We will find in this work, which is not deficient in original observations, a concise but complete expose of important researches upon various questions in nervous pathology by L. Tuerck, Benedikt, Meynert, and other authors of the Vienna School. Among works of this character, which are, in my opinion, too little known among us, I shall restrict myself to calling attention to those which discuss the anatomical lesions of the nervous centres in hydrophobia, the lesions of the arteries in cere bral syphilis, and, finally, the observations which have established, according to Dr. Voigt, the relations of cutaneous anaesthesia and hyperaesthesia with the distribution of the nerves to the integument. The study of foreign works upon nervous diseases has led me to pay attention to certain studies in comparative pathology, which may be applied to the investigation of the changes which morbid types of this class experience, according to climate, nationality, race, etc., but without losing their autonomy. As a rule, we are only able to point out slight shades of difference in a study of this character. But the deviation may sometimes be characterized by more or less profound modifications, even in adjacent countries and under very similar parallels of latitude. If, despite this, the author has ventured to enter the field with writers like Erb, Eulenburg, Strumpell, Seeligmuller, Mobius, and others, some responsibility must rest upon the shoulders of his publisher, who has more than once assured him that there is still room for another text-book in addition to those already in our libraries. He was influenced, too, by the hope that here and there on certain points the treatment of the subject, by varying from that ordinarily adopted, might while rendering it more easily comprehensible to the beginner make the book none the less reliable as an adviser to those of wider experience. With this end in view, we have considered the manner of dividing the subject matter to be of no small importance, and have therefore chosen to discuss the diseases of the brain, those of the spinal cord, and those of the general nervous system separately, while diseases of the peripheral nerves, cranial as well as spinal, have been fully treated of by themselves.
