Book excerpt: Civics for Christian Homeschoolers - Volume 2: Citizen of Heaven, Subject on Earth is the second part of a one-semester, sixteen-week Civics course. This book should be used together with Civics for Christian Homeschoolers, Volume 1: The Law. Both volumes work together to stimulate high schoolers into tackling the study of civics in a way that, first, recognizes that the best kind of government provides justice and stays within its proper, moral purpose-to protect the people's life, liberty, and property. But more importantly, Civics for Christian Homeschoolers seeks to help young Christians to think and live like Christians under the government that God has placed them under (or at least allowed them to be under). Included free with these two volumes are... - an answer key to the "Let's Review" and "For Additional Thought" questions at the end of each reading, and - five student quizzes (four regular quizzes and one cumulative final), with answer keys so parents can score them. The reading setup of Civics for Christian Homeschoolers is a four-days-per-week schedule for students in my high school Civics class. Students who aren't in my Civics class can use a modified version of this schedule. For example, parents, you can assign your student to complete that week's four-day reading schedule, then you can use Day 5 to review the answers to those four days of material. (We take quizzes in class, so if your student isn't in my Civics class, just use Day 5 as a quiz day for those weeks that include a quiz.)

Book excerpt: "The Law" is the classic, concise, and spirited defense of limited and proper government. In "The Law," author Frederic Bastiat (1801-1850) takes on those ever-present elitists, bureaucrats, and other enemies of liberty, and he utterly demolishes their supposed "right" to plunder the people's property and organize their lives. Absorbing the easy-to-grasp principles in this little book will empower the reader to convincingly explain to others what the proper role of government should be. Many of the ideas explained by Bastiat in "The Law" are ones that supporters of limited government intuitively know, but might not have been able to put into words. Students who are studying Civics or Government will enjoy using this version of "The Law," which has been newly paraphrased into modern English. This small volume will empower readers with a clear understanding of our God-given individuality, liberty, and property, and the right we have to use and develop these to the best of our ability.

Book excerpt: Homeschooling is a large and growing phenomenon in American society--between 1999 and 2003 it grew at ten times the rate of public school enrollments. Current estimates suggest that about two million kids are homeschooled, but information about them is incomplete. Here, educator Robert Kunzman uses his unprecedented access to six conservative Christian homeschooling families to explore this elusive world, from the day-to-day lives of its adherents to its broader aspirations to transform American culture and politics. He shows us what their homeschooling experience looks like firsthand, what their political and religious beliefs are, and what their kids learn about democratic citizenship and engaging with people with different beliefs. Woven throughout Kunzman's narrative are larger questions about the purpose of public education, what makes an educated citizenry--and how American political and intellectual life could change as conservative Christian homeschooled children reach adulthood.--From publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book turns to political theory as a framework for understanding the rise of political and religious extremism, and in particular the Christian Nationalist position, identifying solutions to civic challenges, and arguing for the vital role that public schools play in providing the civic education that prepares young people for participation in democratic self-government. Drawing on scholarly debates between liberal and republican political theorists, the author maintains that if we want to preserve our republic, then policymakers and educators must unapologetically promote a normative “vision of good citizenship” that cultivates in students the requisite civic virtue and rational autonomy needed to defend democracy from the rise of illiberal extremism. A timely contribution to academic debates about the role of civic education in the preservation of democracy, it will appeal to scholars, educators and policymakers concerned with the future of civic education, as well as the philosophy of education, political science, and educational policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the topic of homeschooling comes up, there often seem to be various assumptions as to why we homeschool our children, which are simply wrong, or, at the most, inadequate. Yes, the government schools have bullies; yes, the government schools might be bigger targets for armed shootings; and yes, the government schools (even the ones in good school districts) have kids or teachers who will teach our children language or experiences that we would rather them not learn that early in life (or at all). And while all those things are true and good reasons to educate our children at home, even if those problems were corrected, we—and many other parents—would still be committed to homeschooling our children. Why? The purpose of this book is to answer that question—and to answer it from the Scriptures.

About Scott Clifton - Scott Clifton is a fervent homeschooling advocate and dad from North Carolina. Just SECONDS after his first child was born, as he took his little baby boy and held him close to his chest, he looked down and immediately knew--right then in his heart--that he would never be able to wear that particular shirt again. (Also, that he and his wife Julie would homeschool their children, which they have done since 1994.) In 2002, the Lord led Scott into the field of home school education, and that year he began teaching once-a-week high school classes full time as the owner and operator of Home School Partners.
