Book excerpt: A Victorian heiress weds for duty but falls prey to forbidden desire in this compelling family saga—first in the Barforth Trilogy. At sixteen Verity Barforth becomes sole heiress to a fortune founded on the wool mills of Yorkshire. But women—whether heiress or mill hand in the Barforth weaving sheds—do not control their own destinies. Obedient to the conventions of the Victorian age, she accepts a marriage of convenience and cloaks her proud spirit in the silks and satins of a society hostess. But for Verity, convention is not enough. When at last she falls in love it is not with her husband, and she becomes the center of a powerful drama of infidelity, jealousy and revenge, played out against the magnificent landscapes of the Yorkshire moors and the brutal poverty of the mills. The first novel in the Barforth Trilogy, this gripping family saga is perfect for fans of Sandy Taylor, Katie Flynn, and Josephine Cox.

Book excerpt: While his contemporaries considered Blake a madman, we now appreciate him as an important figure in the development of romantic and mystical poetry. Blake's poetry is unique from every angle: It possesses a philosophical depth that impacts the reader at a spiritual level. Blake created his own mythological world, which he outlined in his prophetic books. His complex world is inhabited by deities and heroes to whom he gave unusual names: Urizen, Luva, Tarmas, Urton, Los, Enitarmon, Aania, etc. The inspiration for Blake's mythology has many origins, including the Bible, Greek and Roman mythology, Scandinavian Eddas, and treatises by occultists and religious mystics. This visionary work explores themes of spirituality, politics, and humanity's relationship with the divine, all intertwined with Blake's intricate and symbolic artwork. Written in Blake's signature poetic style, 'Jerusalem' is a masterpiece of Romantic literature that challenges traditional religious and societal norms. This work stands out for its unique combination of poetry and visual art, creating a truly immersive reading experience. As one delves into 'Jerusalem,' they are transported into Blake's mystical world, filled with profound insights and thought-provoking imagery. William Blake, known for his visionary poetry and rebellious spirit, drew inspiration from various theological and philosophical sources, as well as his own personal beliefs and experiences. His unconventional approach to art and literature has solidified his place as a key figure of the Romantic movement. 'Jerusalem' serves as a powerful example of Blake's artistic genius and his ability to create profound works that resonate with readers across generations. I highly recommend 'Jerusalem' to anyone interested in exploring the intersection of art, poetry, and metaphysical thought in a truly captivating and enlightening way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the incredible evidence of Jesus' life not covered by the Bible! The so-called ‘missing years of Jesus’ – the 18 years that are unaccounted for in the Bible from when Jesus was a boy of 12 to his sudden reappearance at the age of 30. Archaeologist and classical scholar Dennis Price has investigated the clues in Blake’s evocative poem 'Jerusalem' and has paid meticulous attention to the accounts in the ancient Aramaic and Greek versions of the Bible, and he’s also conducted an exhaustive and unprecedented study into the myths and legends of Christ in Britain. With the assistance of specialists in their own fields and by viewing this enthralling subject as a modern missing person’s investigation, Dennis Price has pieced together the various pieces of the jigsaw and now presents compelling and highly original evidence that Christ did indeed visit Britain in the company of Joseph of Arimathea ‘in ancient times’. The weight of new material suggests that Christ remained in Britain for several years before eventually returning to his homeland in the east, and this truly extraordinary book now provides a wealth of new information for all those who are intensely curious about this otherwise undocumented period in the life of the most famous person the world’s ever known. The implications are astonishing and they are presented here, in ‘the greatest story never told’.

It focuses on the story of the universal human spirit that these books present.

Book excerpt: One of the great English Romantic poets, William Blake (1757-1827) was an artist, poet, mystic and visionary. His work ranges from the deceptively simple and lyrical Songs of Innocence and their counterpoint Experience - which juxtapose poems such as 'The Lamb' and 'The Tyger', and 'The Blossom' and 'The Sick Rose' - to highly elaborate, apocalyptic works, such as The Four Zoas, Milton and Jerusalem. Throughout his life Blake drew on a rich heritage of philosophy, religion and myth, to create a poetic worlds illuminated by his spiritual and revolutionary beliefs that have fascinated, intrigued and enchanted readers for generations.

Book excerpt: The essential work on Romanticism, revised and condensed for student convenience Standing as the essential work on Romanticism, Duncan Wu’s Romanticism: An Anthology has been appreciated by thousands of literature students and their teachers across the globe since its first appearance in 1994. This Fifth Edition has been revised to reduce the size of the book and the burden of carrying it around a university campus. It includes the six canonical authors: Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Byron, and Shelley. The Fourth Edition of the anthology, with complete and uncut texts of a wealth of Romantic authors, is available to all readers of the Fifth Edition via online access. Authors are introduced successively by their dates of birth; works are placed in order of composition where known and, when not known, by date of publication. Except for works in dialect or in which archaic effects were deliberately sought, punctuation and orthography are normalized, pervasive initial capitals and italics removed, and contractions expanded except where they are of metrical significance. Texts are edited for this volume from both manuscript and early printed sources. Romanticism: An Anthology contains everything a teacher needs for full coverage of the canonical poets, with illustrations and a chronological timeline to provide readers with important historical context.

Book excerpt: Why Not? After all, no-one had ever done it before. It would be one of the longest of all overland journeys – half way round the world, from the English Channel to Singapore. They knew that several expeditions had already tried it. Some had got as far as the desrts of Persia; a few had even reached the plains of India. But no one had managed to go on from there: over the jungle clad mountains of Assam and across northern Burma to Thailand and Malaya. Over the last 3,000 miles it seemed there were ‘just too many rivers and too few roads'. But no-one really knew … In fact, their problems began much earlier than that. As mere undergraduates, they had no money, no cars, nothing. But with a cool audacity, which was to become characteristic, they set to work – wheedling and cajoling. First, they coaxed the BBC to come up with some film for a possible TV series. They then gently persuaded the manufacturers to lend them two factory-fresh Land Rovers. A publisher was even sweet-talked into giving them an advance on a book. By the time they were ready to go, their sponsors (more than 80 of them) ranged from whiskey distillers to the makers of collapsible buckets. In late 1955, they set off. Seven months and 12,000 miles later, two very weary Land Rovers, escorted by police outriders, rolled into Singapore – to flash bulbs and champagne. Now, fifty years on, their book, ‘First Overland', is republished – with a foreword by Sir David Attenborough. After all, it was he who gave them that film.

This volume of verses by Jane Austen and her family contains all the known poems by Jane herself as well as a selection of work by her mother, her sister Cassandra, four of her brothers, her uncle James, her nieces Anna and Fanny, her nephew James Edward and other relatives. David Selwyn provides an introduction and full explanatory notes; his transcriptions, taken from autograph manuscripts or from the earliest copies, are precise in terms of spelling punctuation and layout.
