Book excerpt: "Understanding how the brain decodes sensory information to give rise to behaviour remains an important problem in systems neuroscience. Across various sensory modalities (e.g. auditory, visual), the time-varying contrast of natural stimuli has been shown to carry behaviourally relevant information. However, it is unclear how such information is actually decoded by the brain to evoke perception and behaviour. Here, we used a combination of computational and experimental approaches to better understand the mechanisms by which closed-loop feedback enables sensory neurons to respond to weak contrasts. A simple mathematical model predicted that integration by downstream neurons via a convex-shaped nonlinearity was necessary and that these neurons should display lower detection thresholds than their afferent input as a result. To test these predictions, experimental recordings from downstream midbrain neurons within the electrosensory system of weakly electric Apteronotus leptorhynchus were made. We found that these neurons indeed displayed lower detection thresholds. This was primarily due to the fact that they displayed lower variability in their baseline activity, owing to lower mean firing rates. Using linear-nonlinear cascade models, we found that midbrain electrosensory neurons integrated afferent input via a convex nonlinearity thereby confirming modeling predictions. Our results thus reveal an elegant mechanism by which closed-loop feedback enables the detection of weak stimulus contrasts by sensory neurons, which in turn leads to perception and behavioral responses. Anatomical and functional similarities between the electrosensory system and other systems make it likely that our results will be generally applicable"--

The effective hardware implementation of the closed loop BCI system can be used in the many application in real-time neural activity analysis and feedback stimulation generation. The objective of the proposed design is to develop a feedback BCI system which enables the researchers to acquire the brain signal patterns from the 32 channels, record the action potentials. From the recorded action potentials, the system translates the data which gives information about the inter-spike samples and the channel number. This translated data then in-line with monitor screen to probe the visual cortex. The presented work uses various communication protocols such as AXI, TCP/IP, and SPI to interact with different blocks of the design. The prime focus of this thesis is to develop the ARM to FPGA interface and spike detection algorithm which is implemented on the programming logic using Verilog HDL. Along with, generation of the visual stimulation on host computer in real-time. The developed programming logic then incorporated with processing system to achieve the proposed system architecture. The functional performance of the closed loop BCI system is validated using two different set of input data samples. This work can find application in helping the neuroscience researchers to observe neuronal activity in the visual cortex by changing the visual stimulation patterns according to the detected action potential

Given the temperament of those who work in the field of color vision there seems little doubt that heated debates will continue, but for the present at least, the subject seems to be as close to settled as such things can be in science." How the brain represents color remains one of the most controversial topics in neurophysiology. We know that color is represented through an opponent mechanism, demonstrated by the fact that some colors are exclusive of others. Yet how these antagonistic chromatic axes are represented in the cortex has been a mystery. Dr. Conway mapped the spatial and temporal structure of the cone inputs to single neurons in the primary visual cortex of the alert macaque. Color cells had receptive fields that were often Double-Opponent, an organization of spatial and chromatic opponency sufficient to form the basis for color constancy and spatial color contrast. Almost all color cells gave a bigger response to color when preceded by an opposite color, suggesting that these cells also encode temporal color contrast. In sum, color perception is likely subserved by a subset of specialized neurons in the primary visual cortex. These cells are distinct from those that likely underlie form and motion perception. Color cells establish three color axes sufficient to describe all colors; moreover these cells are capable of computing spatial and temporal color contrast - and probably contribute to color constancy computations - because the receptive fields of these cells show spatial and temporal chromatic opponency.
