Book excerpt: Cloning the Messenger is a book about a woman, Eve Brown, who is hired to write the story of a cloned child. The child is brilliant, remarkable in many ways, and tells Eve he is the Messenger, here to warn people the end is near. The child, cloned from blood samples from the Shroud of Turin, is raised by the scientist who created the technology that made cloning possible. Until the end no one knows who the Anti-Christ is.

Book excerpt: The ability to successfully clone genes underlies the majority of our knowledge in molecular and cellular biology. Gene Cloning introduces the diverse array of techniques available to clone genes and how they can be used effectively both in the research laboratory, to gain knowledge about the gene, and for use in biotechnology, medicine, the pharmaceutical industry, and agriculture. It shows how cloning genes is an integral part of genomics and underlines its relevance in the post-genomic age, as a tool required to test predictions of gene regulation and function made through bioinformatics. Applications of gene cloning in medicine, both for diagnosis and treatment, and in the pharmaceutical industry and agriculture, are also covered in the book. Gene Cloning takes a fresh approach to teaching molecular and cellular biology and will be a valuable resource to both undergraduates and lecturers of biological and biomedical science courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The peptide hormones are small proteins that regulate cellular metabolism through their specific interactions with tissues of the endocrine, nervous, and immune systems, as well as in embry onic development. During the past ten years, refinements in the techniques of recombinant DNA technology have resulted in the cloning of genes encoding approximately 50 different hormonal and regulatory peptides, including those in which the peptides themselves and the mRNAs encoding the peptides are present in only trace amounts in the tissues of origin. In addition to provid ing the coding sequences of recognized hormonal and regulatory peptides, gene sequencing has uncovered new bioactive peptides encoded in the precursor pro hormones that are then liberated along with the hormonal peptides during cellular cleavages of the precursors. The encoding of multiple peptides in a single mono cistronic mRNA appears to be a genetic mechanism for the gener ation of biologic diversification without requiring amplification of gene sequences. Two of the objectives in the assembly of this book are to pre sent, in one volume, the known primary structures of the genes encoding several of the polypeptide hormones and related regulatory peptides, and to provide an account of the various ap proaches that have been used to identify and select the cloned genes encoding these polypeptides. The contents of the two in troductory chapters are intended to provide the reader with a brief background of the approaches to gene cloning and the struc ture and expression of hormone-encoding genes.

Book excerpt: It is early morning and after dispatching the guards, Nazaroff has just enter the castle of Aldo Camboini where Pope John Paul II is spending the night. He studies the old man's peaceful face a moment before driving a stiletto into his forehead. He departs as quietly as he came, taking no notice of the most valuable and important symbol of the Pope's religion, the Shroud of Turin. It is only after he has returned to his home when he reads of the tragic dealt of the Pope and the missed opportunity to destroy the precious cloth. He vows to return to destroy it and anyone who gets in his way.

Book excerpt: This important new reference work offers an outstanding collection of articles devoted to the discussion of "intracellular messengers". Extracellular stimuli ("first messengers") bind to receptors on the plasma membrane of cells to trigger changes in the concentration of intracellular messengers ("second messengers") which leads, in turn, to changes in cellular activity. However, the intracellular activities of so called "third messengers" may also be involved complicating the concept of a rigid sequence of events between receptor and response. The preference for the term "intracellular messengers", and, hence, the title of this volume, recognizes that a complex web of interactions between intercellular messengers determines the concentrations and ultimate effects of each.

Book excerpt: The main argument of this book is that cell signalling via nerves, hormones, local mediators and growth factors are not distinct phenomena, but branches of one general mechanism and should therefore be studied in an integrated manner. This volume is designed to act as a bridge between general texts and is aimed at biologists coming to the topic from a variety of backgrounds. The first two chapters introduce the general concepts of intracellular signalling and also cover the topic of direct cell-to-cell communication by cytoplasmic bridges (gap junctions). The remaining chapters cover the first and second messengers, starting with their structure, synthesis and release, progressing to the target cell and then working from the membrane inwards towards the nucleus. There is also a section on the mechanism of nervous conduction and the regulation of the ionic balace of cells. The final chapters discuss the regulation of cell growth and division and the special case of messengers acting via nuclear receptors.

During the last two decades, a new role for lipids has taken center stage: lipids can act as signalling molecules. This book deals with a variety of lipids that have been shown to be messengers. Leading scientists explore all known lipid classes except steroid hormones. Researchers and educators in biochemistry as well as in molecular and cellular biology will appreciate this volume.

Book excerpt: This practical compendium provides clinical scientists with an essential guide to the basic techniques of molecular medicine. It serves as a laboratory manual and a source of reference. It is suitable for those wishing to perform basic semi-quantitative experiments such as Northern or Southern blots and also those wishing to undertake more specialised genetic manipulations such as gene cloning, expression and creation of DNA libraries. It will give clinical scientists a unique insight into the potential of these techniques. As stated by Sir David Weatherall: 'It should be of great value to both established research workers and young scientists coming into the field for the first time. It deserves every success.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnology, is the manipulation of biological organisms to make products that benefit human beings. Biotechnology contributes to such diverse areas as food production, waste disposal, mining and medicine. Plant biotechnology may be defined as the art, science and application of knowledge obtained from the study of life sciences to create technological improvements and change the genetics of plants in order to produce desired characteristics in plant species. This can be accomplished through many different techniques ranging from simply selecting plants with desirable characteristics for propagation, to more complex molecular techniques. Genetic engineering deals with synthesis of artificial gene, repair of gene, combining of DNA from two organism and manipulating the artificial gene together with the recombinant DNA for the improvement of microbes in plants as well as other living being. Genetic engineering opens a totally new dimension for bioprospecting. The search for new genes and their application is the primary objective of the biotech industry. Gene technology now enable humans to integrate revolutionary new properties in to cultivated plants through inter-specific or inter-generic gene transfer which was not possible through classical approach of crop improvement. This book covers all important aspects of practical utility in field of genetic manipulation by different areas of Plant Biotechnology Techniques.

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed introduction to the cloning of both plants and animals and discusses the important social, ethical, political, technical, and other issues related to the practice. The history of cloning experiments dates back more than a century, but advances in technology in recent decades have multiplied the potential applications of cloning-and expanded the controversies surrounding these possibilities. Cloning: A Reference Handbook provides an accessible description of the development of plant and animal cloning from the early stages of human civilization to the present day and coherently covers the science and technology involved. It reviews the essential controversies that have arisen about cloning-particularly applications involving human DNA-as researchers have advanced and extended the tools for cloning organisms. Additionally, the book discusses public opinion about cloning and the legislative and administration actions that have been taken with regard to the practice. This single-volume work provides a broad treatment of the subject, going back further in history than is the case with most texts, covering plant cloning and providing a thorough overview of the nature of animal cloning and related issues. Examples of the topics covered include the natural "cloning" processes of regeneration in plants and animals; crucial research breakthroughs on animal cloning by Robert Briggs and Thomas King, John Gurdon, Gail Martin, James Till and Earnest McCulloch, and others; and the laws that regulate which types of cloning are allowed and prohibited in the United States and in other countries.
