Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world has witnessed several revolutions since the dawn of industrial revolution some two centuries ago. During the current century itself, three revolutions in the area of communication, information processing and quality have taken place and each time the standard of living of man improved beyond predictions. But during the same period, the world population has also phenomenally increased dwarfing the gains achieved from the development. Increased level of industrial activity to meet the of humanity has caused irreversible damage to the pristine environment that the demand Earth once had. Economic disparity between the haves and havenots has widened, aggravating the situation further more. Ozone layer depletion, warming up of Earth's atmosphere and the pollution created by uncontrolled industrial activity to gain economic strength are now assuming the proportion of a catastrophe that may eventually threaten the survival of life on Earth. Developed countries blame the Third World countries for the uncontrolled emissions through burning of fossil fuels and for wasting precious resources of energy by using inefficient and uneconomical technologies, while the developed countries are equally responsible for avoidable oV,er-consumption and for the wastage of resources and energy and for not sharing the improved and efficient technologies with the developing countries. Thus the wastage by both these set of countries continues unabated. After all, resources of the world are finite and are meant to be shared by all its inhabitants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clean technology does not just aim to dilute or detoxify industrial waste. It aims to eliminate it by re-engineering the entire production cycle. As industry is constrained by regulations on the one hand and consumer pressure on the other, energy-efficient, resource-efficient and pollution-free production becomes imperative. It will be the next stage of industrial development. Using extensive empirical analysis of a range of different industrial sectors, this book shows how cleaner technology can be implemented, above all by the companies themselves. It looks at regulatory initiatives and focuses on how firms themselves can introduce the new technologies, systems and polices required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Industrial Design and Waste Management was inspired by the need to have a text that enveloped awareness and solutions to the ongoing issues and concerns of waste generated from industry. The development of science and technology has increased human capacity to extract resources from nature and it is only recently that industries are being held accountable for the detrimental effects the waste they produce has on the environment. Increased governmental research, regulation and corporate accountability are digging up issues pertaining to pollution control and waste treatment and environmental protection. The traditional approach for clinical waste, agricultural waste, industrial waste, and municipal waste are depleting our natural resources. The main objective of this book is to conserve the natural resources by approaching 100 % full utilization of all types of wastes by cradle – to - cradle concepts, using Industrial Ecology methodology documented with case studies. Sustainable development and environmental protection cannot be achieved without establishing the concept of industrial ecology. The main tools necessary for establishing Industrial Ecology and sustainable development will be covered in the book. The concept of “industrial ecology will help the industrial system to be managed and operated more or less like a natural ecosystem hence causing as less damage as possible to the surrounding environment. Numerous case studies allow the reader to adapt concepts according to personal interest/field Reveals innovative technologies for the conservation of natural resources The only book which provides an integrated approach for sustainable development including tools, methodology, and indicators for sustainable development

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book represents a journey documenting the development of tools and methodologies over 3 decades and asks where the future lies. It further develops seminal work carried out under the auspices of the Capacity building in Sustainability and Environmental Management (CapSEM) project co-funded by the EU Erasmus programme from 2016-2019 as well as research projects such as IGLO-MP2020, SUSPRO, and SISVI. It gathers existing paradigms of environmental management within the relevant frameworks which have driven the way in which this discipline has developed. It seeks to both challenge and support the way in which business sectors have approached this previously, with a more holistic and overarching model being provided, moving through four very distinct levels. It therefore provides not only a different approach, but a different way of thinking. Systems thinking is characterized by four levels: Process, Product Value Chain, Organisational and Systemic which combines Material Flow Analysis (MFA), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Industrial Ecology (IE) principles. In its practical application, Corporate Social Responsibility, for example, thus becomes an integral part of a much wider business strategy and impacts on all business activity, not added value for its own sake, but a valuable component in a wider toolbox as a fundamental part of any business strategy and plan, changing, flexing and developing over the years. The book is divided into 4 parts: moving from context and background, to the theoretical model or toolbox, onto its practical application in case studies and culminates in looking at the future and potential developments. It represents the multi-disciplined collaboration at NTNU and beyond, exemplifying its use in a wealth of business sectors and a range of stakeholders from construction to textiles to wind power as outlined in the European Circular Action Plan.

Abstract: During the past two decades the impacts of industrial activities on the environment have become a prominent issues in debates on economic development. Nowadays, Companies are confronted with high expectations in terms of environmental protection. This thesis focuses on the concept of pollution prevention, which underlies most environmental strategies. Many companies, however, have not yet implemented pollution prevention. In this thesis pollution prevention is primarily evaluated from the perspective of such firms. As a starting point a short overview of terms and concepts in the pollution prevention area is given. Book excerpt: First published in 1999 , the book is based on papers given at the final workshop of a research project into the evolution of environmental regulation in Poland undertaken as part of the UKs ERSC Global Environmental Change Programme. Other invited papers focused on the development of regulatory policy in transforming economies and in the UK. Furthermore the book highlights the weakness of internal political processes in Poland and the important role played by foreign sponsored pressures whilst exsamaning the divergence between the way environmental charges are supposed to operate and the ways in which they are implemented and enforced. Topics covered include the links between privatisation and the environment, the saline water problem in Upper Silesia, enforcement of and compliance with environmental charges, air pollution in Krakow and the structure of the Polish environmental administration system.
