Book Synopsis Clarinet Concerto in C Minor, Op. 36 by : Philipp Jakob Riotte
Download or read book Clarinet Concerto in C Minor, Op. 36 written by Philipp Jakob Riotte and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early years of the nineteenth century saw wide-ranging developments to the mechanics and acoustics of the Classical clarinet. The Russian virtuoso clarinetist, composer, and instrument designer Iwan Müller brought about some of the most important innovations in clarinet design. His clarinet omnitonique, a thirteen-keyed instrument, was radical in that it would be able to play comfortably in all tonalities, dispensing with the need for the family of clarinets pitched in different keys. For a prototype of this nouvelle clarineta collaboration between Müller and the noted Viennese maker, Johann Merkleinthe German composer Philipp Jakob Riotte (17761856) wrote a virtuosic concerto. This premiered in Vienna in the autumn of 1809. Published in 1818, and previously thought to be lost, Riottes op. 36 for the prototype clarinet omnitonique displays a diverse palette of keys, extreme registral contrasts, and chromatic writing for clarinet, which were clearly facets of Müllers playing enabled by his new instrument. The work enhances our understanding of the development and deployment of the clarinet omnitonique within the concerto genre in the early nineteenth century. It serves also to reinstate the important relationship between Müller, Riotte, and Merklein.

Download or read book Joseph Holbrooke written by Paul Watt and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first scholarly work to document the musical life of Joseph Holbrooke, one of Britain’s most prolific and controversial composers during the first half of the twentieth century. Holbrooke was outspoken on many issues, including the maligned fortunes of British composers, which he believed were brought about by apathy and indifference on the part of critics and the public. Despite doubts in various quarters over Holbrooke’s ability to forge a unique compositional idiom, many of his works were performed to critical acclaim in Britain, Europe, and the United States. Today, Holbrooke’s music is increasingly enjoyed and recorded. Joseph Holbrooke: Composer, Critic, and Musical Patriot opens with a biographical overview of Holbrooke that concentrates on his relationship with Granville Bantock and Wales and the role that Lord Howard de Walden played in Holbrooke’s work and development. Contributors offer studies of a selection of repertory by Holbrooke, including his chamber music, the operas Pierrot and Pierrette and The Enchanted Garden, and his tone poem “The Raven.” The final chapter describes Holbrooke’s patriotism by examining his book Contemporary British Composers, which was published in 1925. Included is an appendix that provides the first comprehensive and corrected list of Holbrooke’s compositions. This book will interest not only musicologists, musicians and listeners interested in the repertory of the British classical music tradition but also scholars and general readers interested in the ways Celticism, poetic inspiration, and nationalist ideology were expressed in the work of classical composers in the early twentieth century.

Download or read book Classical Form written by William E. Caplin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-12-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on ideas first advanced by Arnold Schoenberg and later developed by Erwin Ratz, this book introduces a new theory of form for instrumental music in the classical style. The theory provides a broad set of principles and a comprehensive methodology for the analysis of classical form, from individual ideas, phrases, and themes to the large-scale organization of complete movements. It emphasizes the notion of formal function, that is, the specific role a given formal unit plays in the structural organization of a classical work.
