Book excerpt: Cleburne County is strategically located between the two major cities of Birmingham and Atlanta. Once a part of Benton County, Cleburne County was officially created in 1866 by the Alabama legislature and named in honor of Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne, who served the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Talladega National Forest covers the western half of the county and includes Mount Cheaha, the highest point in the state. Cleburne County gained national notoriety in the 1840s when gold was discovered around Arbacoochee, which became one of the largest mining towns in the state. Over $5 million in gold was mined there. In the early 1900s, the area's mild climate and rich soil drew several hundred settlers from northern states who came to Cleburne County and established a wine-producing colony, Fruithurst, which produced as much as 23,000 gallons per year.

Cleburne County and Its Peoplehas drawn from the past and the present--chronicling the lives of settlers facing hardships and tragedies, discovering profound beauty, mastering vast natural resources, and formulating democratic ideals. The stories in this book are honest interpretations of the human experience intertwined with the old and the new and adding exciting dimensions to the county of Cleburne and the state of Arkansas. The objective of Carl J. Barger, the compiler of Cleburne County and Its People, is to preserve a history of the county of his birth for students, historians, and all of the citizens of Cleburne County. Carl J. Book excerpt: Chambers County, created in 1832, embraces the southernmost hills and streams of the Piedmont Plateau and sections of the Chattahoochee River to the east and the Tallapoosa River to the west. Cotton cultivation and textile manufacturing propelled the trajectory of the first 150 years in the county. Images of America: Chambers County presents an array of images of places and people who began life on the frontier, created local government, experienced Native American uprising, served in the Civil War and two world wars, cultivated thousands of productive acres with ox and mule, organized towns, constructed railroads, and built one of the nation's largest textile operations. This bounty of photographs, most of which was provided from family collections, furthers an understanding of the unique story of Chambers County in the ongoing development of the American experience.
