Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatological Data, Missouri, Vol. 59: 1955-1956 The rains that fell during the first few days of January soaked into the unfrozen ground. The subsoil moisture, though improved, was still deficient. The creeks became replenished and stock water became adequate. Stock water diminished during the last week of the month due to only small amounts of precipitation. A fast-moving cold front crossed over the State on the forenoon of the 12th lower ing temperatures far below freezing by the following morning. The winter grains were not protected by snow cover. More hard freezes occurred from the 26th to 3oth and the wheat over most growing areas was exposed to zero temperatures. No estimates as to the damage to the crops were available. Farm work advanced during the mild beginning of the month and during the moderate second decade but little was accomplished during the final week. These showers were responsible also for several minor landslides on highways in Ohio Valley counties and also for the flooding of basements in parts of Parkersburg when the sewers backed up. Several thousand dollars property damage was caused by icy streets and roads from the 29th to the end of the month. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatological Data, Utah, Vol. 59: January, 1957 Perhaps the most significant feature of January's weather was precipitation, some times as much as three and more inches in ex cess'ofaverage, that fell over the drought stricken counties of southern Utah. Excep ting Fruita and Hanksville in Wayne County, all observing stations south of the 4oth parallel reported above average precipita tion, substantially above in most cases. The only parts of the State in which a fair number of stations reported deficient pre cipitation were the north-central and north west. Heavy snowfall built up the mountain snow pack, which in some northern areas ap peared to be about normal for the season, and brought more snow to southern portions than at any time since 1949. In southern Utah, particularly in the southeast, aver age temperatures were considerably higher than long-term mean values, while in the north they were mostly lower. Laketown and Woodruff were and colder respec tively than their long-term averages, and most stations in the northern Uinta Basin were around 4 colder. Along the western border, Garrison was and Ibapah colder than in an average January. Wind movement was below average, though strong winds were associated with a few storms, particularly with that around the 20th when gusts to 50 m.p.h. Did some minor damage to trees and property in the Salt Lake City area. Near-blizzard conditions were report ed ih a few localities, and drifting snow made traffic hazardous especially around the 20th and 26th. On the 20th, heavy snow temporarily Stranded 50 cars in the Snow' Basin area, and during part of the month snowy, icy roads were a traffic nuisance.
