Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, James D. Watson, then just twentyfour, helped launch the greatest ongoing scientific quest of our time. Now, with unique authority and sweeping vision, he gives us the first full account of the genetic revolution—from Mendel’s garden to the double helix to the sequencing of the human genome and beyond. Watson’s lively, panoramic narrative begins with the fanciful speculations of the ancients as to why “like begets like” before skipping ahead to 1866, when an Austrian monk named Gregor Mendel first deduced the basic laws of inheritance. But genetics as we recognize it today—with its capacity, both thrilling and sobering, to manipulate the very essence of living things—came into being only with the rise of molecular investigations culminating in the breakthrough discovery of the structure of DNA, for which Watson shared a Nobel prize in 1962. In the DNA molecule’s graceful curves was the key to a whole new science. Having shown that the secret of life is chemical, modern genetics has set mankind off on a journey unimaginable just a few decades ago. Watson provides the general reader with clear explanations of molecular processes and emerging technologies. He shows us how DNA continues to alter our understanding of human origins, and of our identities as groups and as individuals. And with the insight of one who has remained close to every advance in research since the double helix, he reveals how genetics has unleashed a wealth of possibilities to alter the human condition—from genetically modified foods to genetically modified babies—and transformed itself from a domain of pure research into one of big business as well. It is a sometimes topsy-turvy world full of great minds and great egos, driven by ambitions to improve the human condition as well as to improve investment portfolios, a world vividly captured in these pages. Facing a future of choices and social and ethical implications of which we dare not remain uninformed, we could have no better guide than James Watson, who leads us with the same bravura storytelling that made The Double Helix one of the most successful books on science ever published. Infused with a scientist’s awe at nature’s marvels and a humanist’s profound sympathies, DNA is destined to become the classic telling of the defining scientific saga of our age.

Taking you inside the nativity of over thirty favorite songs and carols, Ace Collins introduces you to people you’ve never met, stories you’ve never heard, and meanings you’d never have imagined. The next time you and your family sing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," you’ll have a new understanding of its message and popular roots. You’ll discover how "Angels from the Realms of Glory," with its sublime lyrics and profound theology, helped usher in a quiet revolution in worship. You’ll learn the strange history of the haunting and powerful "O Holy Night," including the song’s surprising place in the history of modern communications. And you’ll step inside the life of Mark Lowry and find out how he came to pen the words to the contemporary classic "Mary, Did You Know?"Still other songs such as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" trace back to mysterious origins--to ninth-century monks, nameless clergy, and unknown commoners of ages past. Joining hands with such modern favorites as "White Christmas" and "The Christmas Song," they are part of the legacy of inspiration, faith, tears, love, and spiritual joy that is Christmas. From the rollicking appeal of "Jingle Bells" to the tranquil beauty of "Silent Night," the great songs of Christmas contain messages of peace, hope, and truth. Each in its own way expresses a facet of God’s heart and celebrates the birth of his greatest gift to the world--Jesus, the most wonderful Christmas Song of all.

Book excerpt: From Andrew Gant, Oxford professor and renowned British composer, The Carols of Christmas is a joyous account of the history behind our favorite carols--from Advent through Epiphany. Everyone loves a carol--in the end, even Ebenezer Scrooge had a soft spot for them! They have the power to evoke a special type of mid-winter joy, like the aroma of gingerbread or the twinkle of lights on a tree. It's a kind of magic. But how did they get that magic? Gant--a choirmaster, church musician, university professor, and writer--tells the story of twenty carols, each accompanied by lyrics and music, unraveling a captivating, and often surprising, tale of great musicians and thinkers, saints and pagans, shepherds and choirboys. Along the way, Gant answers some of the biggest questions he's received about these beloved carols over the years, including: How did the most beloved carols come to be? Why do we sing the versions of carols that we do? How did these carols stand the test of time? Readers get to delve into the history of favorites like "Good King Wenceslas," "Away in a Manger," and "O, Tannenbaum," discovering along the way how "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" came to replace "Hark, how all the welkin' ring" and how Ralph Vaughan Williams applied the tune of an English folk song about a dead ox to a poem by a nineteenth-century American pilgrim to make "O Little Town of Bethlehem." A charming book that brims with anecdote, expert knowledge, and Christmas spirit, The Carols of Christmas is a fittingly joyous account of one of the best-loved musical traditions.

Book Synopsis The English Carol by : Erik Routley

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the origin and development of the Christian carol from the Middle Ages, through the period of the Puritan suppression, to the present time. It distinguishes the carol from the hymn, the one being essentially a medieval from of Christian song, the other post-Reformation. It shows how the carol presupposes a different conception of worship, of the church and of the relation between church and society, from that presupposed in the hymn. Many carols from foreign sources, where they have come into English use, are included and there is much information relating to the seasonal hymns, chiefly for Christmas, which are closely associated with the carol tradition. Such compositions as 'Adeste fideles,' 'Christians awake,' and 'Hark, the herald angels sing' (all dating about 1740-1750) are not carols at all thought they are commonly thought to be so. A section on Christmas hymns finds its place in this setting. The author then passes on to the Victorian carol, with its impoverished quality of words and music, and in the course of this he traces the source of the error which has caused modern Christians to regard Christmas as the only season suitable for carol singing. Next comes a reference to the folk song revival of about 1900, followed by a discussion of modern customs in carol singing and the place of the carol in present-day society. Throughout, in support of his text, the author draws on numerous illustrative quotations of both words and music. An appendix contains documents which relate to the history of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, including a statement by the Dean of York, who compiled the present form of the King's College Festival.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christmas Carols and Hymns for School and Choir Great care has been exercised to include only music that is worthy of study. It is believed that the superior excellence of the selections will appeal to competent choir leaders, who will find ample material in the book for many Christmas pro grams. The book is intended also for use in schools. Many of the Carols may be sung in unison, especially by children, with excellent effect. With few exceptions, the music will be found equally suitable for high schools and choirs. The metronome marks have been inserted to indicate the general tempo and not to fix the absolute speed at which the pieces are to be taken. In many of the selections, various modifications of tempo, rhythm, and accent are demanded by the character of the text or the music, and a rigid adherence to the metronome mark is often most unfortunate. However, the most important duty of the conductor is to know and indicate the proper tempo, and the metronome marks may assist the inexperienced conductor in this most important matter.
