Book Synopsis Amazed and Confused by : Heather Zempel
Download or read book Amazed and Confused written by Heather Zempel and published by HarperChristian Resources. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people have prayed for something or someone in earnest, seeking God’s will, only to be left confused by God’s response. Sometimes we ask, “Why would a good God allow bad things to happen to good people?” In Amazed and Confused, Heather Zempel tackles this question head-on by exploring the book of Habakkuk. When the prophet Habakkuk prayed that God would bring change to the backsliding nation of Israel, this issue came to the forefront. Habakkuk begged God for revival and that He would turn the hearts of faithless people back to Him. God’s answer to Habakkuk was, “Take a look at the nations and watch what happens! You will be shocked and amazed” (1:5, The Voice). The vision God gave Habakkuk was one of warfare and exile. How do you respond when God answers your prayers in a way that seems out of line with his character and promises? Amazed and Confused proceeds systematically through the book of Habakkuk, exploring the prophet’s prayer, God’s response, and the prophet’s journey from confusion to worship. This interactive Bible study is the perfect choice for those who are hurting and confused about God’s responses to their prayers. Features include: Helpful guidance on a question without an easy answer Practical tools for studying the Minor Prophets Easy-to-understand, accessible language

Book Synopsis Regulating Confusion by : Thomas Reinert
Download or read book Regulating Confusion written by Thomas Reinert and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-17 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the urbanization of eighteenth-century English society, moral philosophers became preoccupied with the difference between individual and crowd behavior. In so doing, they set the stage for a form of political thought divorced from traditional moral reflection. In Regulating Confusion Thomas Reinert places Samuel Johnson in the context of this development and investigates Johnson’s relation to an emerging modernity. Ambivalent about the disruption, confusion, perplexity, and boundless variety apparent in the London of his day, Johnson was committed to the conventions of moral reflection but also troubled by the pressure to adopt the perspective of the crowd and the language of social theory. Regulating Confusion explores the consequences of his ambivalence and his attempt to order the chaos. It discusses his critique of moral generalizations, concept of moral reflection as a symbolic gesture, and account of what happens to the notion of character when individuals, having lost the support of moral convention, become faces in a crowd. Reflecting generally on the relationship between skepticism and political ideology, Reinert also discusses Johnson’s political skepticism and the forms of speculation and action it authorized. Challenging prevalent psychologizing and humanistic interpretations, Regulating Confusion leaves behind the re-emergent view of Johnson as a reactionary ideologue and presents him in a theoretically sophisticated context. It offers his style of skepticism as a model of poise in the face of confusion about the nature of political truth and personal responsibility and demonstrates his value as a resource for students of culture struggling with contemporary debates about the relationship between literature and politics.

Download or read book The God Confusion written by Gary Cox and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is God? Does he exist? Can we know? The God Confusion offers a down-to-earth beginner's guide for anyone interested in these questions. It does not evangelize for God and religion or, indeed, for atheism, secularism and science. Instead, it explores in a witty yet objective and balanced way the idea of God and the strengths and weaknesses of the standard arguments for his existence. Gary Cox shows that the philosophical reasoning at the heart of these arguments is logically incapable of moving beyond speculation to any kind of proof. The only credible philosophical position is therefore agnosticism. The God Confusion defends science generally and the theory of evolution in particular. It argues that if religion is not to appear increasingly outdated and ridiculous in the eyes of free-thinking, educated people, it must accommodate science and accept that science has replaced the old God of the gaps as an explanation of natural phenomena. Concluding that God may or may not exist, on the grounds that science, philosophy and theology are inherently incapable of proving or disproving his existence, The God Confusion acknowledges that religious faith based on a deliberate commitment to live as though there is a moral God is a coherent notion and a worthwhile, even prudent enterprise. At the same time, it rejects the idea of inner certainty as mere wishful thinking, arguing that it is not a coherent basis for belief and is simply bad faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Udder Confusion is an Alaska homesteader's true-life adventure. “Alaska!” You mean you're going to farm in Alaska? What are you going to harvest, ice and snow? You must be crazy.” With these statements from friends and family ringing in our ears, we pointed the Studebaker north. North to Alaska! We arrived in Alaska light on assets, young, vigorous, in good health, and optimistic about the future. Homesteading was exciting and full of experiences and each day was a new Alaska adventure. Life was hard, but we met each problem with determination and ambition. We learned that it isn't what happens to you, it's how you react that matters. Our memories are of hard work, dreams, disappointments, plus many pleasant experiences. Many of our homestead friends are still around and unfortunately some have passed on to the big homestead in the sky. We are in the fall of our years, with the energy of spring chickens, and look forward to our next Alaska adventure.
