Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides an introduction to the process of software engineering. The revision concentrates on updating the book to reflect the most current trends and innovations in the field. The Universal Modeling Language (UML) has become an industry standard and now permeates this new edition. In this text, it is used for object-oriented analysis and design as well as when diagrams depict objects and their interrelationships. Design patterns, frameworks and software architecture have also become a popular topic in the field of software engineering and are part of a new chapter on reuse, portability, and inoperability. The inoperabilty material includes sections on such hot topics as OLE, COM, and CORBA. Some material from the 3rd edition has been reorganized into a new chapter on planning and estimating, including feature points and COCOMO II. While the text has been updated, the traditonal features which have defined the previous three editions of Schach's book have been retained. These include a balanced coverage of the object-oriented model along with the classical model (as reflected in the title) and an emphasis on metrics. The special considerations of object-oriented life-cycle models, object-oriented analysis, and object-oriented design are also retained in this edition.

Book excerpt: Integrating case studies to show the object oriented approach to software engineering, Object-Oriented and Classical Software Engineering, 7/e presents an excellent introduction to software engineering fundamentals, covering both traditional and object-oriented techniques. The coverage of both Agile processes and Open Source Software has been considerably expanded. In addition, the Osbert Oglesby running case study has been replaced with a new case study on the Martha Stockton Greengage Foundation. The new study highlights even more aspects of the Unified Process. The book’s unique organization remains in place, with Part I covering underlying software engineering theory, and Part II presenting the more practical life cycle. Complementing this well-balanced approach is the straightforward, student-friendly writing style, through which difficult concepts are presented in a clear, understandable manner. The new seventh edition provides an extensive updating of this classic software engineering text!

First, readers are introduced to the core concepts of the object-oriented methodology, which is used throughout the book to act as the foundation for software engineering and programming practices, and partly for the software engineering process itself. Then, the processes involved in software engineering are explained in more detail, especially methods and their applications in design, implementation, testing, and measurement, as they relate to software engineering projects. At last, readers are given the chance to practice these concepts by applying commonly used skills and tasks to a hands-on project. The impact of such a format is the potential for quicker and deeper understanding. Readers will master concepts and skills at the most basic levels before continuing to expand on and apply these lessons in later chapters.

Book excerpt: We have experienced different theories of software construction paradigms in the last few decades; such as ''structured programming'' in the 1970's and "object-oriented programming" in the 1980's. The object-oriented paradigm is considered a standard for many software development activities, from the analysis phase to various support phases. There is little quantitative research, however, regarding the question whether object-oriented programming improves productivity. Many assume that object-oriented programming is more productive than traditional structured programming. This assumption lacks concrete, empirical data that support such belief. This dissertation identifies problems in the current object-oriented programming practice, and then presents an alternative paradigm to help overcome these problems. This paradigm separates the declaration of data structures from program executable instructions. We call this paradigm {\it the separation principle}. We first tried to understand what this paradigm means in practice. We developed example programs in a variety of application areas. We found that the separation principle is a viable paradigm for practical program construction. In order to demonstrate the validity of this paradigm, we have conducted both theoretical and empirical studies. The theoretical study consists of complexity measurements. The empirical study constitutes human understanding measurement; its purpose is to show statistical significance. The results give evidence of the effectiveness of the separation principle for practical software construction.

Book excerpt: This book covers all you need to know to model and design software applications from use cases to software architectures in UML and shows how to apply the COMET UML-based modeling and design method to real-world problems. The author describes architectural patterns for various architectures, such as broker, discovery, and transaction patterns for service-oriented architectures, and addresses software quality attributes including maintainability, modifiability, testability, traceability, scalability, reusability, performance, availability, and security. Complete case studies illustrate design issues for different software architectures: a banking system for client/server architecture, an online shopping system for service-oriented architecture, an emergency monitoring system for component-based software architecture, and an automated guided vehicle for real-time software architecture. Organized as an introduction followed by several short, self-contained chapters, the book is perfect for senior undergraduate or graduate courses in software engineering and design, and for experienced software engineers wanting a quick reference at each stage of the analysis, design, and development of large-scale software systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software product lines are emerging as a critical new paradigm for software development. Product lines are enabling organizations to achieve impressive time-to-market gains and cost reductions. With the increasing number of product lines and product-line researchers and practitioners, the time is right for a comprehensive examination of the issues surrounding the software product line approach. The Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University is proud to sponsor the first conference on this important subject. This book comprises the proceedings of the First Software Product Line Conference (SPLC1), held August 28-31, 2000, in Denver, Colorado, USA. The twenty-seven papers of the conference technical program present research results and experience reports that cover all aspects of software product lines. Topics include business issues, enabling technologies, organizational issues, and life-cycle issues. Emphasis is placed on experiences in the development and fielding of product lines of complex systems, especially those that expose problems in the design, development, or evolution of software product lines. The book will be essential reading for researchers and practitioners alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical and Object-Oriented Software Engineering is designed for an introductory software engineering course. This book provides an excellent introduction to software engineering fundamentals, covering both traditional and object-oriented techniques. Schach's unique organization and style makes it excellent for use in a classroom setting. It presents the underlying software engineering theory in Part I and follows it up with the more practical life-cycle material in Part II. Many software engineering books are more like reference books, which do not provide the appropriate fundamentals before inundating students with implementation details. In this edition, more practical material has been added to help students understand how to use what they are learning. This has been done through the use of "How To" boxes and greater implementation detail in the case study. Additionally, the new edition contains the references to the most current literature and includes an overview of extreme programmming. The website in this edition will be more extensive. It will include Solutions, PowerPoints that incorporate lecture notes, newly developed self-quiz questions, and source code for the term project and case study.
