Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clays and Clay Products This volume, like the others in this series, does not aim at exhausting the subject with which it deals. On the contrary, its chief aim is to give the commercial man sufficient insight into the nature of the various materials and products described for him to realise, in broad outline, the processes involved in their treatment and the extent to which they may be used for the purposes of his own business. Few people, except those who are actually engaged in the manufacture of clay products, have any idea of the wide ramifications of the industries connected therewith, yet, if clay products were suddenly removed and became irreplaceable, the loss among both primitive and civilised peoples would be incredibly great. Vast and important as is the Iron and Steel industry, it is in many ways only secondary to the trades connected with clays and clay-products;indeed, without the latter, the very production of iron would become practically impossible, architecture would, in many districts, be stifled, and the most evident signs of civilisation would be absent. To know something of the industries connected with so important a subject should form part of the education of every commercial and business man, and it is for such that this volume has primarily been written. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concluding the trilogy on geological materials in construction, this authoritative volume reviews many uses of clays, ranging from simple fills to sophisticated products. Comprehensive and international coverage is achieved by an expert team, including geologists, engineers and architects. Packed with information prepared for a wide readership, this unique handbook is also copiously illustrated. The volume is dedicated to the memory of Professor Sir Alec Skempton. Various definitions of 'clay' are explored. Clay mineralogy is described, plus the geological formation of clay deposits and their fundamental materials properties. World and British clay deposits are reviewed and explained. New compositional data are provided for clay formations throughout the stratigraphic column. Investigative techniques and interpretation are considered, ranging from site exploration to laboratory assessment of composition and engineering performance. Major civil engineering applications are addressed, including earthworks, earthmoving and specialized roles utilizing clays. Traditional earthen building is included and shown to dominate construction in places. Clay-based construction materials are detailed, including bricks, ceramics and cements. The volume also includes a comprehensive glossary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural clay products have had a place in the history of civilization like bread and cloth. Probably because the industry has been so commonplace in the lives of people, 1ittle has been written about it; even the history of its development is sketchy. There is no other book quite like this in publication at present, and it is prompted now because much general scientific knowledge can be, and is, applied to the manufacture of structural clay products. This book is an attempt to bring together in one place the basic sciences that can be useful in all of the processes and experiences of the clayworker. This volume was written primarily as a text to be used in courses for third and fourth year college students; however, there will be a broader interest in it by industrial foremen, engineers, architects, and scientists employed in the manu facture, research and use of structural clay products. It will also be a source of general information for those interested in entering the field. The treatment of the basic principles of clay products manufacturing and use is so general that even those interested in refractories, whitewares, and pottery may find many parts useful to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to provide a comprehensive and coherent description of three widely separated aspects of clays: the science of clays; the industrial uses of clays; and the role of clays in the environment. Most of the existing literature lacks such an integrated study and this work endeavours to fill that gap. An exhaustive account of the science of clays is presented in Part I of the book, which includes the classification, origin and evolution, composition and internal structure, chemical and physical properties of clays; soil mechanics; and analytical techniques for determining clay constituents. Part II provides a comprehensive description of the applications of clays and their derivatives in various industries, while Part III describes the role of clays in the environment; the pollution caused by clay minerals; and the application of clays in order to prevent environmental hazards. A principal feature of the book is its explanation of how the structure and composition of particular clay types facilitate their specific industrial or environmental applications, thus describing the interrelationship between three widely varying aspects of clay. A number of thought-provoking questions are raised at the end of the work in order to leave readers with a better insight in this regard.

Book excerpt: Bringing together information widely distributed throughout scientific and industrial journals, here is an overview of the chemical consititution and properties of clay minerals and the environmental conditions that lead to their formation. Provides a detailed picture of the chemical consititution of the eight main groups of clay minerals containing silica and of the non-siliceous oxide clays. The central section of the book deals with the properties of clays: their colloidal behavior, cation exchange, interaction with water, reactions on heating, catalytic properties, and reactions with organic compounds. Also discusses the chemical conditions that favor the formation of clays and their evolution or decomposition into other materials.

This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...
