Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game Animals of Africa The work in its present state can only be regarded as a preliminary attempt to give something like a complete account of. The game-fauna of the African continent; and it is certain that many alterations and, it is hoped, many additions - will have to be made in future editions. Two points in connection with the African continent demand brief mention firstly, its enormous area, about four times that of India and, secondly, the marked distinction of the fauna of Africa north of the Sahara, or north of the tropic of Cancer, from that of all the vast region to the southward of the same. Northern Africa is, in fact, so far as its animals are concerned, a part of Europe. We have, for instance, in this area such groups as deer, sheep, goats, and bears, which are conspicuous by their absence from the rest of the continent, except so far as sheep and goats have penetrated some distance into the highlands of the north-eastern corner. On the other hand, what may be called the characteristic African animals are to a great extent wanting from the tract north of the Sahara. Africa south of the tropic of Cancer is conveniently called Ethiopian Africa, or simply Ethiopia. The local differences in the Ethiopian fauna are chiefly dependent upon what naturalists call station. One of the most marked of these local faunas is that of the great equatorial forest-zone. The Cape fauna likewise presented many peculiarities in the days of its prime; while the fauna of East Africa shows a certain approximation to that of India. Except that a few occur in Syria and Arabia, the antelopes and most of the other herbivorous big game animals of Ethiopian Africa belong to types unknown elsewhere. Exclusive of the gazelles, the antelopes, for instance, are generically distinct from those of other lands; while giraffes, okapi, hippopotamuses, wart-hogs, bush-pigs, forest-hogs, and ant-bears are unknown elsewhere at the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life-Histories of African Game Animals, Vol. 1 At present we know so little regarding the habits and life-history of the various game animals that we find our selves at a loss to account for many of their most obvious peculiarities. For instance, the distribution of almost any game animal offers some features which with our present knowledge are inexplicable. It is well known that every animal, or plant for that matter, has strongly within it the tendency to enlarge its distributional area until it covers the habitable earth. It is equally Well known, although not so universally kept in mind, that the distribution Of each species marks the limits within which it is able successfully to compete with its environment. It would appear, there fore, a comparatively easy matter to determine the factors which are accountable for the distribution of any species; and yet no task in natural history is more difficult. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game Animals of Africa Hitherto those interested in the sporting animals of Africa, if they wished to gain information upon particular species, have been compelled to search through many volumes before they could attain their object. This book is intended to obviate, as far as possible, that defect. Within the following pages will be found details, many of them entirely new, concerning all the more important of the game mammals occurring throughout the length and breadth of Africa. It is not claimed for this work that it is complete and final. Africa is not yet fully explored, and although during the last half-century that great continent has yielded up innumerable secrets of zoology, the discoveries of recent years suggest that forms of animal life, at present unknown to science, may still be awaiting the naturalist and the hunter in the remoter and still unknown regions of the interior. It may, however, be claimed that, concerning known species, as much information as it is possible to comprise within the limits of one stout volume is to be found within the following pages. This information has been conveyed in a reasonably popular form, and the non-scientific reader should have little difficulty in laying his finger quickly upon the facts of which he may be in search. It should add to the interest of readers to know that the great bulk of the book has been contributed by well-known African sportsmen, who have had intimate personal experience of the animals of which they treat.
