Book excerpt: An extraordinary story of a girl, her grandfather and one of nature’s most mysterious and beguiling creatures: the honeybee. Meredith May recalls the first time a honeybee crawled on her arm. She was five years old, her parents had recently split and suddenly she found herself in the care of her grandfather, an eccentric beekeeper who made honey in a rusty old military bus in the yard. That first close encounter was at once terrifying and exhilarating for May, and in that moment she discovered that everything she needed to know about life and family was right before her eyes, in the secret world of bees. May turned to her grandfather and the art of beekeeping as an escape from her troubled reality. Her mother had receded into a volatile cycle of neurosis and despair and spent most days locked away in the bedroom. It was during this pivotal time in May’s childhood that she learned to take care of herself, forged an unbreakable bond with her grandfather and opened her eyes to the magic and wisdom of nature. The bees became a guiding force in May’s life, teaching her about family and community, loyalty and survival and the unequivocal relationship between a mother and her child. Part memoir, part beekeeping odyssey, The Honey Bus is an unforgettable story about finding home in the most unusual of places, and how a tiny, little-understood insect could save a life.

Book excerpt: Named one of the best books of historical fiction by the New York Times Acclaimed Irish novelist Nuala O’Connor’s bold reimagining of the life of James Joyce’s wife, muse, and the model for Molly Bloom in Ulysses is a “lively and loving paean to the indomitable Nora Barnacle” (Edna O’Brien). Dublin, 1904. Nora Joseph Barnacle is a twenty-year-old from Galway working as a maid at Finn’s Hotel. She enjoys the liveliness of her adopted city and on June 16—Bloomsday—her life is changed when she meets Dubliner James Joyce, a fateful encounter that turns into a lifelong love. Despite his hesitation to marry, Nora follows Joyce in pursuit of a life beyond Ireland, and they surround themselves with a buoyant group of friends that grows to include Samuel Beckett, Peggy Guggenheim, and Sylvia Beach. But as their life unfolds, Nora finds herself in conflict between their intense desire for each other and the constant anxiety of living in poverty throughout Europe. She desperately wants literary success for Jim, believing in his singular gift and knowing that he thrives on being the toast of the town, and it eventually provides her with a security long lacking in her life and his work. So even when Jim writes, drinks, and gambles his way to literary acclaim, Nora provides unflinching support and inspiration, but at a cost to her own happiness and that of their children. With gorgeous and emotionally resonant prose, Nora is a heartfelt portrayal of love, ambition, and the quiet power of an ordinary woman who was, in fact, extraordinary.

Book excerpt: On a strange, windy, and seemingly endless Wednesday night, clouds suddenly appear directly above me; and directly in front me, there is a gorgeous blood-orange tree, its arboreal branches spreading beautifully in every direction. The wind blows cold, bone-chillingly cold. A strong gust of wind pushes past me, strumming through my hair. The blistering wind is razor-blade-sharp, so sharp it felt as if I were being sliced across the face with a knife.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the citizens' continuous participation in a wide range of urban affairs, especially outside institutional frameworks. It brings together an interdisciplinary team of French, British and American academics who examine the long and rich history of participation or partnership in British and American urban life (with additional reference to France), showing that both private interests and community groups have long been involved in local policies. Utilizing the concept of governance as the main theoretical framework, the book explores how Western governments and local authorities have negotiated the difficult task of defining the borders between the territories of private and public actors and also in defining the boundaries of state intervention and public interest. Focusing on the blurring of these boundaries, this book presents a re-examination of how cities were developed, both past and present.

Book excerpt: The tale of a man and the memory that haunts him, River City One is the poetic and compassionate story of John Walker, a lawyer and ex-Marine adrift in a nameless city. Home from the war, he has become a man on the edge, quietly raging against the people he must now work for and live among—the kind of people incapable of understanding the terror he felt in combat and the guilt he carries in his heart. When he meets Ruth, a beautiful, famous singer traveling through the city, John discovers a new passion for living. But as the lies pile up, he takes more and more foolish risks to hold onto his family and the newfound love that threatens them both. Moving and lyrical, River City One is the story of a man discovering that the hardest part of going to war is coming home to face yourself.

Public, academic, and political discourses do not seem to be possible without circling around the topos of identity, thereby creating an illusion of uniqueness, separation, difference, and conflict. By studying the relationship between the Moroccan city of Tangiers and the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, Dieter Haller shows how cross-boundary experiences, practices, and identifications create a sense of neighborhood beyond official discourses. Across the Straits of Gibraltar, local and regional relationships in different fields such as kinship, economy, and culture provide resources for post-Brexit common action and a future beyond the prison of identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's 1984. Minor League Baseball mogul Larry Schmittou needs a new home for his Southern League Nashville Sounds franchise. Walt Jocketty, an Oakland A's executive, searches for a new town for his Double-A club. Fate brings them together in Huntsville, Alabama, a city in need of an outlet to unite its residents. Thus the Huntsville Stars are born. One Season in Rocket City brings to life the baseball renaissance that shook up Huntsville, a city many doubted would support professional baseball. Named after Huntsville's celebrated space industry, the Stars electrified the town with baseball fever to become one of the biggest attractions in Minor League Baseball that first season. Composed of Oakland's top prospects, who later fueled the A's championship run in the late 1980s, the Stars were the hottest ticket in town. Visiting teams called Huntsville the "Minor League show," and the Stars were the toast of the Southern League. Wearing patriotic red, white, and blue team colors, the team won the Southern League championship in their first year, led by future Major Leaguers Darrel Akerfelds, Tim Belcher, Greg Cadaret, José Canseco, Brian Dorsett, Stan Javier, Eric Plunk, Luis Polonia, and Terry Steinbach. But besides the lineup of touted prospects on the club, it was the gutsy role players who never reached the Major Leagues that willed them to a championship. Through interviews with former players, managers, executives, coaches, and beat writers who witnessed the Stars take the Southern League by storm, Dale Tafoya depicts the city's romance with the club, success on the field, and push for a championship. Beginning with a glimpse into Huntsville's rich history, One Season in Rocket City takes readers on a journey through the team's dramatic founding, Huntsville politics, tape-measure home runs, and the club's resilience to win the championship despite losing top players to promotions in midseason. The Stars were just what Huntsville needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Holbrook, one of the heroes of this book, once told me that he had mused his way to the conclusion that a school is to a community what the skin is to a body. “You see the rash on your arms and you might think that it’s the skin that’s sick, when actually the disease is somewhere deep inside, and it is only reflected in the skin. Or, conversely, when the skin is silky smooth - soft, and supple, and pleasant to the touch - it’s because the entire inside of the body is healthy.” It has just occurred to me that I have written a book to illustrate what John said. I must confess that at times, in order to better move the story along, two or three real-life persons have been shoved into one, or one person has been split up into two. Chronology has not been always rigorously followed, either, and real lives have been twisted to allow the sap of fiction to better flow to the heart and mind of the reader. Wait. Did I say fiction? I’ll take that back. For this is not a fictional book. The stories, all of them, without any exception, the stories, they are true. And if they sometimes seem far-fetched it’s only because many times reality is stranger than fiction - and also more pitiless, and more brutal. I have kept some of the original quizzes, essays, newspaper articles and classroom drawings to give the book its well-deserved air of authenticity. If you are a teacher, you will read the book and nod in agreement. If you are a parent, now you know – a teacher’s life is not the bowl of cherries you always thought it was. If you are a principal, or a superintendent, you will naturally want to burn the book in the public square - this book is a mirror and you will not like what you see. Some of the real names of the characters have been maintained: Marina Argueta, Elizabeth Ramirez, Franklin Sosa, Jose Alberto Ochoa and the rest of the Ochoa clan, Hector Mandujano, aka Camarón, and most of the soccer players on the KCHS varsity team have given me kind permission to use their real-life names. Only one character in the entire book is completely fabricated, and I will allow you, the reader, the investigative pleasure of discovering who that character is on your own. If you like the book, please recommend it to your friends, to that nasty brother-in-law of yours who gets drunk on Thanksgiving, to the guy sitting next to you in the carpool, or to your fellow teacher in the teacher’s lounge. But don’t lend it to him. Let him buy his own copy. You see, I live off the books I sell. Author :Saileanu, Cristian
