Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a newly-minted 2nd lieutenant in the Union Army, Lem Abbott was tossed head-first into General Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign. He saw action in all the major battles of that campaign and was severely injured while with Sheridan at the Battle of Opequon (Third Battle of Winchester).Abbott kept a diary during his time in the American Civil War and his descriptions are vivid and compelling. As he lay wounded at Opequon, he nevertheless could not take his eyes of the frenetic Sheridan, commanding the field like a chess player while mounted on Rienzi, his black steed."My first wound was from the butt end of an exploding shell in the breast which maimed and knocked me down and simultaneously as I felt a minie ball fired but a rod away in my front just grazed my forehead, torn through my upper lip crushing both jaws and carrying away eleven teeth, the most painless dentistry I ever had done; but, Oh! the shock it gave my system and the misery I suffered that night!"Despite his wounds, he returned to service and remained with the Federal Army until Appomattox. He then made a career in the army until mustered out in 1883 due to complications from his Civil War wounds.Front-line letters and diaries of the Civil War bring an immediacy to a long-ago event and connect us to these everyday men and women who lived it, and this is one of the best.

Book excerpt: The following Diary covering the interesting period of the Civil War from January 1, to December 31, 1864, and a portion of 1865 to the surrender of General R. E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, Va., was kept by the Author at the age of twenty-two when an officer of the Tenth Regiment Vermont Volunteer Infantry, Third and First Brigade, Third Division, Third and Sixth Corps respectively, Army of the Potomac, and is a brief war history as seen by a young soldier literally from the front line of battle during General U. S. Grant's celebrated campaign from the Rapidan River to Petersburg, Va., and Gen. P. H. Sheridan's famous Shenandoah Valley campaign in the summer and fall of 1864. During this time the Author passed from the grades of Second to First Lieutenant and Captain, and commanded in the meantime in different battles five or more companies in his regiment which afforded an excellent opportunity to make a fairly interesting general diary of the fighting qualities of his regiment and especially of the companies which he commanded during that most interesting period of the Civil War when the backbone of the Rebellion was broken, which, together with Sherman and Thomas' cooperations led to the surrender of General R. E. Lee at Appomattox C. H. April 9, 1865.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now unclear why Phil Koempel's diary was subtitled "1861-1865" when it was first published, as the extant manuscript contains only his last year of service in the American Civil War starting with his re-enlistment in 1864. However, this last year of service was full of action and sacrifice. He was an early enlistee upon the outbreak of war, was at the first battle of Bull Run, served with Fremont, Sheridan, Pope, and was with Grant at Appomattox.Captured in June of 1864, he spent many months in the hellish Andersonville Confederate prison camp. Sick and nearly starved to death, he maintained his diary until he was paroled back to Union lines, recovered his health, and went with Grant's troops to the surrender of Lee's army. The great value in Koempel's diary is it's day-to-day details. He even has price lists for the meager goods available at Andersonville.

Book excerpt: Beautiful, brilliant, opinionated, and very witty, 21-year-old Sarah Morgan began a diary in 1862 to chronicle the effects of war upon her family and friends. Throughout the diary, you see a young, self-aware woman both fascinated and appalled by what she saw during four years of the American Civil War in the south.Devoted to family, she worried about her brothers in the Confederate cause, her mother's health, and the home they had to abandon. Yet she was also full of fun, running out with friends to watch the Union bombardment of Baton Rouge and describing it immediately in her diary. She saw battles between gunboats on the Mississippi and Union troops marching through her beloved home city. All the while, her lovely writing will delight and enthrall you. She had an ear for language and an eye for detail. Since its first publication in 1913, it has been considered one of the best Confederate memoirs available.Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

Book excerpt: Madison & Adams Press presents the Civil War Memories Series. This meticulous selection of the firsthand accounts, memoirs and diaries is specially comprised for Civil War enthusiasts and all people curious about the personal accounts and true life stories of the unknown soldiers, the well known commanders, politicians, nurses and civilians amidst the war. "A Diary From Dixie" is a Civil War diary which paints a "vivid picture of a society in the throes of its life-and-death struggle." The author described the war from within her upper-class circles of Southern planter society, but encompassed all classes in her book. Literary critics have praised Chesnut's diary. The influential writer Edmund Wilson termed it "a work of art", "masterpiece" of the genre and the most important work by a Confederate author.

Book excerpt: "Great anxiety is expressed by all to reach home by the Fourth of July, which at present looks very probable. But, dear Journal, I cannot write, I feel too good." Jenk Jones would make it home on the 3rd of July, 1865. After three long years away from home with the 6th Wisconsin Artillery Battery, his reunion with family was, to him, indescribably joyful. Much had changed but the bonds remained the same. Along the way he'd seen horror and bloodshed, heartbreak, lost friends, and final victory. He was at Vicksburg and other major battles and kept "Mr. Journal" throughout, with the exception of his time in quarantine for smallpox. He recorded the ecstasy of news that Richmond had fallen, followed by Lee's surrender soon after. He writes of the sorrow he and his comrades felt at the news of Lincoln's assassination and how they all felt they'd lost a family member. Frontline diaries of the Civil War bring an immediacy to a long-ago event and connect us to these everyday men and women who lived it. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.

Charlie enlisted at 17, and, perhaps, was the wildest boy in his Regiment."Secular or religious, you will find Alexander Betts' diary from his service in the American Civil War moving, interesting, and illuminating of its time. Edited and published by his son in 1901, the diary entries provide fascinating details from everyday life during the war in the south.Betts barely mentions slavery, never mentions the names "Lincoln" or "Grant." He was referred to by Robert E. Lee as "that model chaplain." He attended to the spiritual needs of soldiers, yes, but also held many a dying man to comfort him. He was as devoted in his care to captured and wounded Union soldiers as his own.Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Year in the Civil War: A Diary of the Events From April 1st, 1864, to April 1st, 1865 The proof reader of this little book wishes to say that his love and admiration and pride for its writer has been deepened and widened for having gone with him through his daily chroniclings of this last year of the great civil conflict. There is never a compromise of right, never a faltering from duty, not one word of bitterness, only a deep regret at all times for the unhappy condition of his country. After reading it and seeing again the ter rible havoc that war made; the dead, the dying, the wounded, the sick, the tired foot-sore and weary soldier, the sufferings of helpless women and children, the de struction of property, the wreck and ruin every where, the proof reader joins with General Sherman in saying: War IS Hell. N 0 other word quite expresses the meaning so well. H. M. P. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
