Book excerpt: The climate-diagram maps contained in this volume are to serve for a quick orientation of the climate and its zonation in the various world regions, which are discussed in Volumes I-IX of this series. Some of these regional vegetation monographs are already published, others are still in preparation. The climate diagrams used in this volume are from the «Klimadiagramm-Weltatlas» by H. WALTER and H. LIETH, prepared with additional help of E. HARNICKELL (VEB Gustav-Fischer-Verlag, Jena 1960-1967). A few new climate-diagrams had to be drafted for Canada, Venezuela and Central Asia. On the maps, the individual climate-diagrams are placed, wherever possible, directly on the location of the station. However, in some cases the diagrams had to be shifted a little in order to accommodate as many as permitted by the geographic scale of the map. For coastal stations, it was best to move them onto the space provided by the ocean. Wherever diagrams were widely displaced, an arrow indicates the location of the station. The more exact location of each station is given in the «Klimadiagramm-Weltatlas», where the stations are shown with their respective number on the reverse side of each map. The number of climate-diagrams in the Atlas (approx. 8,000) is much greater than those that can be shown here. This volume is therefore not a substitute for the «Klimadiagramm-Weltatlas».

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date textbook of global vegetation ecology, which comprises the current state of knowledge, is long overdue and much-needed. It is a translation of the textbook “Vegetation der Erde” (Springer-Spektrum, Heidelberg). A short introductory chapter deals with the fundamentals of vegetation ecology that are of importance for the delimitation and characterization of the global vegetation presented in this book (chorology, evolution of plants, physiognomic and structural characteristics, phytodiversity and the human impact on it as well as general terminology concerning both plant growth forms and on vegetation structure types). In the following chapters the zonal and azonal vegetation from the tropics to the polar regions including high mountains is described and discussed. The main focus is on the characterization of interactions between the spatial location of plants and plant communities on the one hand and site conditions, historic and genetic processes, spatial and temporal patterns, ecophysiology and anthropogenic influences on the other hand. Additional information on specific topics is provided in 51 boxes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climates of the Continents A work of this kind must be essentially a compilation from such materials as statistics, more or less adequate, maps showing certain factors of climate, and regional descriptions; the result is largely dependent on the nature of the original sources. A glance at the following pages will show that no uniformity of treatment has been achieved or even attempted. The principle followed has been to present the main features of the climate of each region considered especially in relation to the greater units of the globe. It is' clearly impossible to give any detailed local descriptions in a book of this scope. But it is hoped that the general account may constitute a framework into which detailed local descriptions may be intelligently fitted, a convenient skeleton to carry the details necessary for the special purposes of the meteorologist, the botanist, the zoologist, and the geographer. As it seemed desirable to make each chapter as far as possible complete in itself, repetition has been in some places inevitable. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, climate-related processes and problems are referred to as Global Change by nearly everyone including scientists, politicians, and economists; citizens worldwide are anxious about the often ob served disorientation of our environment under the influence of man. Better information on the Earth's natural systems and their possible alterations is necessary. The topic itself is so wide that sound scien tific descriptions of it as a whole are rare. For the non-specialist infor mation from relevant fields is not easy to obtain; and often, the pro gnostic models presented are contradictory and even for specialists difficult to evaluate. Therefore, this book on Climate, Earth Processes and Earth History by Richard Huggett fills an important gap. It discusses the great, climate-related areas of the Earth's environment. The atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the sediments as products of weathering and geomorphic processes, the relief as landforms and soils, and the biosphere are thoroughly treated as the prominent sub systems which are greatly affected by climate. These subsystems not only control the visual and internal aspects of our landscapes, but they are themselves especially influenced by climatic changes which can be due to either changes in the natural system or anthropogenic changes. Thus, our landscapes will be subject to significant altera tions, if climatic variations exceed certain thresholds. The plan for the present book by Richard Huggett was originally discussed in regard to the Springer Series on Physical Environment.
