Book excerpt: A gorgeously rendered graphic novel of Daniel Alarcón’s story City of Clowns. From the author of The King Is Always Above the People, which was longlisted for the 2017 National Book Award for Fiction. Oscar “Chino” Uribe is a young Peruvian journalist for a local tabloid paper. After the recent death of his philandering father, he must confront the idea of his father’s other family, and how much of his own identity has been shaped by his father’s murky morals. At the same time, he begins to chronicle the life of street clowns, sad characters who populate the violent and corrupt city streets of Lima, and is drawn into their haunting, fantastical world. This remarkably affecting story by Daniel Alarcón was included in his acclaimed first book, War by Candlelight, and now, in collaboration with artist Sheila Alvarado, it takes on a new, thrilling form. This graphic novel, with its short punches of action and images, its stark contrasts between light and dark, truth and fiction, perfectly corresponds to the tone of Chino’s story. With the city of Lima as a character, and the bold visual language from the story, City of Clowns is moving, menacing, and brilliantly vivid.

But how much do you really know about the profession that takes comedy very seriously? This fascinating book takes the reader on a journey through the ages, explaining how clowns such as the whiteface and auguste came to be. You'll read about history's best-loved performers such as Joseph Grimaldi, the father of modern clowning, and learn about the origin of terms used today such as the ‘clown alley’. If you want to know why blue make-up is supposed to bring bad luck, and who the literary world’s first ever killer clown was, then this is the book for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We never planned to move into a house next to a family of clowns, but then . . . you never know. I was a special education teacher and we were still renting, awaiting the sale of a house in Pennsylvania. It wasn’t long before we started greeting the unusual neighbors to our right as we left the house. They sat in lawn chairs outside their garage in the morning, to enjoy the early sunlight and greet the neighbors. We learned they were clowns. They were weird: not bad weird, just kind of unexpected weird. Remy had been the first clown in the family. Gwen was married to Remy’s brother, Rene. The two brothers and Gwen grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Remy was a rodeo clown, who would dash out and distract the bucking broncos when their riders were thrown off. It seemed like a good gig, so Gwen and Rene decided to join. Before long, they were invited to audition/interview for Barnum and Bailey, and they became real circus clowns. We heard stories of their adventures, as well as their injuries, from falling from scaffolding, hanging the trapeze in Lyon, France (Rene) to getting run over by the steel ball with the motorcyclist racing around inside. (Gwen.) They grew, I believe, to be happy we befriended them, unlike other neighbors who would walk by, ignoring them. Oh, and by the way, I did get permission from the clowns to use their real names. For me, it was a delightful way to remember them and memorialize those people who live on the outskirts of respectable society, in part because they truly are different.

Book excerpt: With a little bit of magic, one plucky clown is determined to turn Christmas around for a village that’s down on its luck in this enchanting tale from Tomie dePaola. Every midwinter, little Jingle and his family, Il Circo Piccolo, The Little Circus, travel through the countryside to the city for their special Christmas performance. Each year, they stop at the same little village to put on a show for its residents. It’s Jingle’s favorite night. This year, though, things are different. There is no smoke coming out of the chimneys. Everything is closed up. And the few people still in town have fallen on hard times and don’t have the money to see the circus anymore. But Jingle is not so easily deterred. With the help of his baby animals, he is determined to put on a show that no one will forget.

Book excerpt: The intimacy of the one-ring circus produced the classic clown routines that flourished until the mid-twentieth century and then disappeared with the rise of the grand circus. They have been lost until now. By seeking out the little band of surviving clowns who worked in the old tradition and setting down their scenes, Tristan Rémy, the eminent circus historian, has rescued a theatrical treasure. Thanks to Rémy's persistence, the forty-eight scenes presented here contain not only the spoken words but the manner of line delivery and the physical turns. So they remain superbly suitable for performance. Most of them are written for just three actors—the white-faced clown, August the stooge, and the supercilious ringmaster. Sets are unnecessary. And their combination of the verbal with the physical has timeless appeal. Bernard Sahlins's translation is masterfully attuned to present-day audiences. In his foreword, Mr. Sahlins notes that these scenes have been continually remounted in Europe, attesting to their fundamental vitality and universality. “Clearly there is a debt, witting and unwitting, owed to the clown of the ring by the great comedians of our century. With this book these scenes and the clowns who invented and played them now take their honored place in our theatrical legacy.”
