Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people equate Los Angeles with smog, sprawl, forty suburbs in search of a city-the great "what-not-to-do" of twentieth-century city building. But there's much more to LA's story than this shallow stereotype. History shows that Los Angeles was intensely, ubiquitously planned. The consequences of that planning-the environmental history of urbanism—is one place to turn for the more complex lessons LA has to offer. Working forward from ancient times and ancient ecologies to the very recent past, Land of Sunshine is a fascinating exploration of the environmental history of greater Los Angeles. Rather than rehearsing a litany of errors or insults against nature, rather than decrying the lost opportunities of "roads not taken," these essays, by nineteen leading geologists, ecologists, and historians, instead consider the changing dynamics both of the city and of nature. In the nineteenth century, for example, "density" was considered an evil, and reformers struggled mightily to move the working poor out to areas where better sanitation and flowers and parks "made life seem worth the living." We now call that vision "sprawl," and we struggle just as much to bring middle-class people back into the core of American cities. There's nothing natural, or inevitable, about such turns of events. It's only by paying very close attention to the ways metropolitan nature has been constructed and construed that meaningful lessons can be drawn. History matters. So here are the plants and animals of the Los Angeles basin, its rivers and watersheds. Here are the landscapes of fact and fantasy, the historical actors, events, and circumstances that have proved transformative over and over again. The result is a nuanced and rich portrait of Los Angeles that will serve planners, communities, and environmentalists as they look to the past for clues, if not blueprints, for enhancing the quality and viability of cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California is synonymous with opportunity, prosperity, and natural beauty, but climate change will certainly influence the state’s future. Changes will affect the economy, natural resources, public health, agriculture, and the livelihoods of its residents. But how big is the risk? How will Californians adapt? What will it cost? This book is the first to ask and attempt to answer these and other questions so central to the long-term health of the state. While California is undeniably unique and diverse, the challenges it faces will be mirrored everywhere. This succinct and authoritative review of the latest evidence suggests feasible changes that can sustain prosperity, mitigate adverse impacts of climate change, and stimulate research and policy dialog across the globe. The authors argue that the sooner society recognizes the reality of climate change risk, the more effectively we can begin adaptation to limit costs to present and future generations. They show that climate risk presents a new opportunity for innovation, supporting aspirations for prosperity in a lower carbon, climate altered future where we can continue economic progress without endangering the environment and ourselves.

Book excerpt: This book shows how California’s weather and climate have drastically changed and what we can expect in the near future. California’s weather and climate are becoming as common a topic in the media as inflation and wars. It comes into our lives during heat waves when we require more cooling and during droughts when we are asked to limit our use of water. We may not be able to visit state and national parks when fires rage nearby. Indeed, California does have weather. LaDochy and Witiw dispel the erroneous myths about the state’s climate in a colorful, entertaining way. California does have seasons. It does rain in Southern California. It is not always sunny and mild throughout the year. And not all El Niños bring abundant rainfall every time throughout the state. These and other myths are discussed and dismissed with the latest science and remarkable vignettes. The authors describe the diversity of the state’s physical environment, both natural and man-made and how climate change is currently altering this diverse environment. Climate change, in the past, present and future, continues to influence this most populous state. Yes, California does have weather.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California's extraordinary ecological and economic diversity has brought it prosperity, pollution, and overpopulation. These factors, together with the state's national and international ties, make California an essential test case for the impact of global climate change - temperature increases, water shortages, more ultraviolet radiation. Ecological and economic changes that affect California's widely envied individualistic culture will have far-flung repercussions. Global climate change became a worldwide concern during the late 1980s as scientists debated the implications of observed ozone depletion and "greenhouse gas" concentrations, or projected us into the twenty-first century by means of complex computer simulations. Even though many questions remain unanswered, the scientific community is largely convinced that changes - possibly momentous - in the earth's climate are now underway. In this forward-looking volume some highly qualified scientists give their best estimate of what the future holds. Beginning with an overview by Joseph Knox, the authors discuss the greenhouse effect, the latest climate modeling capabilities, and the implications of climate change for California water resources, agriculture, biological ecosystems, human behavior, and energy. The warning inherent in a scenario of unchecked population growth and energy use in California clearly applies to residents of the entire planet. The sobering conclusions reached by these scientists include specific recommendations for research that will help all of us plan and prepare for potential climate change.

From reviewing the effects of sea rise, droughts, and increased disease there will be an increase of global conflict for natural resources. This study reviews the growing threats to the electric vehicle and renewable resources industry by examining what factors attribute to public perception in the city of Los Angeles. As the Earth’s CO2 emission are higher than ever and increasing, this paper identifies how the public’s perception of politics, cost, legislation, safety, jobs and charging infrastructure attribute to whether renewable resources are favorably regarded. By researching what resources and incentives are necessary to help the city of Los Angeles transition to eighty percent renewable consumption by 2050 to help clean its air quality.

Book excerpt: Climate assessment activities are increasingly driven by subnational organizationsâ€"city, county, and state governments; utilities and private companies; and stakeholder groups and engaged publicsâ€"trying to better serve their constituents, customers, and members by understanding and preparing for how climate change will impact them locally. Whether the threats are drought and wildfires, storm surge and sea level rise, or heat waves and urban heat islands, the warming climate is affecting people and communities across the country. To explore the growing role of subnational climate assessments and action, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the 2-day workshop on August 14-15, 2018. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
