Book Synopsis Children and Television by : Brian Simpson
Download or read book Children and Television written by Brian Simpson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television is often cited as a cause of violent crime or behaviour. Usually, this connection is made in the context of the behaviour of young people - as another way of blaming them for the broader ills of society. It is rare, however, for even a single reference to television to be included in the index of reports on juvenile crime. Television, it seems, is presented as an increasingly influential force in society, even though there has been scant discussion on how it really influences the behaviour of young people. Brian Simpson seeks to redress the balance and investigates why television has become a welcome scape-goat.
Download or read book Bloodbath written by Patricia Edgar and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patricia Edgar has been named one of the ten most influential people in the development of Australian television production. Her candid memoir offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the television industry and its politics. It also tells her own story-of how a young girl from Mildura became a leading innovator in Australian children's television production, and a voice to be reckoned with in a tough business. As a regulator and policy maker, Dr Edgar's take-no-prisoners style won her great fans and made her bitter enemies. Dr Edgar was the first woman appointed to the Australian Broadcasting Control Board. For ten years she fought for more locally produced, first-release children's drama on Australian television. In the early 1980s she helped establish the Australian Children's Television Foundation, creating some of the most celebrated television ever produced for Australian children, including the Round the Twist series, which sold into more than 100 countries. During her twenty-year tenure, the ACTF won multiple awards including a coveted Emmy and made co-productions with the BBC, Disney and Revcom. Along the way, Dr Edgar worked with a host of notable Australians, including Janet and Robert Holmes O Court, Bruce Gyngell, Hazel Hawke, Phillip Adams, Gulumbu Yunupingu and her brothers Galarrwuy and Mandawuy, Steve Vizard, Hilary McPhee and Paul Jennings. Bloodbath sets its author's triumphs and setbacks in the television industry into the wider perspective of political and economic change, the forces of consumerism and the global marketplace. This memoir reveals Dr Edgar as she really is-a sensitive, thoughtful, determined woman, still working to make the media environment one of quality not pap and a force for learning as well as entertainment. Bloodbath is a must-read for every Australian in the media industry, every parent raising a child, every woman who ever strove for career success, and anyone interested in how leadership works.

Download or read book Media Law in Australia written by Lesley Hitchens and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this analysis of media law in Australia surveys the massively altered and enlarged legal landscape traditionally encompassed in laws pertaining to freedom of expression and regulation of communications. Everywhere, a shift from mass media to mass self-communication has put enormous pressure on traditional law models. An introduction describing the main actors and salient aspects of media markets is followed by in-depth analyses of print media, radio and television broadcasting, the Internet, commercial communications, political advertising, concentration in media markets, and media regulation. Among the topics that arise for discussion are privacy, cultural policy, protection of minors, competition policy, access to digital gateways, protection of journalists’ sources, standardization and interoperability, and liability of intermediaries. Relevant case law is considered throughout, as are various ethical codes. A clear, comprehensive overview of media legislation, case law, and doctrine, presented from the practitioner’s point of view, this book is a valuable time-saving resource for all concerned with media and communication freedom. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Australia will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative media law.

Book Synopsis Public Broadcasting and European Law by : Irini Katsirea
Download or read book Public Broadcasting and European Law written by Irini Katsirea and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although EU Member States share a tradition of regulating public broadcasting for the public interest, such regulation has been in decline in recent years. It has been challenged by the emergence of commercial television sworn to the market logic, as well as by satellite services and the Internet. EU law and policy has, under pressure from powerful global forces, abetted that decline. The question thus arises: Do cultural values still matter in European national broadcasting? This important book examines the challenges posed to public service obligations by European Union media law and policy. An in-depth analysis of the extent to which six countries (France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom) regulate broadcasting for the public interest reveals a range of vulnerability to national political pressures or, alternatively, to the ideology of market sovereignty. The author examines the country of origin principle and the European quota rule of the Television without Frontiers Directive, revealing the influence of European law on the definition and enforcement of programme requirements, and shows how the case law of the European Court of Justice encourages deregulation at the national level without offering adequate safeguards at the supranational level in exchange. She asks the question whether the alleged 'European audiovisual model' actually persists--that is, whether broadcasting is still committed to protecting such values as cultural diversity, the safety of minors, the susceptibility of consumers to advertising, media pluralism, and the fight against racial and religious hatred. The book concludes with an evaluation of the impact of the EU state aid regime on the licence fee based financing of public broadcasting. Despite the increasing importance of the subject, its study in a comparative context has been heretofore underdeveloped. This book fully provides that context and more, and will be of great value and interest to all parties concerned with the key role of communications in the development of European integration.
Book Synopsis The V-chip Debate by : Monroe E. Price
Download or read book The V-chip Debate written by Monroe E. Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The V-chip is a highly significant part of the discussion about whether television (or broadcasting in general) deserves some special attention in terms of its accessibility to children, its particular power to affect conduct, and its invasiveness. But as this notion of filtering and labeling has caught the imagination of the regulator, the legislator, and all those who wish to consider new ways to alter bargaining over imagery in society, the very idea of the V-chip or its equivalent is moving across other technologies, including the Internet. The V-chip issue has also fueled the ongoing debate about violence and sexual practices in society, and how representations on television relate to those practices. Although the initial concept of the V-chip is simple, its flow into the public realm raises so many extraordinary questions that the introduction and production of the chip virtually serves as a case study in problems of law and public policy. The very conceptualization of speech in society is being affected by this issue. Accordingly, the place of the V-chip in this debate is increasingly important; indeed, it may be argued that the V-chip's contribution to legal argumentation may be greater than its ultimate contribution to the relationship between children and imagery. Among the questions the contributors address are: *What research basis is necessary to require a framework for labeling and rating? *What relationship between government and the image-producing industries can be characterized--for constitutional and other reasons--as voluntary as opposed to coercive? *Who should evaluate these images? *To what extent should the evaluation process be centralized and/or distributed? *What assessment is appropriate to evaluate whether the experiment is "successful?" In addition to the V-chip's origin's in Canada and its further evolution in the United States, this book discusses the development of the V-chip and television rating systems in Europe, Australia, and throughout the world. It also includes essays which contrast the very different approaches in Canada and the United States in terms of the role of regulatory agency, industry, and government.
