Book excerpt: Oceanographic obs rvation in the sou h rn Beaufort Sea of the Arctic Ocean were conducted at Fletcher's Ice Island (T-3) between June 1959 and September 1960. An lysis of data on temperature, salinity, and chemical elements revealed five major water masses in his region: Arctic Surface Water, Upper Intermediate Water, Atlantic Water, Low Intermediate Water, and Deep Shelf Water. Intrusion of relatively warm Pacific Water along the 25.5 - 26.0 isopycnal surface at about 75 m was characteristic. The temperature structure of the deep water in the Beaufort Basin showed that there is a relatively warm water mass at depths below 880 m (Lo r Intermediate Water), which is warmer than bottom waters in the Atlantic Water occurring between he upper and lower 0 C isotherms (250 m and 880 m respectively) is characterized by positive temperatures, having a maximum of 0.45 C at about 450 m. Deep Shelf Water is found at 15 m to 40 m on the very shallow continental shelf, being characterized by relatively low temperatures and abundance of silicon. Book excerpt: Recent well documented reductions in the thickness and extent of Arctic sea ice cover, which can be linked to the warming climate, are affecting the global climate system and are also affecting the global economic system as marine access to the Arctic region and natural resource development increase. Satellite data show that during each of the past six summers, sea ice cover has shrunk to its smallest in three decades. The composition of the ice is also changing, now containing a higher fraction of thin first-year ice instead of thicker multi-year ice. Understanding and projecting future sea ice conditions is important to a growing number of stakeholders, including local populations, natural resource industries, fishing communities, commercial shippers, marine tourism operators, national security organizations, regulatory agencies, and the scientific research community. However, gaps in understanding the interactions between Arctic sea ice, oceans, and the atmosphere, along with an increasing rate of change in the nature and quantity of sea ice, is hampering accurate predictions. Although modeling has steadily improved, projections by every major modeling group failed to predict the record breaking drop in summer sea ice extent in September 2012. Establishing sustained communication between the user, modeling, and observation communities could help reveal gaps in understanding, help balance the needs and expectations of different stakeholders, and ensure that resources are allocated to address the most pressing sea ice data needs. Seasonal-to-Decadal Predictions of Arctic Sea Ice: Challenges and Strategies explores these topics.

Book excerpt: th Towards the end of the 19 century some researchers put forward the hypothesis that the Polar regions may play the key role in the shaping of the global climate. This supposition found its full confirmation in empirical and th model research conducted in the 20 century, particularly in recent decades. The intensification of the global warming after about 1975 brought into focus the physical causes of this phenomenon. The first climatic models created at that time, and the analyses of long observation series consistently showed that the Polar regions are the most sensitive to climatic changes. This aroused the interest of numerous researchers, who thought that the examination of the proc esses taking place in these regions might help to determine the mechanisms responsible for the "working" of the global climatic system. To date, a great number of publications on this issue have been published. However, as a re view of the literature shows, there is not a single monograph which comprises the basic information concerning the current state of the Arctic climate. The last study to discuss the climate of the Arctic in any depth was published in 1970 (Climates a/the Polar Regions, vol. 14, ed. S. Orvig) by the World Survey of Climatology, edited by H. E. Landsberg. This publication, however, does not provide the full climatic picture of many meteorological elements.
