Book excerpt: In a bizarre twist of events, Callo falls into the Cavern of the Righteous and emerges elsewhere, from a forgotten cave. His leg is still broken, but Mishami carries him into an impressive land full of both sublime beauty and vicious horrors. The fourth Companion arises and starts training. June is traveling with a group of people as different from one another as snowflakes, and Jray drags June into fighting warriors for money. Diamond who is cursed, compliments of Seamus and Gema, must choose between a life of loneliness or dangerous love. Kara discovers her true identity as the Red Companion during a brief sojourn with the Dragon Warriors. And one of Karl’s Gifted almost gets murdered by a creature who used to be Gallo. The Blue, Red and Black Companions are all on their way to the Castle. However, bounty hunters, Destroyers, demons, Hagos, and Creepers sent by Klastos hunt them down, and go into fiery battle. In the meantime, Opal, Wagner and Pop Tolenko must perform a Rite of Unity to evade soldiers, and Ethos demands that Uhna betray her husband or die under the Athany curse. In this third book of the series, lives are lost, new allies join the Companions and Magi, and they are trapped in a web of terror woven by the impending civil war between the Falesto brothers. The lives of all races in the Empire are teetering on the edge of destruction, and the Gifted Magi must unite before the Falestos’ plots to transform all non-humans into walking demons to fight the expansion battles become a reality. Clashes of Wills is the third book in the Assembly of Thirteen series where the magic of the few with honor repeatedly clash with the cruelty of the wills of those in power.

Book excerpt: The United States' 48th President elected in 2028, was a certain Jeremiah Abrahams, and the moment he had his feet behind that famous desk in the Oval Office than he was thrown in at the deep end. The reason being in early 2029 he and all other world leaders had to attend a vitally important UN Economic Summit in Tokyo, where Abrahams would come face-to-face with his Nemesis, the Devil worshipping British Foreign Secretary Dale Semble. From then on this President had to grapple with what effect this particular Foreign Secretary and his capabilities would have on the international political order! Instead of entirely relying on his Administration and security services, Abrahams had to increasingly turn to the Church. But ultimately Jeremiah had to rely on a very major person from history and the Christian faith. And together they had to counter the awesome threat which came from this Devil worshipping Foreign Secretary.

Book excerpt: Minor debts, derisive remarks, a fight over a parking space, butting in line—these are the little things that nevertheless account for much of the violence in human society. But why? Roger V. Gould considers this intriguing question in Collision of Wills. He argues that human conflict is more likely to occur in symmetrical relationships—among friends or social equals—than in hierarchical ones, wherein the difference of social rank between the two individuals is already established. This, he maintains, is because violence most often occurs when someone wants to achieve superiority or dominance over someone else, even if there is no substantive reason for doing so. In making the case for this original idea, Gould explores a diverse range of examples, including murders, blood feuds, vendettas, revolutions, and the everyday disagreements that compel people to act violently. The result is an intelligent and provocative work that restores the study of conflict to the center of social inquiry.

Book excerpt: Detective Snead of the Boston police looked up quickly and removed his pipe as Emily and Edward entered his office. Emily paled as she clung to her brother's arm. Edward was more at ease, but his dark eyes clearly showed the grief that so recently overtook them. They were offered chairs, but both remained standing. When Sergeant Camden entered Snead's office, Emily broke down and wept. "Forgive my sister," Edward said, squeezing her right hand tightly. "Our mother died last night." "How may we help you?" Snead asked patiently. "I am Edward Mandrake and this is my sister Emily. We would like you to find out who killed our mother."

By focusing on well-known people who represent these issues, the book creates stories that are selective, focused, and coherent, to paint a portrait of the United States in the past century and a half.

Book excerpt: In A Necessary Evil, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Garry Wills shows that distrust of government is embedded deep in the American psyche. From the revolt of the colonies against king and parliament to present-day tax revolts, militia movements, and debates about term limits, Wills shows that American antigovernment sentiment is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of our history. By debunking some of our fondest myths about the Founding Fathers, the Constitution, and the taming of the frontier, Wills shows us how our tendency to hold our elected government in disdain is misguided.

Book excerpt: In their seven years together, quarterback Johnny Unitas and coach Don Shula, kings of the fabled Baltimore Colts of the 1960s, created one of the most successful franchises in sports. Unitas and Shula had a higher winning percentage than Lombardi's Packers, but together they never won the championship. Baltimore lost the big game to the Browns in 1964 and to Joe Namath and the Jets in Super Bowl III--both in stunning upsets. The Colts' near misses in the Shula era were among the most confounding losses any sports franchise ever suffered. Rarely had a team in any league performed so well, over such an extended period, only to come up empty. The two men had a complex relationship stretching back to their time as young teammates competing for their professional lives. Their personal conflict mirrored their tumultuous times. As they elevated the brutal game of football, the world around them clashed about Vietnam, civil rights, and sex. Collision of Wills looks at the complicated relationship between Don Shula, the league's winningest coach of all time, and his star player Johnny Unitas, and how their secret animosity fueled the Colts in an era when their losses were as memorable as their victories.

Book excerpt: America’s leading religious scholar and public intellectual introduces lay readers to the Qur’an with a measured, powerful reading of the ancient text Garry Wills has spent a lifetime thinking and writing about Christianity. In What the Qur’an Meant, Wills invites readers to join him as he embarks on a timely and necessary reconsideration of the Qur’an, leading us through perplexing passages with insight and erudition. What does the Qur’an actually say about veiling women? Does it justify religious war? There was a time when ordinary Americans did not have to know much about Islam. That is no longer the case. We blundered into the longest war in our history without knowing basic facts about the Islamic civilization with which we were dealing. We are constantly fed false information about Islam—claims that it is essentially a religion of violence, that its sacred book is a handbook for terrorists. There is no way to assess these claims unless we have at least some knowledge of the Qur’an. In this book Wills, as a non-Muslim with an open mind, reads the Qur’an with sympathy but with rigor, trying to discover why other non-Muslims—such as Pope Francis—find it an inspiring book, worthy to guide people down through the centuries. There are many traditions that add to and distort and blunt the actual words of the text. What Wills does resembles the work of art restorers who clean away accumulated layers of dust to find the original meaning. He compares the Qur’an with other sacred books, the Old Testament and the New Testament, to show many parallels between them. There are also parallel difficulties of interpretation, which call for patient exploration—and which offer some thrills of discovery. What the Qur’an Meant is the opening of a conversation on one of the world’s most practiced religions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the literature on jurisprudence and theology by arguing for the role of a theoretically robust Christian theology in a legal community dominated by secular and liberal ideology. It is not a doctrinal or empirical analysis, but a theoretical exposition of the way in which modern law has contingently drifted from its theological origins. As a result, the legal system and the ideal of individual and communal relationship it envisages is characterised by antagonism and alienation, or more broadly, violence. The book contends that the way to restore a legal community of peace is to return to a Christian theology which is informed by Trinitarian thinking or the notion of unity in diversity, and reunites faith with reason. Returning reason to its ground in being allows peaceful persuasion by the revelation of God's perfect being through the Trinity and Incarnation, which models and enables the peaceful coexistence of difference through self-sacrificing love. This in turn produces the law of love – to love your neighbour as yourself. Since love does no wrong to a neighbour, a legal community operating by the law of love can fulfil the obligations of law by going beyond merely what is required by law and love individuals as part of a community.
