A table Of interesting matter, composed of the most prominent places of California, and other portions Of the United States, and health resorts of Europe and Mexico, showing the mean annual temperature, mean temperature for Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, along with the highest and lowest temperature for many years. This table shows that California compares with other noted health resorts and promi nent places in a highly complimentary manner to this State. The North Winds of California, always an interesting study, have been reproduced, being from the pen of the Rev. J. H. C. Bonte, Secretary of the State University of California. An excellent report on the climate of Palestine, and more particular] Jerusalem, by Mr. Selah Merrill, United States Consul at the latter place. That climate will be found to resemble our own in a great many respects, especially at Colfax, which is nearly the same elevation as Jerusalem. It is an article that will well repay a careful perusal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of the Climate of California Upon Its Literature HE study of the literature of a T people is far more than a mere investigation into words and the manner of their arrangement. Rightly conducted, it is a probing into the inner self of the man who used the words, an investigation into his thoughts, feelings, emotions, environment, social and poli tical life, religion, aspiration. By its means, we are enabled to comprehend all that is meant by the history of a people, its civilization, its real life. In the present article I wish to con sider the influence climate has had upon the literature of California, first, by its direct and indirect influence upon men, and second, as it offers men subjects and objects for discourse. The first was generally characterized by a high - pressure ridge along the Pacific coast from October 1974 through January 1975 that resulted in subnormal precipitation for most of the State (figure The second part of the winter was characterized by an upper-level trough over the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean which brought above-normal precipitation for February and March, 1975. These two wet months more than compensated for the previous dry ones in many areas of the State and brought the seasonal total precipitation up to and above normal (figure More detailed descriptions of seasonal precipitation are presented in the Department's Bulletin No. 120-75; Water Conditions in California, Reports Nos. 1 through 4. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California of the South: Its Physical Geography, Climate, Resources, Routes of Travel, and Health-Resorts, Being a Complete Guide-Book to Southern California In the mountain-chains, also, a similarity and again a difference may be noted. Upon each coast in the southern portion a system of mountain-chains follows the shore-line at a greater or less distance inland. Upon the Atlantic side this system, the Appalachian, begins in Northern Georgia, and extends continuously through the Carolinas, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, finally disappearing in Northern Maine. It runs parallel to the coast, and at a distance of from two to three hundred miles inland. South of this line the land ceases, and the great heated body of the Gulf waters ex tends across the southern border of the continent, sending its modifying influence, borne by the Gulf winds, far inland along the open valley-way of the Mississippi. North of Central New York the chain begins to break down, leaving the country Open upon the north and west to the cold winds which sweep down from the polar seas, and from the great frozen plains which extend to the mouth of the Mackenzie. The northwesterly winds gather an increased harshness from the winter-chilled waters of the Great Lakes, across which they pass. This Appalachian system is made up of mountains of limited altitude, ranging only from two to three thousand feet in height, and broken by numerous passes and low reaches. Between these mountains and the sea lies a coast-plain, broad, continuous, fertile, watered by many rivers, and broken by no transverse range of mountains.
