Book Synopsis The Hypocrisy of Disco by : Clane Hayward
Download or read book The Hypocrisy of Disco written by Clane Hayward and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir of girlhood among California’s hippie communities is an “offbeat tale of preadolescence [written] with remarkable honesty and respect” (Publishers Weekly). Born in San Francisco just before the Summer of Love, Clane Hayward grew up on hippie communes throughout the west. Her poignantly funny, sometimes melancholy, and always riveting memoir recounts her extraordinary life up until her thirteenth birthday. School was a particularly happy event—it meant a hot lunch and clothes that matched! But Clane’s mother warned her that schools are just zoos run by the government. From a world of complex relationships, uncertain rules, and constant surprises, Clane forged a childhood. She did it sometimes with, sometimes without, her bong-puffing, Buddha-quoting, macrobiotic mother and her wild-haired, redneck father. Hypocrisy of Disco is an honest, direct, and truly unforgettable tale, and a tribute to the resilience of youth.

Book Synopsis Lovers and Beloveds by : Gary Richards
Download or read book Lovers and Beloveds written by Gary Richards and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A challenge to traditional criticism, this engaging study demonstrates that issues of sexuality-and same-sex desire in particular-were of central importance in the literary production of the Southern Renaissance. Especially during the end of that period-approximately the 1940s and 1950s-the national literary establishment tacitly designated the South as an allowable setting for fictionalized deviancy, thus permitting southern writers tremendous freedom to explore sexual otherness. In Lovers and Beloveds, Gary Richards draws on contemporary theories of sexuality in reading the fiction of six writers of the era who accepted that potentially pejorative characterization as an opportunity: Truman Capote, William Goyen, Harper Lee, Carson McCullers, Lillian Smith, and Richard Wright. Richards skillfully juxtaposes forgotten texts by those writers with canonical works to identify the complex narratives of same-sex desire. In their novels and stories, the authors consistently reimagine gender roles, centralize homoeroticism, and probe its relationship with class, race, biological sex, and southern identity. This is the first book to assess the significance of same-sex desire in a broad range of southern texts, making a crucial contribution to the study of both literature and sexuality.
Book Synopsis The Big Book of the Continental Op by : Dashiell Hammett
Download or read book The Big Book of the Continental Op written by Dashiell Hammett and published by Vintage Crime/Black Lizard. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now for the first time ever in one volume, all twenty-eight stories and two serialized novels starring the Continental Op—one of the greatest characters in storied history of detective fiction. Dashiell Hammett is the father of modern hard-boiled detective stories. His legendary works have been lauded for almost one hundred years by fans, and his novel The Maltese Falcon was adapted into a classic film starring Humphrey Bogart. One of Dashiell Hammett's most memorable characters, the Continental Op made his debut in Black Mask magazine on October 1, 1923, narrating the first of twenty-eight stories and two novels that would change forever the face of detective fiction. The Op is a tough, wry, unglamorous gumshoe who has inspired a following that is both global and enduring. He has been published in periodicals, paperback digests, and short story collections, but until now, he has never, in all his ninety-two years, had the whole of his exploits contained in one book. The book features all twenty-eight of the original standalone Continental Op stories, the original serialized versions of Red Harvest and The Dain Curse, and previously unpublished material. This anthology of Continental Op stories is the only complete, one-volume work of its kind.
