Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Serbia, as elsewhere in postsocialist Europe, the rise of “civil society” was expected to support a smooth transformation to Western models of liberal democracy and capitalism. More than twenty years after the Yugoslav wars, these expectations appear largely unmet. Frontiers of Civil Society asks why, exploring the roles of multiple civil society forces in a set of government “reforms” of society and individuals in the early 2010s, and examining them in the broader context of social struggles over neoliberal restructuring and transnational integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Sociology - Politics, Majorities, Minorities, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: The concept of civil society has become very popular in the last decades. The end of communistic governments in the communist countries of the Eastern part of Europe has increased the interest and research on if and how much civil society contributed to these events. Under the light of the constant conflict of “civil society vs. the state” a legitimate question might be to which extent civil societies have any right to exist in liberal, so-called western democracies that have allready fullfilled most of the civil society’s demands and is based largely on “the will of the people.”[8] Serbian Civil society faced in many aspects a historical development sui generis. Being under Austrian and Ottoman rule for a long time, Serbia and its people, as a (and maybe the most dominant) nation in the Kindom of Yugoslavia in the interwar period were largely occupied with the formation of the state and its complex ethnic composition.

Book Synopsis Models of European Civil Society by : Adam Jarosz
Download or read book Models of European Civil Society written by Adam Jarosz and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following volume is devoted to the issues of European models of civil societies. The aim of the authors is not to exhaust the whole topic but to bring forward some studies related to the civil society, both in the historical but also present perspective. Civil society is an important factor in a well-functioning state and crucial for developing a real, active and conscious community, which is able to control the state and its’ servants. Even more importantly, when the state fails to react to negative developments or leaders misuse their power to enforce it in fulfilling its duties, and in the most radical, or dramatic cases to replace it or change the governors. Democratic order gives the society enough tools to do this and the internet, social media and other new means of communication improve the level of self-organisation and shorten the time for potential reactions.

Book Synopsis Civil Society in Southeast Europe by : Dane R. Gordon
Download or read book Civil Society in Southeast Europe written by Dane R. Gordon and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2004 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the fall of communism in 1989 Southeast Europe has been a site of far-reaching societal transformation, much of it marked by political crisis, economic upheaval, ethnic tension, and bitter war. The book comprises articles investigating the history and development of civil society in post-communist Southeast Europe. How is civil society to be grasped, what are the historical factors shaping the civil societies of the region?, what is the function of civil society in the transition to democracy and a market-economy?, and what are the prospects for the future development of the civil societies of the region in an age of globalization?, -these are just a few of the major questions addressed in this collection of articles. Many of the authors are social scientists, philosophers, and activists from the region, offering first-hand critical analysis of the state of civil society in Southeast Europe and suggesting theoretical and practical strategies for the future course of its development. The aim is to provide the reader with insight into the complex challenges that face the civil societies of the region.
