Book excerpt: Clara Wu is excited to rejoin her friends Sung Kim, Yuka Satoh and Daniel Nguyen in preparation for the next battle against the Warlock's demon-spawned army. But a tragic mistake leaves one of her friends in perilous danger and the well laid plans for Azen's defense are put in jeopardy. Everything hinges on Clara embarking on a daring rescue mission to save her friend, from the Warlock. Clara had been silently flying atop the crane for some time. The knots in her stomach were twisted so tight, she thought they would sheer apart at any moment and tear her insides out. She looked up as the cool night air whisked by her cheeks like sharp daggers. Her eyes looked about her and she could barely see the small stealthy Top Talon squadron against the dark of night. But she knew they were there and were probably as anxious as she was. Everything depended on a successful rescue so that they could make it back in time for the next battle. Without all the Azen Warriors at the battlefront, the Azen armies would not stand a chance against the unrelenting Warlock's army. Azen cannot fall, she thought as she let out a sigh of hopelessness. She thumbed the comforting feel of the Bamboo Jade to calm her anxiousness when her crane whispered, "Empress Warrior Wu, we are almost there." Clara looked up and she saw it in the distance. It was faint but she could make out the large silhouette of some forbidding structure jutting out of a mountain side. It was the Warlock's fortress, and somewhere inside was her fellow warrior that needed rescue before it was too late. This is Book 3 of the exciting Clara Wu and the World of Azen series. Begin your adventures with Book 1, Clara Wu and the Portal Book, and followed by Book 2, Clara Wu and the Jade Labyrinth. An immersive epic fantasy steeped in Asian themes that will allow Asian American teens, children and even adults, to see themselves as the heroes in story. A story aimed at better Asian Representation!

Book excerpt: "How foolish!" exclaimed the Warlock as the yellow slivers of his dark eyes undulated as he stared down at his demon lords from this cold stone throne. His frustrated voice reverberated through the air and seemed to ruffle the fur along the heads of the ox and horse head demon lords, while the brutish oni and elegant gumiho were unfazed. But it was the fifth ethereal demon lord, awoken from its dormancy, that the Warlock looked at and smiled as he uttered, "There is no final battle." The darkness was crisp as it whizzed by Yuka as she silently flew atop the onyx-covered Guardian Crane. In that dark moment, she could sense the tension along her tensile sleek feathered body. She was about to return to that wretched place as tormented memories haunted her. But this time, she wasn't alone as she turned toward Daniel.Though it wasn't the goal, Daniel couldn't stop the festering thoughts that he had: Revenge. He had to find a way to atone for what he did and if he could only confront the Warlock, redemption was his. He was confident that with his friends and guardians, they would seize the day as he looked back at Sung.Eagerness filled Sung and he knew that it stemmed from the possibility of confronting her once more: The gumiho. He could never forgive how he had humiliated him and almost took his life. If it wasn't for Clara, he wouldn't be alive. His eyes looked up and saw the beguiling tranquility in the night sky adorned with moons and stars. They were beautiful he thought as he turned his head toward Clara.Clara was nervous and calm at the same time as she readjusted her grip on the harness aboard her faithful crane, Shiori. The squadrons were like whispers of feathered missiles shooting through the darkness and she felt emboldened, yet she couldn't help but feel some apprehension. But her thoughts were interrupted when the squadrons of cranes started to slow down until the squawk broke the silence. The battle to end all battles had begun.

Book excerpt: An instant #1 New York Times bestseller! Pacific Rim meets The Handmaid's Tale in this blend of Chinese history and mecha science fiction for YA readers. The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain. When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead. To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

Book excerpt: From the internationally acclaimed artist, a stunning collection of portraits of ground-breaking women—Joan of Arc, Josephine Baker, Greta Thunberg, Misty Copeland, and many more history-making women whose names have been forgotten and are finally being brought to light. • With a Foreword by Roxane Gay. “This book, as a whole, offers the reader possibility and promise … You will be introduced to many of these women for the first time, because history is rarely kind to women until it is forced to be. You will learn about artists and activists, rulers and rebels.” —Roxane Gay, from the Foreword Original Sisters was born from the COVID-19 quarantine. In early March 2020, locked down in her home-studio in Toronto and longing for inspiration, artist Anita Kunz started researching women on the Internet. She wasn’t sure what she was looking for, but she soon found an array of astonishing people who had done amazing things—some of whom she had heard of, but most of whom she had not. And then she began to paint their pictures and write down their stories. The result is a jaw-dropping feat of historic and artistic research. The wide variety of lives, occupations, time periods, and achievements is absolutely mind-bending. From Joan of Arc to Josephine Baker, from Hippolyta to Greta Thunberg, from Anne Frank to Misty Copeland: these women made and changed history. But there are just as many whom you’ve never heard of, who were never recognized in their lifetimes, whose achievements need to be brought to light. They include the anti-Nazi activist Sophie Scholl, who was executed at age twenty-one by the Third Reich, and Alice Ball, a young African American scientist who discovered a treatment for leprosy but died tragically before she could receive credit for it. This is not only a breathtaking art book. Original Sisters also recounts a secret history that must be told so that it is a secret no more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Party Family explores the formation and consolidation of the state in revolutionary China through the crucial role that social ties—specifically family ties—played in the state's capacity to respond to crisis before and after the foundation of the People's Republic of China. Central to these ties, Kimberley Ens Manning finds, were women as both the subjects and leaders of reform. Drawing on interviews with 163 participants in the provinces of Henan and Jiangsu, as well as government documents and elite memoirs, biographies, speeches, and reports, Manning offers a new theoretical lens—attachment politics—to underscore how family and ideology intertwined to create an important building block of state capacity and governance. As The Party Family details, infant mortality in China dropped by more than half within a decade of the PRC's foundation, a policy achievement produced to a large extent through the personal and family ties of the maternalist policy coalition that led the reform movement. However, these achievements were undermined or reversed in the complex policy struggles over the family during Mao's Great Leap Forward (1958–60).

Book excerpt: Written by one of America's preeminent labor historians, this book is the definitive account of one of the most spectacular, captivating, complex and strangely neglected stories in Western history--the emergence of migratory farmworkers and the development of California agriculture. Street has systematically worked his way through a mountain of archival materials--more than 500 manuscript collections, scattered in 22 states, including Spain and Mexico--to follow the farmworker story from its beginnings on Spanish missions into the second decade of the twentieth century. The result is a comprehensive tour de force. Scene by scene, the epic narrative clarifies and breathes new life into a controversial and instructive saga long surrounded by myth, conjecture, and scholarly neglect. With its panoramic view spanning 144 years and moving from the US-Mexico border to Oregon, Beasts of the Field reveals diverse patterns of life and labor in the fields that varied among different crops, regions, time periods, and racial and ethic groups. Enormous in scope, packed with surprising twists and turns, and devastating in impact, this compelling, revelatory work of American social history will inform generations to come of the history of California and the nation.

Book excerpt: At the end of the Qing dynasty, works of fiction by male authors placed women in new roles. Fiction’s Family delves into the writings of one literary family from western Zhejiang whose works were emblematic of shifting attitudes toward women. The mother, Wang Qingdi, and the father, Zhan Sizeng, published their poems during the second half of the nineteenth century. Two of their four sons, Zhan Xi and Zhan Kai, wrote novels that promoted reforms in women’s lives. This book explores the intergenerational link, as well as relations between the sons, to find out how the conflicts faced by the parents may have been refigured in the novels of their sons. Its central question is about the brothers’ reformist attitudes. Were they based on the pronouncements of political leaders? Were they the result of trends in Shanghai publishing? Or did they derive from Wang Qingdi’s disappointment in her “companionate marriage,” as manifested in her poems? By placing one family at the center of this study, Ellen Widmer illuminates the diachronic bridge between the late Qing and the period just before it, the synchronic interplay of genres during the brothers’ lifetimes, and the interaction of Shanghai publishing with regions outside Shanghai.

Book excerpt: This is a multi-author volume resulted from an international conference focusing on topics related to our understanding of the role of China in the global history. Apart from introductory chapters exploring methodological issues and providing big pictures of framing China in the world in particular time zones, this volume also covers rich discussions on the following themes from the ancient period to the twentieth century: organized water transport, cultural interactions, navigators, port cities, smuggling activities, customs service, foreign relations, migration, and diasporas. Written by scholars of different generations who are based in diverse regions including Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US, the chapters in this volume either address old questions from new perspectives, or table new topics that were largely ignored in previous scholarship. Some go further to brainstorm possible research directions in the future. This thought-provoking volume will be beneficial to readers who are interested in rethinking China's position in the global historical stage against the backdrop of Post-Orientalism.
