of the society might be turned. 8. Eelation of the Society to the Central Organisations.--All the best societies join the Cooperative Union, and support it well (see Chap. VI.). All true Co-operators, who have the welfare of the movement at heart, may well urge...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting to yes is not the same as getting results. In Beyond Dealmaking, international negotiation expert and mediator Melanie Billings-Yun shows that the key to winning unbeatable, long-term results in today’s complex economic landscape is to negotiate solid long-term relationships. Traditionally, negotiation has been approached as an isolated activity, separate from the business relationship. But those who focus only on getting the deal closed often find their victory doesn’t translate into sustainable profits. Any deal is as fragile as the paper it’s written on. Countless disputes arise and deals easily collapse when the negotiation process leaves one party unhappy, feeling forced into unfair terms, or even disgruntled at a change in circumstances. In five clear steps, Billings-Yun takes the pain and fear out of negotiation with her proven GRASP method, showing how to: Understand the Goals of all parties, beyond the immediate deal Develop Routes to maximize mutual benefit and promote synergy among the parties Build openness, trust, and common understanding through valid Arguments Benchmark Substitutes to keep relationships from growing stale or one-sided Increase your Persuasion through empathetic communication and genuine care Filled with real-life examples of negotiations that have gone right and wrong, this groundbreaking book shows how fairness, honesty, empathy, flexibility, and mutual problem-solving lead to sustainable success. By following the powerful five-step GRASP negotiation process, anyone can learn to negotiate in a way that is positive, exciting, and rewarding. Most importantly, they will learn that the greatest victories come not through fighting battles, but through building alliances.
