Book Synopsis Urban Flooding of Greater Dhaka in a Changing Climate by : Susmita Dasgupta
Download or read book Urban Flooding of Greater Dhaka in a Changing Climate written by Susmita Dasgupta and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and one of the world’s rapidly growing megacities, is an urban hotspot for climate risks. Located in central Bangladesh on the lower reaches of the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, the city faces the recurring phenomena of urban flooding and waterlogging following intense rainfall nearly every year. As a low-elevation city with a tropical monsoon climate, Dhaka has a long history of river flooding as a natural hazard. Recent major floods have been worse in terms of depth and extent of inundation and duration, especially in fringe areas, where many of the city’s poor reside. Rapid, unplanned urbanization and the gradual filling up of low-lying flood plains, rivers, canals, and other water bodies traditionally used to drain or retain water during rainfall have exacerbated the problem. A growing concern is that, in a changing climate, characterized by heavier and more erratic rainfall in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) Basin during the monsoon season, the situation may worsen.

Book Synopsis Geography Of Bangladesh by : Haroun Er Rashid
Download or read book Geography Of Bangladesh written by Haroun Er Rashid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its struggle for independence, Bangladesh became the focal point of world attention in the early 1970s. It emerged victorious, but its development was hindered by the after-effects of the war—the destruction of much of its infrastructure, problems of governmental change, and the enormous difficulties faced by government and aid officials in assembling a data base for long-range planning. Professor Rashid's book—the first major comprehensive geographic inventory of Bangladesh—provides the key elements for such a base. Emphasizing the rural and agricultural characteristics of the country, it also covers in depth its physiography, hydrography, climate, soils, land utilization, migration and settlement patterns, transportation infrastructure, and human and natural resources.
