Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley about eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823. Shelley had travelled through Europe in 1814, journeying along the river Rhine in Germany with a stop in Gernsheim which is just 17 km (10 mi) away from Frankenstein Castle, where two centuries before an alchemist was engaged in experiments. Later, she traveled in the region of Geneva (Switzerland)-where much of the story takes place-and the topics of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her lover and future husband, Percy Shelley. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron, and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for days, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made; her dream later evolved into the story within the novel. Frankenstein is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement and is also considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. Brian Aldiss has argued that it should be considered the first true science fiction story, because unlike in previous stories with fantastical elements resembling those of later science fiction, the central character "makes a deliberate decision" and "turns to modern experiments in the laboratory" to achieve fantastic results. It has had a considerable influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories, films, and plays. Since publication of the novel, the name "Frankenstein" is often used to refer to the monster itself.

Book excerpt: 200 years after it was first published, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein has stood the test of time as a gothic masterpiece--a classic work of humanity and horror that blurs the line between man and monster... The story of Victor Frankenstein and the monstrous creature he created has held readers spellbound ever since it was published two centuries ago. On the surface, it is a novel of tense and steadily mounting horror; but on a more profound level, it offers searching illumination of the human condition in its portrayal of a scientist who oversteps the bounds of conscience, and of a monster brought to life in an alien world, ever more desperately attempting to escape the torture of his solitude. A novel of hallucinatory intensity, Frankenstein represents one of the most striking flowerings of the Romantic imagination. Book excerpt: Brilliant young scientist Victor Frankenstein’s drive to create life leads him to animate a creature assembled from the bodies of the dead. Horrified at the result, Frankenstein flees. Alone, it learns of its ghastly nature and dreams of how it might find some kind of happiness. Seeking out Frankenstein, the creature offers a terrible ultimatum, create for it a companion or suffer its merciless revenge. Since its first publication in 1818 Frankenstein has become a literary classic and a celebrated fixture of pop culture. Filmed repeatedly and generating dozens of sequels both in print and on screen, Mary Shelley’s novel still stands alone as a source of chilling thrills and macabre atmosphere while continuing to generate fresh insights and interpretations. Frankenstein, the man of science unprepared for what he has created, and his creation, a misbegotten innocent turned to the dark side by rejection and loneliness, are unforgettable characters with ageless appeal. Their conflict, and their strange bond, leads them from Germany to England and finally to a tragic climax far into the frozen North. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Frankenstein is both modern and readable.

Book excerpt: Frankenstein is generally acclaimed as the novel that translated the dark and stormy ethos of the gothic novel into a foundation for modern science fiction. Now, it is distinctively packaged in hardcover with a beautifully designed jacket by noted illustrator Malika Favre. For years, Victor Frankenstein labors to create a new race of intelligent beings. He spends his nights scavenging human and animal body parts from graveyards, slaughterhouses, and hospital dissection rooms. By day he experiments in his secret laboratory, perfecting the creature who, he believes, will worship him as a god. But when he succeeds, Frankenstein is horrified by the ugly brutishness of the patchwork being he has brought to life, and he runs from it. Frankenstein has, indeed, created a monster--not by animating dead flesh but by abandoning his creation. Now, the monster is out for revenge.

Book excerpt: This Top Five Classics illustrated edition of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein includes: • All 65 woodcut illustrations by Lynd Ward from the 1934 edition • The unabridged 1831 text of the popular revised edition by Mary Shelley, as well as her complete, original 1818 text as an addendum • A helpful introduction and author bio Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is the foundational text of both the horror and science fiction genres, a classic that has been read, discussed, and adapted in every medium for going on 200 years. Dreamed up when the author was only 18 while on holiday in Switzerland with her lover Percy Bysshe Shelley and the poet Lord Byron, Frankenstein is the result of a challenge from Byron to each write their own “ghost story.” The result was a tale that would become synonymous with horror, that would be the first novel to ask the question, Are there some things man was not meant to know? Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant young scientist, discovers the secret to endowing inanimate flesh with life. Without thinking of the repercussions, he throws himself into realizing his ambition, only to recoil in terror at what he has created. Rejected by his creator and humanity, Frankenstein’s monster is driven by the primal desire to inspire love, or if to be cast aside, to inspire fear. Containing both the common 1831 revised edition and the author’s original 1818 text of Frankenstein, this Top Five Classics edition also features all 65 of Lynd Ward’s hauntingly beautiful, moody, and subtly erotic woodcut illustrations from his 1934 edition. Book excerpt: The California edition of the Pennyroyal Press "Frankenstein" unites the dark side of Barry Moser's art with the classic 1818 text of Mary Shelley's tale of moral transfiguration. In a vivid sequence of woodcuts, the reader witnesses the birth of the "monster" as Moser shapes him from darkness and gives him a form simultaneously ghastly in its malice and transfixing in its suffering.
