Book excerpt: This study focuses on the conflicting aims and deeds of the Russian government and the Polish nationally-minded student youth in the situation which emerged after the closure of the universities in Warsaw and Wilno (Vilnius) in 1832. Thousands of Polish students studied in Russian universities, constituting a considerable portion of the student body. They formed conspiracies, student unions and study circles. Their relations with Russian students entailed both enmity and co-operation. The book analyzes the idea of what it meant to be a Polish student in Russia between 1832 and 1863, and reveals secret disagreements between government politicians concerning the Polish question at the universities.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity of Angola by : Brian J. Huntley
Download or read book Biodiversity of Angola written by Brian J. Huntley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access multi-authored book presents a 'state of the science' synthesis of knowledge on the biodiversity of Angola, based on sources in peer-reviewed journals, in books and where appropriate, unpublished official reports. The book identifies Angola as one of the most biologically diverse countries in Africa, but notes that its fauna, flora, habitats and the processes that drive the dynamics of its ecosystems are still very poorly researched and documented. This 'state of the science' synthesis is for the use of all students of Angola's biodiversity, and for those responsible for the planning, development and sustainable management of the country's living resources. The volume brings together the results of expeditions and research undertaken in Angola since the late eighteenth century, with emphasis on work conducted in the four decades since Angola's independence in 1975. The individual chapters have been written by leaders in their fields, and reviewed by peers familiar with the region.

Download or read book The Ploger Method written by Marianne Ploger and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over forty years, Marianne Ploger has been teaching music lovers of all ages, interests, and aptitudes to discover their own musical gifts. She has found that it is not the ear that requires training-it is the mind. When the conscious mind knows what it is supposed to do, it effortlessly syncs with natural aural perceptions. In this book, Marianne shares the secrets that have helped hundreds develop more fluency and musicality in hearing, performing, reading, and writing music. Essentially, music is made up of few basic elements: 12 pitches, 11 di-chords, and rhythms grouped into two and/or three beats. Concrete descriptions of what to listen for in each of these elements, discovered by Ploger, will help you to develop the mental and aural skills needed for fluency and musicality. Techniques are provided to help you avoid common psychological pitfalls in the learning process. Find out how easy it is to read in any of the seven clefs, while developing skill in the French fixed syllable system employed at major conservatories throughout the world. After establishing familiarity with the basic elements, learn how to use your newfound knowledge and skill to identify more sophisticated forms, such as chords, modes, scales, polyrhythms and mixed meters.
Book Synopsis Beyond the Beat by : Daniel B. Cornfield
Download or read book Beyond the Beat written by Daniel B. Cornfield and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the bulwarks of the music industry are collapsing, what does it mean to be a successful musician and artist? How might contemporary musicians sustain their artistic communities? Based on interviews with over seventy-five popular-music professionals in Nashville, Beyond the Beat looks at artist activists—those visionaries who create inclusive artist communities in today's individualistic and entrepreneurial art world. Using Nashville as a model, Daniel Cornfield develops a theory of artist activism—the ways that artist peers strengthen and build diverse artist communities. Cornfield discusses how genre-diversifying artist activists have arisen throughout the late twentieth-century musician migration to Nashville, a city that boasts the highest concentration of music jobs in the United States. Music City is now home to diverse recording artists—including Jack White, El Movimiento, the Black Keys, and Paramore. Cornfield identifies three types of artist activists: the artist-producer who produces and distributes his or her own and others' work while mentoring early-career artists, the social entrepreneur who maintains social spaces for artist networking, and arts trade union reformers who are revamping collective bargaining and union functions. Throughout, Cornfield examines enterprising musicians both known and less recognized. He links individual and collective actions taken by artist activists to their orientations toward success, audience, and risk and to their original inspirations for embarking on music careers. Beyond the Beat offers a new model of artistic success based on innovating creative institutions to benefit the society at large.
