Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the civilian employment experiences of USMA graduates from the Classes of 1920-1949. Data were gathered by means of a questionnaire mailed in the Spring of 1970 and information was obtained and reported on for two major areas: (1) ease of transition from military to civilian employment; and (2) civilian job characteristics and success. In general the major finding in regard to (1) was that most graduates feel that their education and training received at the Military Academy and later as officers have strong carry-over effects to their civilian jobs. In regard to (2) the most relevant findings were that USMA graduates had been able to find employment in a wide variety of jobs, most receive fine salaries and consider themselves successful in civilian life.

Book excerpt: The purposes of this research were to obtain some basic information concerning the civilian employment experiences of graduates from the Classes of 1950-1965, to determine the value of USMA's and the Military Service's education and training for their civilian employment experiences, and to compare their responses to those of graduates from the Classes of 1920-1949, who were asked the same questions in a prior survey. It was found that the USMA graduates from both surveys were employed in a wide variety of civilian occupations and have fairly decent incomes from these jobs. The graduates also feel that the education and training received at USMA and while in the service are valuable and transferrable to their civilian occupations. A solid majority of the respondents would once again attend USMA if they could do it over. Similarities and differences in the responses of the Classes of 1950-1965 and 1920-1949 are noted. SOC is a continuation of the Longitudinal Research on Officer Careers (LROC) survey research program. The LROC program called for similar surveys to be mailed to a longitudinal sample of company grade officers each year over a number of years. Surveys were administered in 1988, 1989,1990, and 1992. The SOC was first administered in May of 1996. Samples for SOC included all officers who had responded to any of the LROC surveys and who were still on active duty, as well as a new randomly-drawn cross-sectional sample of officers at all ranks. This report summarizes findings for the new 1996 cross-sectional sample of officers. The SOC continues to provide data on the values, altitudes, family situations, and career experiences of Army officers who are serving in Army Competitive Category branches. SOC results will be used to test models of work, career, family, and personal factors that influence officers' career decisions. The SOC also provides a rich longitudinal database for examining the Army experience from a long-term perspective."--DTIC.

In this sequel volume, he chronicles how the corps' responsibilities and leadership along the young nation's borders continued to grow. In the process, he shows, officers reflected an increasing commitment to professionalism, insulation from partisanship, and deference to civilian authority-all tempered in the forge of frustrating, politically complex operations and diplomacy along the nation's frontiers. Watson now focuses on the quarter-century between the Army's reduction in force in 1821 and the Mexican War. He examines a broad swath of military activity beginning with campaigns against southeastern Indians, notably the dispossession of the Creeks remaining in Georgia and Alabama from 1825 to 1834; the expropriation of the Cherokee between 1836 and 1838; and the Second Seminole War. He also explores peacekeeping on the Canadian border, which exploded in rebellion against British rule at the end of 1837, prompting British officials to applaud the U.S. Army for calming tensions and demonstrating its government's support for the international state system. He then follows the gradual extension of U.S. sovereignty in the Southwest through military operations west of the Missouri River and along the Louisiana-Texas border from 1821 to 1838 and through dragoon expeditions onto the central and southern Plains between 1834 and 1845.
