Book excerpt: The stunning final novel from East Germany's most acclaimed writer Three years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the writer Christa Wolf was granted access to her newly declassified Stasi files. Known for her defiance and outspokenness, Wolf was not especially surprised to discover forty-two volumes of documents produced by the East German secret police. But what was surprising was a thin green folder whose contents told an unfamiliar—and disturbing—story: in the early 1960s, Wolf herself had been an informant for the Communist government. And yet, thirty years on, she had absolutely no recollection of it. Wolf's extraordinary autobiographical final novel is an account of what it was like to reckon with such a shocking discovery. Based on the year she spent in Los Angeles after these explosive revelations, City of Angels is at once a powerful examination of memory and a surprisingly funny and touching exploration of L.A., a city strikingly different from any Wolf had ever visited. Even as she reflects on the burdens of twentieth-century history, Wolf describes the pleasures of driving a Geo Metro down Wilshire Boulevard and watching episodes of Star Trek late at night. Rich with philosophical insights, personal revelations, and vivid descriptions of a diverse city and its citizens, City of Angels is a profoundly humane and disarmingly honest novel—and a powerful conclusion to a remarkable career in letters.

Book excerpt: Nikki Black, 17, a self-imposed lone wolf since her mother died, fled suburban Chicago to escape her painful past. But when her so-called boyfriend reveals why he really lured her to Southern California — to star in child porn flicks — she ends up on the streets of L.A. with only the clothes on her back and a twelve-year-old addict named Rain trailing in her shadows. The girls seek refuge at a residential hotel above a punk rock bar in downtown L.A. a few months before the city erupts into chaos during the 1992 riots. At The American Hotel, Nikki makes friends and for the first time in years feels as if she has a real family again. All that changes when Rain disappears. Everyone except Nikki, including the police, thinks Rain succumbed to the seductive allure of addiction and life on the streets. Nikki finds herself fighting for her own life the closer she gets to unveiling a sinister cover-up by a powerful group that secretly controls the city of angels. City of Angels is an edgy, gritty, mature Young Adult mystery about a teenager’s struggle to not only belong — but survive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, Los Angeles has become the most racially and economically divided city in the United States. In the poorest parts of South Central Los Angeles, buildings in disrepair--the legacy of racial unrest. Moving beyond stereotypes of South Central's predominantly African American residents, João H. Costa Vargas recounts his almost two years living in the district. Personal, critical, and disquieting, Catching Hell in the City of Angels examines the ways in which economic and social changes in the twentieth century have affected the black community, and powerfully conveys the experiences that bind and divide its people. Through compelling stories of South Central, including his own experience as an immigrant of color, Vargas presents portraits of four groups. He talks daily with women living in a low-income Watts apartment building; works with activists in a community organization against police brutality; interacts with former gang members trying to maintain a 1992 truce between the Bloods and the Crips; and listens to amateur jazz musicians who perform in a gentrified section of the neighborhood. In each case he describes the worldviews and the definitions of "blackness" these people use to cope with oppression. Vargas finds, in turn, that blackness is a form of racial solidarity, a vehicle for the renewal of African American culture, and a political expression of revolutionary black nationalism. Vargas reveals that the social fault lines in South Central reflect both contemporary disparities and long-term struggles. In doing so, he shows both the racialized power that makes "blackness" a prized term of identity and the terrible price that African Americans have paid for this emphasis. Ultimately, Catching Hell in the City of Angels tells the story of urban America through the lives of individuals from diverse, overlapping, and vibrant communities. João H. Costa Vargas is assistant professor in the Center for African and African American Studies and the department of anthropology at the University of Texas, Austin. Robin D. G. Kelley is the William B. Ransford Professor of Cultural and Historical Studies at Columbia University. He is the author of numerous books, including Yo Mama's Disfunktional: Fighting the Culture Wars in Urban America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bes and Syrk are boarding the Wizz airplane and hey presto they are coming to London. The feather floating over passengers compartment takes away all fears of height and flight. It is a symbol of angelic presence, thus the feeling of safety and good mood prevails; the journey over many countries is much too short for many passengers, especially for Bes. The moment boys arrive to London Victoria they both make the same precious discovery that here must be the secret operation area for Santa. Indeed, whenever you come to London, please pay attention. You can watch this scenery from top deck of a bus arriving to Victoria Station. The girl on top of the monument will be in front her hands pointing precisely towards building with sloping roof and the building covered by the cap with a pick instead of a roof. It is so obvious that that girl is sending secret messages for someone who asks for messages from above. It can only be Santa; he needs a storage, smooth landing area, and distribution network for parcels. Thus, all this Christmas mystery is unrevealed now thanks to Bes and Syrk. All the fuss with delivery of gifts went unnoticed for centuries because of such perfect disguise of location the girl is the key point of this innocent collaboration London Victoria is the bridge between North Pole and Europe, and possibly the whole world. At Grannys home, Bes and Syrk try to outperform each other in the most creative way. During eating ice cream, Syrk - the victory personality manage to beat his cute younger brother with the help of angels; however at the end there was a little twist to the story. Difficult to judge even for Granny; did they both win or they lost, both? It is, however, worth to point out, that boys try to be also very useful. They were slightly to eager with cleaning the dishes, and . . . but it was that fear of not dropping anything, which caused the disaster. In addition, Syrk admits that he developed a great phobia of huge London Eye. However, what is the family for? Of course, the family can focus only on one thing how to care for each other. Granny and Bes have a lot of fun; they plan how to heal that ridiculous fear. Next day they will travel towards the area to give Syrk a gentle support there. Bes with Granny plan to pull Syrk on his roller-skates together; from Parliament, over Westminter Bridge towards London Eye. Syrk can try to resist the movement ahead towards his dread, and give last chance of existence to irrational fear. That evening Granny surprised both brothers by giving them all her weekly budget for financial training; under her scrutiny they should learn how to make the most of their assets; to learn how to choose value for money. If one tries to focus positively on economic issues in early age, this should push everybody to abundance; Granny calculates. In a very happy mood, everybody went to bed. Yet that surprised even Syrk. During that little disaster with porcelain, Granny uttered an awkward word about him - clumsy boy- and that started to hurt . . . enormously. Syrk remembered their commitment, the aim to live in the state of joy and happiness and managed to remove obtrusive unwanted thoughts from his mind. As a reward, he had a very nice dream, in which he experienced again his every success, or may be even more First thing in the morning, Syrk discovered the route for airplanes. Granny was very puzzled; she lived in this flat for years but never noticed anything unusual. She contemplates on that route, broadens the idea on life path in general . . .

Book excerpt: The City of God is a book of Christian philosophy written in Latin by Augustine of Hippo in the early 5th century AD. The book was in response to allegations that Christianity brought about the decline of Rome and is considered one of Augustine's most important works. Augustine wrote The City of God as an argument for the truth of Christianity over competing religions and philosophies. He argues that Christianity was not responsible for the Sack of Rome, but instead responsible for its success. Even if the earthly rule of the Empire was imperiled, it was the City of God that would ultimately triumph. As a work of one of the most influential Church Fathers, The City of God is a cornerstone of Western thought, expounding on many profound questions of theology, such as the suffering of the righteous, the existence of evil, the conflict between free will and divine omniscience, and the doctrine of original sin.
