Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleveland and Its Streetcars takes the reader back to when railway cars dominated the local street scene. The book focuses on the era of 1910-1954, from the time that Cleveland Railway Company took over operation of the consolidated streetcar lines to the day that the last streetcar rumbled over the city's streets. Cleveland's trailer trains, articulated cars, and its Peter Witt car model were widely admired by the nation, and the streetcar reigned supreme through the end of World War II. In 1942, the Cleveland Transit System (CTS) took over the streetcar lines, and eager to "modernize" its fleet, it decided to replace the streetcars with buses, trackless trolleys, and a crosstown rapid transit line. After the end of the war, in May 1945, the first post-war conversion took place. Then the pace of replacing the streetcars with rubber-tired vehicles quickened. By 1954, the task was complete. This book, with over 200 photographs, documents this changing Cleveland scene--when a wonderful era in transportation flourished and then, sadly, disappeared.

Book excerpt: "Although long lost in the mists of civic amnesia, the Great Cleveland Streetcar Strike was the greatest civil upheaval in the city's history, both in terms of its duration and for the proportion of its citizens involved in mass participation law-breaking. On one side: the Cleveland Electric Railway Company ("The Big Con"), led by tough traction magnate Henry Everett and backed by a force of over half a thousand armed strikebreakers, hired detectives, the Cleveland police force and the state militia. On the other: the Big Con's 800 newly unionized conductors and motorman and tens of thousands of Clevelanders sympathetic to the strikers and willing to commit violence on their behalf. To the Bitter End is the story of their epic combat as it was fought out in the city streets through the summer and fall of 1899. An amazing tale of oppression and mayhem, ruthlessness and loss, the Great Streetcar Strike was a working-class insurrection that touched the lives of all Clevelanders at the turn of the 20th century and continues to reverberate today."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A hobbyist’s enthusiasm, curiosity, and attention to detail exude from this technological history of Ohio’s streetcar industry . . . Highly recommended.” —Choice At the beginning of the twentieth century, the street railway industry was one of the largest in the nation. Once ubiquitously visible on the city streets, by mid-century the streetcar was nothing more than a distant memory. Ohio was home to several large streetcar systems, especially in Cleveland and Cincinnati, and had more interurban tracks than any other state in the union. Thus, Ohio served as one of the street railway industry’s greatest centers of manufacturing. Built to Move Millions examines the manufacture of streetcars and interurbans within the state of Ohio between 1900 and 1940. In addition to discussing the five major car builders that were active in Ohio during this period, the book addresses Ohio companies that manufactured the various components that went into these vehicles. Includes extensive photos

Within these stately mansions, US presidents enjoyed dinners and discussions with powerful politicians and influential industrial and banking leaders. Through photographs and meticulously researched captions, Cleveland's Millionaires' Row provides authoritative visual and written answers to the most often-asked questions regarding the famous avenue: where were these mansions located, how did their occupants acquire such enormous wealth, what caused the street's demise, and what replaced the famous old homes? The book also reveals the progress in remaking Euclid Avenue's four-mile stretch from Public Square to University Circle. Cleveland's Millionaires' Row vividly illustrates the birth, glamor, decline, and renaissance of the grand old avenue.
