True Mucin and Nucle0albumin.--These two substances have physical properties in common, react to some tests in the same manner, and thus have sometimes been confused. True mucin is derived from the intact epithelial cells lining the genitourinary tract, and may entangle cells and other material to form the nubecula. Although the secretion of mucin by the epithelium lming the genitourinary tract is small compared with that secreted by epithelium of the alimentary tract, it is generally stated to be secreted by the former. Mucin contains a carbohydrate group but no phosphorus. It is precipitated by dilute phosphoric acid, but is soluble in excess of acetic acid. Sodium chlorid keeps it in solution. Nucleoalbumin, on the other hand, _ is formed by the disintegration of the nuclei of desquamated cells and possioly by cells from other sources.
