Book excerpt: Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.
Book Synopsis A Sound Like Water Dripping by : Soren Bondrup-Nielsen
Download or read book A Sound Like Water Dripping written by Soren Bondrup-Nielsen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With enthusiasm and sincerity biologist Soren Bondrup-Nielsen recalls his experience as a graduate student in the 1970s researching the Boreal Owl in northern Ontario and Alberta. After receiving his BSc in the spring of 1974, Bondrup-Nielsen travels by train to Kapuskasing to begin his study of this tiny, elusive species, cousin to the Tengmalm's Owl of Scandinavia. Though initially dissuaded by his supervisor, the author sets about recording the owl's call and locating individual territories. On cross-country skis, pulling a toboggan of supplies, Bondrup-Nielsen begins his first field season with reason for optimism, recording two distinct calls and being struck in the head by a male Boreal within his first week. After repairing to the nearby logging camp (Camp 86) where the food is plentiful and the beds much warmer than his tent, Bondrup-Nielsen continues his research to the great amusement of the cutting crew and camp staff. Taking the first photos of the owls, learning to differentiate between male and female calls, and observing mating behaviour, he finishes the season having located ten males on territories. In subsequent field seasons, Bondrup-Nielsen completes his graduate research. The book details his experimental tracking and recording methods, including telemetry, homemade traps, and a recording device fashioned out of an alarm clock, some tinfoil and a sewing needle. Bondrup-Nielsen's inquiring mind and passion for both winter and the outdoors bring an infectious sense of adventure to his fieldwork. His studies are punctuated by close encounters with coyotes, bears and a moose, glimpses of the Aurora Borealis, first love and self-discovery. With some of the author's original journal entries, notes and sketches, A Sound Like Water Dripping captures the beginning of what continues to be a committed and inspiring dedication to the study of ecology. "Owls seem to hold a fascination for just about everyone," says Bondrup-Nielsen. "Maybe it's their appearance: We see ourselves reflected in their faces. Their beaks resemble our noses and their big eyes, similar to ours, look forward, with eyelids that close from above, unlike other birds whose eyelids close from below. They seem to represent wisdom rather than reminding us of the fierce predators that they are. Owls also have ghost-like qualities, flying on silent wings, active mainly at night. In some cultures, owls are harbingers of death. In any case, there's something magical about them. I studied the Boreal Owl in northern Ontario and Alberta from 1974 to 1976, and am still approached by naturalist societies with invitations to talk about this small northern owl so few people have ever seen. In my teaching, as well, when I get a chance to talk about my research on owls the whole class listens intently. Thus, after I had finished my first book, Winter on Diamond, I felt a longing for the solitary but exciting experience of disappearing into my head again, this time to relive my discovery of the Boreal Owl."
Download or read book Winter Nature written by Merritt Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though often associated with hibernation-for bears and humans alike-winter can in fact be a time of observation and discovery in the outdoors. Winter Nature provides the interested walker, skier or snowshoer with a guide to the mammals, birds, trees and shrubs found in the Maritime provinces during the winter months. With an overview on temperature, sunlight, snowfall and seasonal adaptations, notes toward identification, and tips for differentiating between similar species, biologists and nature enthusiasts Merritt Gibson and Soren Bondrup-Nielsen share their passion for the outdoors and the biodiversity of the Maritime region. With a section on mammal tracks, suggestions for creating and stocking birdfeeders, and an introduction to plant structure, Winter Nature combines Maritime natural history, environmental awareness and outdoor education. The book also includes suggestions for winter activities, as well as a list of reference guides and an index for easy navigation of each species group. Each species entry is accompanied by an original ink drawing by Nova Scotia artist Twila Robar-DeCoste. "During the winter of 1998 I lived in a cabin near the Hardanger Glacier in Norway," says Bondrup-Nielsen. "Every day I would go skiing and then write. I wrote about winter ecology and about my own adventures and encounters with winter primarily in northern Canada. The account of these adventures became my first book, Winter on Diamond." Gibson adds: "I was an enthusiastic cross-country skier, going skiing many evenings after work and taking much longer trips on weekends. I published the first edition of Winter Nature Notes (Lancelot Press) in 1980 as a guide for use by cross-country skiers in Nova Scotia. The book was well received." A few years ago the two met on Gibson's daily walk past Bondrup-Nielsen's house. Gibson mentioned that he wanted to revise Winter Nature Notes and that perhaps Bondrup-Nielsen could work on the mammal section and add some new information on winter ecology as introductory material to the various sections. Over the next while the two worked on revising and adding material to the original book, with additional information on the interesting adaptations by animals and plants for surviving winter. This new edition is intended for use by all Maritimers who enjoy the outdoors in winter.
Book Synopsis Greenhouse Gas Emissions - Fluxes and Processes by : A. Tremblay
Download or read book Greenhouse Gas Emissions - Fluxes and Processes written by A. Tremblay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time when an unquestionable link between anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and climatic changes has finally been acknowledged and * widely documented through IPCC reports, the need for precise estimates of greenhouse gas (GHG) production rates and emissions from natural as well as managed ecosystems has risen to a critical level. Future agreements between nations concerning the reduction of their GHG emissions will - pend upon precise estimates of the present level of these emissions in both natural and managed terrestrial and aquatic environments. From this viewpoint, the present volume should prove to a benchmark contribution because it provides very carefully assessed values for GHG emissions or exchanges between critical climatic zones in aquatic en- ronments and the atmosphere. It also provides unique information on the biases of different measurement methods that may account for some of the contradictory results that have been published recently in the literature on this subject. Not only has a large array of current measurement methods been tested concurrently here, but a few new approaches have also been developed, notably laser measurements of atmospheric CO concentration 2 gradients. Another highly useful feature of this book is the addition of - nitoring and process studies as well as modeling.
Book Synopsis Research on Chrysomelidae 4 by : Pierre Jolivet
Download or read book Research on Chrysomelidae 4 written by Pierre Jolivet and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mode of life of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) might appear less interesting, as compared to free and fast roaming and hunting ground beetles (Carabidae), eusocial bees (Apidae), or so many other behaviourally fascinating insects. Chrysomelids generally hatch from eggs, which are typically laid onto their food plants. Larvae eat, moult, and pupate on or very close to these plants. Following emergence as adults reproduction often proceeds without complex courting and, in most cases, without eating much or moving for longer distances. All of this is quite insect-like and seemingly pedestrian. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of host plant selection, the wide range of defensive devices, the multifariousness of shapes and the gaudiness of colours of their body ? to name just a few phenomena of their biology ? continuously fascinate quite a number of scientists, let aside many other beetle enthusiasts. Every four years, in connection with the International Congresses of Entomology, an informal group of leaf beetle workers meets for an International Symposium on the Chrysomelidae. Last time, we met on August 23, 2012, in Daegu, South Korea for the 24th International Congress of Entomology. Of the seven papers therein presented, four are, in extended and elaborated versions, published in the present volume. Three more papers on Chrysomelidae have been submitted independently and are included here as well. The present volume 4 of the series Research on Chrysomelidae is the second published as a special issue of ZooKeys. Publishing with Pensoft?s ZooKeys is not only fast and affordable, but also allows the inclusion of colour illustrations ad libitum, in both the printed and digital versions, so that the authors can easily share their excitement on their scientific objects with their readers. We, the editors, are glad to present this volume and hope that it will be valued not only for its scientific value but also attract the attention of non-chrysomelidologists to the fascinating world of leaf beetles. Hopefully, many such volumes will follow, so that our series will develop into an attractive forum for sharing news about a scientifically interesting, economically important, and emotionally rewarding group of insects.

Download or read book Memoirs of an Egotist written by Stendhal and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2021-03-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the memoirs of Stendahl or in his own words the 'chatter about his private life' between 1821 and 1830. It was between these dates that he moved to Paris and here looks back on his life as an eccentric bachelor. 'As well as Beyle the clairvoyant self-investigator, the sardonic analyst of Parisian salon society and deliberate cultivator of wit, here emerges Beyle the despairing lover, the shakespearean enthusiast, whose romantic sentiment run always parallel with his eighteenth-century logic'. Marie-Henri Beyle - better-known by his pen name, Stendhal - was born in Grenoble, France in 1783. He turned to writing after the final defeat of Napoleon in 1815, notable works include A Life of Rossini (1824), A Life of Napoleon (1929) and The Red and the Black published in 1830. A number of works were published posthumously, including Lamiel (1889), Memoirs of an Egotist (1892) and Lucien Leuwen (1894). Stendhal is now regarded as one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of literary realism.
