Book Synopsis Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications by : Vanda Rideout
Download or read book Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications written by Vanda Rideout and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rideout focuses on the protection of the public interest, a crucial element neglected by most recent studies, and shows that although alliances have been formed between labour, consumers, and public interest activists, significant disagreements over issues such as free trade, long distance and local competition, and a targeted subsidy program for very low-income Canadians have meant that this united front has not been able to counter the forces of the new neo-liberal telecommunication policy regime. Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications details the complex relationships between the various corporate and government interests, shows how the changes they brought about have locked Canada's telecommunications system into the orbit of the US system, and discusses the implications this has for Canadians.
Book Synopsis Telecommunications in Canada by : Robert E. Babe
Download or read book Telecommunications in Canada written by Robert E. Babe and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides Canada's first comprehensive, integrated treatment of the emergence and development of key communication sectors: telegraph telephones, cable TV, broadcasting, communication satellites, and electronic publishing. By focusing on real institutions, actual (and frequently predatory) business practices, and law and regulatory policies, in both historical and contemporary perspectives, Babe helps demystify current communication issues. Stressing the flexibility of communication 'technologies' on the one hand, and the element of corporate power on the other, Babe reintroduces the principle of corporate/governmental responsibility for communication outcomes, a principle that has been largely drowned out by the shrill cries of 'Information Revolution.'

Book excerpt: Renowned advocate and legal trailblazer Peter S. Grant has acted for – and against – virtually all of the major players in the Canadian broadcast and telecommunications industry. His résumé features stints as a rapporteur for UNESCO, Special Counsel for the CRTC, Broadcasting Arbitrator for Canada’s political parties, and advocate for the underdog in the David-and-Goliath struggle to expand Canada’s culture industries. In his sweeping memoir, Changing Channels: Confessions of a Canadian Communications Lawyer, Grant affords readers an insider’s glimpse into some of the biggest changes in the history of Canadian communications policy. Interspersed with fond recollections of his hometown of Kapuskasing and anecdotes of his growing family, Grant provides an eye-opening account of the Canadian communications industries. He documents his role in regulating the telecom carriers, increasing competition among service providers, and acting for dozens of broadcast programming services in front of the CRTC. Grant’s reasoned prose highlights his far-reaching expertise in all areas of communications law and cultural policy, and makes his story compelling to anyone who has picked up a phone or turned on a television set.
Book Synopsis System Interconnection CNCP to TCTS Member Companies by : C. P. MacArthur
Download or read book System Interconnection CNCP to TCTS Member Companies written by C. P. MacArthur and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to determine the advisability of allowing competition in the toll market segment of the telecommunications industry in Canada. Meaningful competition is achievable only when the consumer has access to the vendor's facilities via the local switched network of the franchised common carrier. This type of access, referred to as system interconnection, had been illegal in Canada until May 17, 1979 when the CRTC handed down its decision on CNCP's application for system interconnection with Bell Canada. Through analysis of the operating environment and in particular the relationship between the common carriers, the regulators and the appropriate level of government, we have shown how the industry developed and its current mode of operation. Of primary importance is the identification of the market segments, the level of investment and relative cost of serving these markets and the revenues generated within these segments. Review of the economic literature dealing with competition in regulated public utilities and monitoring of the ongoing evolution of the industry in the United States provided the required information to reach a conclusion. The conclusion consisted of rejection of the CRTC's decision on the basis that fragmented decisions made without the benefit of clear industry-wide objectives would prove to be dysfunctional in the long run. Alternative and supportive recommendations are provided after substantiation of the conclusion.

Download or read book Logics of Resistance written by Steve Dubb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines how unions representing telephone workers--one in Mexico and one in British Columbia, Canada--have responded to changes in technology, work organization, and government policy stemming from the rise of a more global economy. Some business writers have suggested that globalization will compel unions to cooperate with managers as workers are more exposed to international competition. By analyzing the actual record of two unions in the highly internationalized telecommunications industry, however, a different picture emerges.
